I have just discovered that having a firearm equipped reduces your chances of spellcasting. Kinda sucks since I just paid 18 platinum coins to learn firearms... doh!
Is there a way to improve mining besides having more skill?
Here's a keyset for laptop users. Movement is now on the kjhlyubn keys; running no longer works (capital-kjhlyubn doesn't do it, so maybe shifted arrows were hard-coded in or something). Wait and get are period and comma respectively, just as in the rogue family. Targeting has moved from numpad-* to semicolon. Bash has moved from b to V (offer Violence to); dip/mix has moved from B to E (perform Esoteric alchemy).
I don't know whether the config parser is sensitive to hard tab characters; if it is, simply saving this file as config.txt won't work, because the HTML formatting smashes whitespace. But you can still look at the keyset section at the bottom and make the appropriate changes.

I really must be missing something. I'm a level 4 warmage, and I just keep getting killed over and over again in the first level of the puppy dungeon or the second level of the beginner dungeon.
Is the point of this game just to get owned over and over again, and never be able to keep any gold or items? How are you supposed to stay alive? I stand no chance against a lot of the monsters that randomly spawn. I'll just get killed in one or two hits from a kobolt, every time.

The best thing to do in the beginning is to do quests in towns.
There's a notice board in every town, there are various quests, the easiest to do are the delivery quests, which you simply have to take an item from one town to another.
Doing this quests will get you Gold, EXP, items, and Platinum Coins to level up skills. Do these for a while before venturing into dungeons.
Apparently someone got it running in Wine. Does Wine go on macs? I do not know anything about macs aside from the mice being one button. How many buttons are on the keyboard?
First I did a quest to kill some monsters in a forest... and actually succeeded! Except I can't find the person who gave me the quest, so no reward for me. Then I tried another one like that... and got one-shotted by a "fallen soldier". Next I tried one to escort a person to Palmia before he dies of poison, which I looked up and is right to the east of the beginner city. I go STRAIGHT there... and the guy dies of his poison ONE SQUARE outside of the city.
Take delivery quests and the quests to get another NPC's items. Just buy something cheap at a store ( I find alcohol works) and trade for said cheap item and volia, a little reward.
Hunting and those poisoned character quests are a lot harder.

Though the society seems to have no problem with you marrying a little girl that you own as a pet.
Considering the OTHER things you're able to marry and breed with, they're probably just glad she's bipedal, has a vagina, and didn't savor the taste of human flesh. And that neither of you charge for it.
Good info about being able to turn cursed items to meat to get rid of them, I've abandoned a few characters due to terminal teleportitis and the like. Dipping the silver arrow that got cursed in acid wasn't destroying it, but getting eaten by slimes apparently did (along with a bunch of other items). I've taken to sleeping naked in hopes that it avoids the dream that curses an piece of equipment.
As for my own hijinks, I took a quest where some guy wanted a corpse owned by another townsperson. I wasn't aware of trading for stuff at this point, so I just went out into the wilderness and killed stuff til I got a dog corpse. Had to grab that fast because my little girl will chomp down on any corpse left around for more than a few turns. It rotted by the time I got to town, but the npc still accepted it. It never occurred to me that he wanted to EAT the thing until he started chomping down before I could even loot my quest reward, at which point he died from food poisoning while cursing my name and I took a karma hit.
Addenum: So it looks like I wasn't hallucinating when I thought that a random assassination event killed the innkeeper in the first town in another game I abandoned. Apparently no one is immune from that, not even the king. NPCs respawn after a while, but that didn't do me much good when I needed shelter from an Etherwind and couldn't get it.
So, uh.. how do I sleep? I also don't know where the beds are. I've found that resting kind've works, but I haven't slept yet because I can't figure it out.

Go to the Inn in a town and find a bed (I think any bed in any house works) and hit Spacebar.

Ah, thanks. I just kept trying to rest and that made things worse.
Hmm, I told my dog to wait at town but now he is gone. Does he come back or did I do something bad?

You can get them by winning 4 times in a row at blackjack.
With high enough luck and dexterity it's easy. (Luck for getting the right cards. Dexterity for cheating when needed.)

Yeah I know, and did that through the tutorial, but having to hit fn + whatever to use +-*0 is a giant pain.

Well, my pet little girl is now dead, slain by a kobolt.

Bartenders can revive pets.
How do I trade with them? Everytime I try they just say "are you kidding?".
