And you're not exactly an average internet user to begin with, was more my point.
right, but my point is that it's not like there's a sign over someone that says "BEWARE: ADVANCED INTERNET USER", so unless you have a reason to stick with WEP, you should just take the two seconds it takes to switch to WPA. not because something bad is definitely going to happen, but because there's no good reason not to protect yourself.
I just went ahead and told my router to deny all wireless machines categorically unless they matched a specific list of MAC addresses. That should be sufficient, right?

so i turned my pc on today and the login screen appeared but it was in like 800x600 and it took a hella long time to load and then it told me there was an unauthorised change to my hardware and that i had to reactivate it by putting in my key again and i did that and hit next and now it's hanging
Okay well in the Device Manager it says that the config information for both of by DVD drives and my Soundcard in the registry is incomplete or damaged
That sort of thing is often associated with Harddrive damage. You should run a "chkdsk C: /R" at the command line (it won't run, but it will give you the option to run next time windows starts).
the thing with the windows ads is how is apple gonna make another one of their ads now
doesnt even matter if the windows ads are actually any good at selling anything
apples whole thing just got neutered pretty much

that's the whole point, and it's why it's a brilliant marketing move by microsoft
Most people don't need uncrackable wifi. Thye just need wifi that's harder to crack than the next guy.
It's like if you're camping and a bear shows up. You don't have to outrun the bear. You just have to outrun the slowest guy you're camping with.
To an extent, yeah. But to some people (not saying I know these people, but...) putting up WEP is like going into bear infested woods and coating yourself in honey and ham. Some sort of ham/honey vest, if you will.

they're striking back against those stupid Apple ads
Combatting the idea that PC users are all just nerds?
definitely
I think it's an interesting advertisement they got going.
However, I don't think it's gonna help Windows out so much.
I think it combined with Mojave will.
maybe not as much as the apple commercials, but it's certainly a good step.
so uhhh
halp
My old DVD drive was giving me hassle when I put discs in, churning a lot, flashing the light a lot, but without actually doing anything
So I bought a new one
And that one does exactly the same thing
Okay well safe mode seems to work, but it says that Help and Support was not able to start
I think maybe my HDD is dying?
that's not good
The startup screen loads at the right size, resolution now
But it still takes fucking ages
it should leave your stuff intact and fix the problems it has
should
Blah

the apple ads push the idea that macs are better than everyone else
the pc ads push the idea that pcs are everyone else
pc wins, because that's a bigger market and a better sell
having grown up using macs from inception, however, i have a lot of problems with how rife with technical errors PCs are
doesnt even matter if the windows ads are actually any good at selling anything

I grew up with macs as well
hell yeah
I get all nostalgic about OS9 'cus I remember it so fondly
My dad has had a macintosh computer longer then he's had me
shit be archaic
I found my old simcity and simearth disks the other day and went to put them on my laptop and it was all "LOL NOBODY CAN US OS9 PROGRAMS EVER AGAIN"
that was the greatest game on our mac when i was a kid
that's the whole point, and it's why it's a brilliant marketing move by microsoft
I like them
They're... quaint?
Not to sure about that but maybe that's just because I'm Apple biased.
they are great
uuuuuhhhhh
