LP: Beyond Earth! Update #4 New Carthage, Old Ruins

edited August 2015 in Social Entropy++
Beyond Earth is a spin off game of the famous Civilization series. In the future, the Earth is doomed. Rampart war, disease, pollution, and lack of resources have lead the leaders of 8 powerful factions to come to the same conclusion: Humanity must leave Earth to survive. Sadly however, not all can come along on the journey, and many will be left behind. Several promising planets have been selected, the ships built, the rockets fueled, the lucky few chosen.

The fate of humanity is in our hands. Humanity will conquer the unknown, or our story will end.

What is this:

This is a lets play of a Civ style game. However, instead of watching me play, the community will take the roles of the colonists and decide our future. You can be anything from a general and a mayor, to a lowly foot solider or storekeeper. Every one gets a vote and a voice, and although some players will be in more powerful positions I want every one to have a say.

All positions expect overall leader are open (that's my job!). If you can think of it, you can play it.

Some roles will control pieces of the game, while others will help flesh out our lore and write our story with their journals, blogs, and papers!

We're all in this together, let's not die!

Now, the first thing to do will be !signup in the role you want, and then !vote on who we are playing and what we are bringing with us on this incredible journey.

And now, to decide our nation....

The Sponsers:

These Eight leaders have all decided to leave the Earth and help forge the future of humanity. We must chose

People's African Union led by Samatar Jama Barre
-Bonus: +10% Food in growing cities when Healthy, All cities start with an Old Earth Relic
History
Avuncular, genial, affable, affecting an air of bonhomie, Samatar Jama Barre wished to be addressed as Kubwa Mjomba (“great uncle” in Swahili) by those he both commanded and protected. Despite his seeming benevolence and absent-minded demeanor, he was nonetheless an efficient and effective administrator, an able diplomat, and ruthless when necessary. Barre was amused and likely pleased when detractors likened him to the traditional African village chieftains of the past, claiming him to be a throwback and out-of-step with the new world in the wake of the Great Mistake. But the Peoples’ African Union made a wise choice when he was selected as one of their colony governors.

Early Life
Rising from the poverty and violence of the inundated streets of Hargeisa, Samatar joined the African Union’s resurgent military forces, eventually rising to the rank of Major. For three decades he served in a variety of increasingly important posts, military and civilian, rising steadily in both ability and influence. He was able to overcome lingering tribal tensions, dealing with the polyglot cultures of Africa with both reverence and common sense. Barre displayed those same diplomatic skills when negotiating with those outside the African Union, and brought to culmination several international agreements that helped propel the Union’s colonization effort before he was selected to command one of those colonies.

The Great Uncle
Barre proved to be just as efficient against any perceived threat to the well-being and safety of those under his protection. In dealing with nascent warlords, religious fanatics, and local dictators, he either brought about an equitable peace, or bludgeoned them into submission. Although never known as a military genius, his troops were extremely loyal to their “great uncle” and fought with abandon for his approval. Samatar Barre never lost a battle, although he took no credit for his victories and viewed them as lamentable necessities.

Verdict of History
Though not religious himself, he was tolerant and accepting of others' religious traditions. In the end, it was this tolerance, coupled with his intellect and personality that would shape the African Union’s colony on the new planet.

Colonists: who we bring with will determine what type of colony we will found. Engineers won.
+2 Production in every city

Spacecraft: what type of spaceship we take will give us strategic different options Tectonic Scanner was the winner.
-No technology is needed to see Petroleum, Geothermal and Titanium resources

Cargo: the science team says we have enough room to bring one important piece of cargo. Machinery was the winner.
Begin with a Worker unit

Planet Type: Random won. Look Terran though.

Terran World
A world with a few large landmasses separated by oceans and some smaller islands.

Terrain: Random won.

Note: Random is a acceptable choice for all. Size will be Standard (8 players, us and the other 7 Sponsors), with standard length and normal difficulty.

Also, if any one wants help choosing a role feel free to ask in the thread for help from me and your fellow colonists.

Now, with that said, Game on!

"I'm a noob and know nothing of this game? Can I play?"

