Who gives a fuck about Captain America, let's talk about Penthouse Comix!

So it looks like Chris Evans may be playing Captain America, if that source is to be believed (If it isn't, boy is there egg on my face!)

here are some accurate portrayals of Captain America

cpt_america_smashes_nazis_2.jpg

liefeld-cap.jpg

captain-america-hulk-3.jpg

This is neat! Chris Evans is a pretty good actor and even though he made a perfect Human Torch, I think he could still make a pretty good Captain America. I mean, he played serious pretty well in Sunshine, as meh as that movie was

oh, and Iron Man is still neat! Here is a trailer with him opening a BRIEFCASE and doing BUSINESS THINGS no wait fuck that he shoots lasers and shit

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNQowwwwYa0

in also Iron Man news, there have been some pretty neat alternative covers for the Iron Man movie coming up, and boy are they swell

like what if Iron Man wanted to kill some fuckin' zombies or werewolves or someshit!

im5.jpg

here are more also as well

but nay, this news was not enough for Jordyn, Jordyn doesn't care about our fair star-spangled hero or the armored avenger

She wants you guys to know that there is a lady who fights crime

and just doesn't wear any pants

Meh is kind of strong, I guess. I did enjoy it, really, but it halfway through it went from something neat (wow I can't stop using that word) to some sort of weird hack-and-slash horror film and it didn't really fly with me

chris evans is pretty awesome and likeable, but down the road when they start working on the avengers movie, its hard to picture him holding his own against robert downey jr. and samuel l. jackson and being the leader and all. but still, encouraging news.

i'm more worried about the director, joe johnston. i mean, the rocketeer and hidalgo were awesome, but the rest of his stuff is kinda meh.

Under the heading of 'Was the idea really that popular?'...
This July, Archie Comics—home to world-famous characters Archie, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats and more—will release the first issues of two completely brand new titles: THE MARRIED LIFE: ARCHIE LOVES BETTY and THE MARRIED LIFE: ARCHIE LOVES VERONICA. Each title is an entirely new ongoing series with endless possibilities in its creative evolution, both in terms of its visual aesthetics and its more literary approach to storytelling.

Inspired by the overwhelming popularity and demand for the recent Archie wedding story, each title covers the detailed legacy of what might be in Archie’s most passionately debated futures, one married to the haughty debutante, Veronica Lodge, in “Archie Loves Veronica” and the other married to the compassionate girl-next-door, Betty Cooper, in “Archie Loves Betty.”

“Everything about THE MARRIED LIFE series for both titles has exceeded our exceptionally high expectations,” reflects Archie Comics Co-CEO, Jon Goldwater. “The new direction of Archie Comics will be defined with the introduction of these two new titles, ‘Archie Loves Betty’ and ‘Archie Loves Veronica,’ and we couldn’t be more thrilled.”

Amongst all the new projects being initiated at Archie Comics this year—including STAN LEE’S SUPER SEVEN, the popularity of Archie comics on iTunes and Archie’s Red Circle superheroes at DC, and new partnerships with Random House, IDW, and Dark Horse—the two new ongoing titles are a testament to Archie Comics’ ability to distinguish its relevance to our everyday lives time and time again.

I was hoping this would be about Penthouse Comix.

I bought the first Penthouse Comix back when it first came out in 1994. I was 16 and it was technically porn so you had to be 18 to legally purchase it. I got it from a mail order comic company and I just signed a bit that said "I am over 18". That was good enough for them.

I actually got three copies because back then I was an idiot who thought these mass-produced 1990s comics would some day be worth big money and I can retire off of them. Didn't happen. A lot of these comics are still going for cover price 15 years later. Shit didn't even keep up with inflation.

But yeah, Penthouse Comix. I remember there was an ad for some Penthouse PC game in there. I remember it because it was the only page with actual human boobs on it. There was a lot of drawn toplessness but...who cares? I'm not going to fantasize about banging a drawing.

So that ad got a lot of repeat viewings from me. It was the first porn I had. This was back when only wealthy nerds had the internet. And I don't know how prevelent internet porn even was in this days.

In subsequent months, I ordered Penthouse Comix two through six. I also bought the spin-off title Men's Adventure Comix (the comic-size version as opposed to the magazine-sized one). I started with the three copies of each for the first three issues but then I cut back to one issue each. Then I just stopped. I stopped collecting comics in general at around this time.

I just lost interest. In a sense, these pornographic comics were a bridge from an interest in comic books and superhero fantasy etc to being interested in human females. Not that I dated in high school.

I was also disappointed in these Penthouse Comix because there was never a human boob anywhere except for that ad in the first issue. And even the drawings were pretty tame. They rarely even showed vaginas. And no penetration at all. The stories were also pretty stupid. Pretty really stupid. And I know, it's porn but the editor's stated goal was to create stories that adults can enjoy. Not just porn but just adult superhero stories.

A few years later, I learned that this editor (George Caragonne) was accused of embezzling money and he fired all of the (actually rather distinguished) writers and artists that were with the comic at the begining. And he was becoming more difficult to work with and erratic behaviour, etc. And then yeah, he killed himself. Penthouse Comix and Men's Adventure Comix folded shortly thereafter.

It could have been great but...well, it wasn't. The stories were interesting at first then quickly got stupid. And there were very few human boobs. I don't know. 16 year old boys might have found the comic interesting, but that apparently was not a large enough market to sustain it. George Caragonne, whereever you are, I hope you found the peace you were looking for.

Tell me about it, dude. I had to whack it to Jim Gordon's penis in The Killing Joke from 1988 until Peter Parker showed his old man junk in Spider-Man: Reign in 2006

18 years of jerking off to the same old man penis. I know what it's like to be married.

We picked up a copy of the first issue of Penthouse Comix at ECCC because it has a story in it drawn by my favorite artist, Kevin Maguire.

    MaguireComics.jpg

He signed it for us too

    KMagsig.jpg

He also told us about the editor embezzling money and the guy next to him, I think it might've been James Robinson, explained that that was how he afforded all those distinguished writers and artists (he was paying almost double Marvel/DC rates for pages) and that he was also doing coke and then leapt 30 stories to his death after getting caught for the embezzling and such.

That's Men's Adventure Comix, not Penthouse Comix. Men's Adventure Comix came out like a year after Penthouse Comix. Seems you have the comic-sized version as well. Generally, PC and MAC were in magazine-size. Comic-size is rarer but neither is worth is much.

Anyway, nice picture and interesting story.
