You are kinda off base. Micromanagement is important, as you have Capital ships (Heroes) with abilities (Skills) that you need to use, along with certain ships also having abilities that need to be used after a few upgrades. In general it won't be as micro intensive as WC3, but if you don't micro you cap ship and the other guy does, you'll be taking it from behind.
OK, that makes sense. It's a bummer that there's no demo aside from the preorder beta, I'd like to give this a shot before I grab it. Some micro is good, no problem with that. I'm hoping this isn't a super fast click fest, though.
The creators have stressed that it isn't about micro pretty often. I mean, 90% of the stuff is autocast, and there are games that take months. I don't think in your two week long game you're going to really find out you lost because you couldn't dance your marines correctly.
I can just imagine some dude playing me on a large map, sending me a zipped file with a password and asking me not to delete it yet. Eventually, once I realize that we're coming to the end game, he'd e-mail me the password to the file. I'd open it and there'd be a text file detailing his plans on winning complete with contingencies and a write up of what I'm likely to do in certain situations. The last few hours of the game would be outlined too, but by then there'd be nothing I could do. I would then become his apprentice and would probably follow him into the abyss.
Wasn't I supposed to be able to download the beta with a pre-order from stardock? I got a receipt and an order number, but no instructions on how to download the thing.
Edit: Or maybe I'll just wait until Monday. No biggee.

Yea, I think the Beta might be over since it releases in two days. Personally doesn't bug me, since that's understandable.
Thanks I've become something of an interview whore at Joystiq (interviewing the GalCiv 2 team and Crystal Dynamics next).
What I liked most was how much of a response you got from simple questions. Lots of information too on the game. You should interview more people.
Just for you Yea I try to do about three interviews a month for Joystiq. Writing for Gamasutra gave me the interview bug, so it's sort of where my heart is.
I'm rather bitterly disappointed this game as no Euro release, never mind a UK release. No publisher and it could take at least a few months before one is found (if one is found)
System Requirements:
Minimum - Windows XP SP2/Vista, 1.8 GHz Single-Core Processor, 512 MB RAM (1 GB for Windows Vista), 128 MB DirectX 9 3D Video Card (Radeon 9600 / GeForce FX 6600 and above), DirectX 9.0c Compatible Sound Card, DVD-ROM Drive, 3 GB Hard Drive Space, Keyboard and Mouse, DirectX 9.0c
Recommended - 2.2 GHz Dual- or Quad-Core Processor, 1 GB RAM (2 GB for Windows Vista), 256 MB DirectX 9 3D Video Card (Radeon X1600 / GeForce 7600 and above)
My three year old machine pisses on the minumum specs and comes close enough to the recomended specs. So if you have a recent enough machine you should be fine. I have been silently hanging out for this game for a long time.
wonder how this would run on my 8600M GT. Either way I am excited for this game now. I've seen the ads for it and never even made the connection to the homeworld people. If not for this thread I think I may have missed this one entirely.
I have one day to complete a good portion of my Dark Avatar campaign .
I finally decided to get Dark Avatar (and preordered the next GalCiv2 expansion) instead of grabbing Sins. I figure for the moment CoH and DoW are sufficient for my real-time needs.
Having the different planet types (barren and so forth) REALLY slows down the early game. I don't feel the need to rush purchase several colony ships anymore, because even if I do find habitable planets I can't colonize them right away anyway. That'll take some adjustment.
Is it any good? Im worried something will go wrong in the download or when I switch machines I wont have it anymore.
If a digital download version of it is fine, I might very well do it.
Stardock is practically perfect. I've had no problems downloading from them, and it'll work regardless of the machine you're using. Just install SDCentral and log in with your password and user id. You're set.
The other thing to note is that Sins, like all stardock games I believe, has no copy protection at all.
This is not me saying in any way you should pirate you fucking bastards.
It means that for a lot of people, starforce and other such draconian protection is an important factor in a purchase choice, I know for one that some games have pissed me off so much cause of that.
Basically, its a very compatible game, that will run on a wide variety of machines.
It looks impressive because a lot of the visuals you see are things like skyboxes and very easy to render lighting effects. Like Homeworld 2 or Eve Online, space sims and spaceship games look graphically more intensive than they are.
So we'll be able to download this at 9:00 GMT, give or take an hour or two, according to Stardock. That's about 3:00 AM CST. I may have to stay up late to start the download from Stardock Central.

Seeing mushroom clouds pop up on the surface of planets is pretty cool but uh, glassing a planet might be counter productive. Super weapons smell just like SupCom. You'll have to spend a week teching up fighting a game across 50 planets before you get a chance to build one.

where does it say this? the general consensus over on their forums is that there is no official word, but they've hinted in forum posts that it won't be until sometime in the afternoon

I got that time from a forum post, but now it looks like there are all sorts of times people keep coming up with, with no sources at all. There is the timer on the website, but if that's correct and we can download it when it reaches zero, we'd be starting the download Tuesday and not Monday. It seems weird that they'd put the download up at 12:00 A.M. CST Tuesday. So I guess no one knows for sure.

Man but it is all worth it for the time you get to go
"MuHAHAHA but you did not expect to see the power of my... SECRET WEAPON!" and destroy their home planet!
pre-ordered friday night, but SD Central showed no indication of purchase (I do have an invoice, though). Hopefully I'll be able to pull the download in tomorrow night.

Well I am actually just predicting. But from that picture of a gun the size of a couple of capital ships I think I will probably be correct.

All i could think of was "My beautiful fps, gone!"
And i'm on a pretty fast computer.

Yeah, no demo means no buy for me.
Really? I run a beta version fine. Smooth as a porn stars ass.

According to the official forums, there'll be a demo inside a month.
Has anyone done this before from Stardock?

Does it have a mapmaker? Or well some kind of settings for maps/random maps?
Well you can set the number of planets/stars from just a few to like...100 planets over 4 systems? Or something to that effect.

Sweet.
What does a star do? can you build things around it? can you mine it?
how do you destroy planets?
Stars don't do anything, other than having planets orbit them.
And you can bombard planet surfaces, destroying all life on the planet. There are also super weapons, like this sonnuvabitch:
...maybe?