Of course! I'll be walking us through step by step, and provide some input (if needed) on the pro's and con's of various choices. We're also playing on a low enough difficulty where while the Ai won't roll over for me, we can still have some fun and not religiously min-max. You can also just take on a lore job, providing write ups on your feelings on our actions and voting on big decisions.

And, personally, I'd have as much fun crashing and burning as winning, so don't fret. But that's not going to happen, cause we're awesome.

As we begin our journey, we see this:

    ?interpolation=lanczos-none&output-format=jpeg&output-quality=95&fit=inside|1024:640&composite-to=*,*|1024:640&background-color=black.jpg

The AI PLUTO had a difficult choice to make. Land the city on the northern hill, and grab the fruit to the north or along the river to the east, where there would be better mining opportunities.

The northern hill was chosen, and it pays off immediately.

    ?interpolation=lanczos-none&output-format=jpeg&output-quality=95&fit=inside|1024:640&composite-to=*,*|1024:640&background-color=black.jpg

    Jackpot

To the north of the fruit, edible fungus colonies and a titanium deposit are found (which we can see early with our tectonic scanner). While outside our current worker range, we will eventually be able to use both of these.

We're also next to fiber, which we set out to build a plantation for with our worker.

Up northeast, a strange swamp of an unknown substance is found. Perhaps a scientific investigation is in order?

For now, our choice of city production and tech is needed.

    City Production:

    Worker: 8 Turns (1 possession)
Explorer: 5 Turns (1 in possession)
    Solider: 7 Turns
    Clinic: 8 turns
    -Provides +1 science, +1 health

    Technology:

    Pioneering: 27 turns
    Planetary Survey: 27 Turns

    All below are 32 turns

    Physics
    Chemistry
    Genetics
    Engineering
    Ecology

    And for the effects:
Pioneering: Allows colonists (builds new cities) and trade depots (+1 production)
Planetary Survey: Work Barge (sea based worker) and can embark land units on sea transports (automatically done, we can move land units across water)
Physics-Ranger (ranged combat unit), Observatory (+2 beakers), launch complex (+3 orbital launch range)
Chemistry- Laboratory (+3 science), Recycler (+2 production), Petrol well tile improvement
Genetics- Pharamalab (+2 health), Cytonursery (+1 beaker, +1 health)
Engineering- Combat Rover (fast land unit), thorium reactor (+3 energy), repair facility (+10% production)
Ecology-Vivarium (+2 food, +1 food from deserts), ultrasonic fence (alien units cannot enter with in 2 tiles of a city with this building), can clear miasma clouds)

Civ: Beyond Earth explained Part 1.
Okay, so we have made land fall on our new world. We have one city and an explorer. Lets go over some of the basics so we know how to use both of these game pieces.

    Explorer

The explorer is the simpler of the 2, so lets start there. The explorer (like all units) as a movement, health, line of sight, and power status. Unique to the explore is expedition modules.

    Stats expliained:

Movement-each units has a certain number of movement points, determining how far it can move. Some tiles (hills, rivers) cost more to move over than others. Fortunately, explorers start with a skill that allows them to ignore such costs, so it can always move 2 tiles.

Health-Each unit has 100 hit points. When a unit engages in battle or is left in miasma(explained later) it takes damage. If the bar ever reaches zero, the unit is destroyed. Units that have taken damage are less effective in combat.

Line of sight(los)-determines how far a unit can see. Certain tiles block los, while others improve it. Some tiles, like hills, can do either based on your position relative to them.

Power-this stat determines how effective a unit will be in combat. The higher the power status, the better it fights.

We'll come back to combat later in this let's play. For now, I think that's enough on that.

Expedition modules-our new home contains many mysteries. Certain tiles can be explored by an explorer. While exploring, an explore cannot move from the tile. Each explore has a set number of modules. Once these are used up, an the unit must return to a friendly city to restock.

I hope that tells us how to use our basic units!

    Cities

Cities are how were work the tiles on a map and turn them into resources our empire can use. In order to understand cities, we must understand what tiles can provide us, and how these resources are used.

Energy-the currency of the game. Used for paying maintenance on buildings and units, greasing palms of rival sponsors, and rushing production.

