I just find it funny he's calling Obama a fear monger when Rush is the one trying to instill fear and doubt. I'm pretty sure Obama hasn't left me feeling hopeless and scared. Politics as usual, I suppose.

Cognitive dissonance? In a Republican? Surely you jest!
I think we'd both be well served to eliminate the outliers and remind ourselves that the opposition are people. Not hypocrites or sinners or liars or crooks. People like Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter no more represent the right than Christopher Hitchens (author of "God is Not Great: How Religion Ruins Everything) or Michael Moore represent the left. These are people who have lost sight of the humanity of the other side. It's important to remember that most self-identifying Democrats and Republicans are just people who want the best for their country. We have strong disagreements on the best way to do that, and the stakes are sufficiently high that no one wants to give the other side a chance.
But talking about the bias of the media only causes us to tend towards ideology. Reactionary responses where we fall back to the party line only inflame arguments that have been going on since the country started. For every Chris Matthews, there's a Sean Hannity. For every Keith Olbermann there's a Bill O'Reilly. For every Rachel Maddow there's a Michelle Malkin. And while they might be fun to watch I think it's intellectually dishonest to believe that they are as neutral or fair or balanced as they claim.
I like to think I'm fairly magnanimous in most respects, but this is one area on which I will not bend or admit wrongness - the media is a circus, an entertainment industry that caters to their demographic. MSNBC or CNN are liberally biased - absolutely. But if you're going to claim that Fox News and Rush Limbaugh are not, I don't know that I'm willing to continue this particular discussion.
Having said that, I'd like to reiterate my first point - we're all just people, we all just want the best for our nation. When the Republicans were in power, there were people who wanted the nation to fail so that the Democrats could take over - these people are the liars and hypocrites. But now that the Democrats are in power, the people on the right who want them to fail so the nation will swing back to the right - and I will not hold them to a less stringent standard.
I thought this would be EXCEEDINGLY generous, since I in no way believe the caliber of the left's bias is equal to the right's. I conceded a lot of things I don't necessarily believe in with the expectation that I could at least convince him that Fox News is not actually Fair and Balanced. Low hanging fruit, right?
Well, when he can't win an argument with me he calls up my wife. He honestly cannot see the bias in his sources. I don't know why I communicate with him at all. I ought to set up an email filter to catch anything with "conservative" or "liberal" from him and file it away without reading it.
What annoys me the most is the Christian Right, they're about as bad the Socialists with the Democrats.
o_O I don't even know what this means. Is there some kind of hugely powerful socialist voting block out there that I'm not aware of?

The 'far left' (I can assume by this you mean 'anyone who is to the left of Margaret Thatcher') is not socialist. Some of them are, to be sure- but to call people who agree that a person should be able to start their own business, that almost every industry should be free of government control, etc, "socialists" is to stretch the definition of socialism until it is meaningless.
It'd be like calling Ron Paul a socialist because he doesn't believe in wholly privatized law enforcement or military defense. Believe it or not, there are models for how you could go about removing government involvement in those areas. But "not being ultracapitalistic" =/= "being socialist."

The alternative prom is traditionally not a LGBT thing, as the blogger seems to think - it's usually just a counter-cultural thing thrown by the kids who wouldn't be caught dead going to the Real Prom. Picture goth kids, art nerds, and theater people. Sure, the rate of homosexuality is probably higher, but that's not the focus.
That's not to say that Ann Coulter isn't a complete bitch, or that her comment was as witty as she seems to think everything she says is.
This is why the Right can get away with painting the Left as a bunch of oversensitive weenies; there's a small but vocal subset at the far left that fucking overreacts to anything even vaguely resembling possibly slightly offensive talk.
Except that Coulter's comments should always be interpreted in the most offensive and least intelligent means possible, because that is likely closest to her intention. Doesn't matter what an "alternative prom" actually is, she almost certainly was yukking it up at all the MSNBC fags. And yes, if called on it, she will probably go hit Wiki and discover she has an out by describing it as you just did. But we all know she's a xenophobic, gay-bashing cunt, so we know there was no innocence in her comment.

Ha, that reminds me - at the diner yesterday, I sat next to a couple of little old ladies bitching about Obama and socialism. Their complaint? He isn't the hardcore socialist they hoped he'd be.

Self-righteousness is incompatible with coalition building.
For some reason the current discussion made me think of Rush Limbaugh for no particular reason, and oh hey he's in the news again.
CNN - Limbaugh used his self-described "first national address," which ran more than hour longer than his allotted 20 minutes, to criticize President Barack Obama for inspiring fear in Americans in order to push a liberal agenda of "big government."
"He wants people in fear, angst and crisis, fearing the worst each and every day because that clears the decks for President Obama and his pals to come in with the answers which are abject failures, historically shown and demonstrated. Doesn't matter. They'll have control of it when it's all over. And that's what they want," Limbaugh said.
...
Limbaugh praised Obama as one of the most gifted politicians he has seen, but said, "It just breaks my heart that he does not use these extraordinary talents and gifts to motivate and inspire the American people to be the best they can be. He's doing just the opposite."
...
"Did the Democrats want the war in Iraq to fail? Well, they certainly did. And they not only wanted the war in Iraq to fail, they proclaimed it a failure."
I love this guy. If someone already brought it up, sorry. I'm just looking over news from CPAC and it's hilarity.
"I've listened carefully to the president's speech [to a joint session of Congress and the nation]. I think it is the boldest effort we've seen to create a European socialist model," the former House speaker said.
The Reds are tearing us apart from within!
The thing about this is that CNN carried the entire 80-90 minutes live with no commercial interruptions. Welcome to our liberal media in action. Jesus.

To be fair, Maddow is pretty unique in being likable. Matthews and Olbermann aren't a whole lot better than O'Reilly and Hannity.
...
Okay, nothing is as bad as Hannity, but Matthews still sucks ass.

Matthews also isn't really anything you could describe as liberal and an out and out advocate for Democrats like Olbermann and Maddow are. And Maddow in particular is way more adversarial with Democrats than anyone on the right ever is.

Matthews is obsessed by personality and worshiping leaders. He was exactly the same way with Bush during his first term. He doesn't give a shit about policy and thus isn't really an advocate for anything. Remember how he was considering a run for Specter's Senate seat? He decided not to run because he had no idea what he'd do with it, he just thought it would be cool to be a Senator.
Matthews is an asshat.

I guess I can see the point there. Its more the cult of personality, for or against, than the policies behind the person.
From what I've seen of Maddow, I can't really stand her. She's far too sarcastic/snarky/zany/goofy, which are all awful things. And Olbermann is a grandiloquent ass. I haven't seen much of Matthews but I haven't minded him.

And yeah, Shep Smith is the only person on Fox I can tolerate for more than 30 seconds. Sometimes I even like him!
But this would work better in a media thread which never survives very long.

Jon Stewart. Thankfully the Right has Colbert to balance him out.

See, the thing is, I don't mind political humour whatsoever, Jon Stewart's okay, Wonkette is great, but Maddow, not at all. I don't know if it's because the former are comedy, and she's a newscaster, or what, but she just comes across as, I dunno, bitter or hateful or something. There's no wit to it, no comedy, she's just rude. Or something like that.
