    Haps, why did so many people emigrate from Germany at the end of the 19th century? Wasn't Germany economically prosperous then?

    Huh, actually the first half of the 19th century saw the biggest emmigration waves (economic reasons, bad harvests, ...).
    It stopped with the Civil war.
    The one you're talking about... I don't know why it happened.

    Yeah, that's what I thought. I didn't know there was such a big wave, especially when Germany was becoming such a powerful state.

    Hmm, what could have possibly changed in the region now called Germany towards the end of the 19th century. Say, around 1871 or so ...