Beakers-How we gain science. Each technology has a beaker cost. Each turn we produce x amount of beakers and have that supplied towards the cost of the tech. Once we reach x, we gain that technology. So, if we were gaining 7 beakers a turn and had a tech that costs 80 beakers, we would gain that technology in 12 turns (80/7, round up). Beakers work on a national level. Each city supplies the beakers it gains towards the technology we have chosen to research. We can only research 1 tech at a time.

Production-Used to build units and buildings in a city. Same formula as beakers, but works on a city rather than natural level.
Culture-A national level resource that allows us to purchase civics. Civics are modifiers that give us various bonuses (such a addition power fighting aliens). While each tech has its own cost, civics cost is determined per number of civics purchased. Example: our first civic may cost us 100 culture, the second 150, the third 200. This means that unlike techs, we cannot dip back down the tree for cheaper civics. The best civics are at the end of each of the four trees, so specializing is a good idea with these.

Food-Food is used to gain additional citizens. Each city starts with 1 citizen. Each citizen we have is another workable tile for that city. As we gather food, it is applied to the cost of the next one automatically. Once that point is reached, our city grows and can work more tiles. This is a city wide resource.

Health-National resource. As our cities grow and we build more, we will have to build buildings maintain our citizens health. Negative health gives us negative modifiers, positive health gives us buffs.

Okay, now for the city itself. As I mentioned, each city uses citizens to work the tiles around it. This available area is represents by the colored territory around the map. The tile the city is build on is always work. In order to get the most out of our cities, we must build buildings and tile improvements. Tiles improvements are built out side the city and improve the yield of that tile, buildings improve the yield of the tile the city is built on. Workers are need to build tile improvements.

Up for vote is the following:

    Production at Magan
    Technology choice
Rename capital? (Yay or nay, and suggest a name if yay)

Other players may offer up their over votes for the next update. The early game is the quietest part, things will ramp up once we get some units and more cities.

Props to Owenashi to having a heart and not wanting to leave the refugees on the doomed planet. Everybody really loved engineers thou.

    Our loadout:
People's African Union (winner of coin flip)
    Engineers
    Tectonic Sensor
    Machinery

Random/random was the Planet type. Look like Arid and some kind of continent, idk if it's a Pangaea or Terran type.

Fate of humanity is in our hands and these lunatics choose a unscounted world and leave our sponsor choice in the hands of lady luck.....

    I LOVE IT!

Everyone who needs a pm (I think its just our explorer for now) should of got one.

Vote closes at 8 pm CST tomorrow. At that point I will play until I feel there are enough matters to vote upon again.

Fellow unionists! We have struck forth into the unknown, bravely and boldly. We must prepare our minds and our bodies for further exploration, and to that end we must prepare our gear as well. I say that we begin researching Pioneering

We have no way of knowing what awaits us on this alien planet. What we can prepare for are our own shortcomings, and our human biology. Therefore, I recommend we begin production on a Clinic immediately. This is in no way is related to this strange rash I developed last night. I'm not panicking.

    No, you shut up.

That is all for now, fellow African Unionists. Remember: Let our powers combine!

Edit: An addition to Pluto's brief city write-up: The orange hex nut is the symbol for production, and the yellow circular symbol is energy. Everything else for the immediate future is fairly similar to prior Civ games, at least until we start running into miasma and needing to decide an affinity. But that last part won't be for a while yet.

Tomorrow was to be "how the hell do I read a map?" and "combat, or how not to die horribly"

But having fellow readers pitch in and explain things lightens my work load, and is appreciated.

Oh, and for those of you who know what little story and reveals there are for this game, let's keep a lid on those. please? I think for story purposes we only know what our tech can tell us, and I think it would be fun to see new players reactions to the places we can and will go.

I concur with my fellow leaders in saying that Pioneering is the best technology to research right now.

However, believe that instead of a Clinic, which provides only paltry benefits that we don't need, we should be building Soldiers. We don't know what's here with us on this planet, but we don't want to be caught with our pants down.

I am also officially starting a petition to rename our fair city either Harmless or, if there is enough room (I don't know how long a name can be), Mostly Harmless.

I will take this seriously and suggest either Abydos or New Carthage if we don't mind rewriting history. All great rulers have done so.

If we are to survive on this new planet, we need to be able to learn how to adapt to it.

Pioneering should help us record what we're getting right, and a Clinic should help us when we we get it wrong.
