my jobs have usually been 3 or 4 weeks before giving me my first paycheck, unless i've worked at the institution previously
    whaaaat

both my previous jobs waited two weeks, and then paid me weekly thenceforth

3-4 weeks would be ... weird

I'd need to rely on free food from the second week or so in

Most jobs I've had have paid every two weeks, roughly one week after the pay period ended. So if you began at the beginning of the pay period you would get your first paycheck three weeks later.

Oboro what kind of coffee shop is it? large chain or local place?

A local place is more likely to be able to pay you quickly I think. A large chain will probably have to churn it through the usual payment system and that may take longer.

You should be prepared for the fact that, depending on when you start and how the business is run, it can often take up to a month between actually working your first day and receiving your first paycheck.
That, uh, paycheck will at least account for all of those hours over that up-to-a-month, right?

Seriously, this is life or death.

Really depends on how they manage paychecks and will vary a lot from business to business. You should check with them on your first day. Really, the only real warning sign would be if the manager didn't know.

BTW: Look into getting some emergency food stamps. It's been a few years since I had dealing with DSHS and back then it was a horrible and labyrinthine process but it should be possible to get an EBT card (like a debit card but it only works for food and certain things) with a little money on it at least.

    DSHS:
    http://www1.dshs.wa.gov/
    Food Assistance:
    https://fortress.wa.gov/dshs/f2ws03esaapps/onlinecso/Food_Assistance_Program.asp

At least back then the trick was to show up at the DSHS office (I had to go to the one in Ballard, which is a good mile walk from the nearest bus stop) really damn early and wait in line outside for a long bloody time until they opened.

Then talk to someone who is openly hostile that I was there trying to get food stamps for my family despite my monthly White Privilege check and the free brandy and cigars from the Manocentric Manocracy Club. This person will then give you inaccurate information and make repeated requests for documents that do not exist. Seeing as the same person does not work there more than once, ever, each new Bureaucracy Drone will start anew on the misinformation / demands front.

Despite all that sometimes you can walk out of there with an EBT card with some money on it for food.
