I think it just has to do with so much money, millions of dollars at stake
With so much risk, the tendency is to cling to the basest prejudices to try to keep some level of safety
I just don't understand this thinking that is still firmly in place in mainstream American movies. If the lead isn't white, people won't go see the movie
This has been disproven over and over again yet the belief holds firm
The fucking President of our country isn't white anymore and movies still have to be white
i blame the jews.
and i just got a good chuckle thinking about a latino LotR.
George Lopez as Gimli, Mos Def as Pippin, and Denzel as Boromir would probably make sense.
Of course they wouldn't be stars, only tokens.

Isn't Will Smith the single highest grossing (or highest paid, I forget) actor in Hollywood at the moment?
The Village was such a kick in the balls. It was pretty creepy originally! Then it was 'GUESS WHAT THE REAL MONSTER WAS THE RETARDED KID. OH AND IT'S MODERN TIMES'.
The movie was awful but the music was great and Bryce Dallas Howard was hot.
Also, William Hurt is great in everything he's in. Particularly A History of Violence with the gayest goatee I've ever seen.

I'm pretty sure there was a book that came out several years before the movie which did a much better job of that whole modern times idea. Damned if I can remember what it was called though. (not the Giver)
I remember this book! It was the one where the entire village is like a zoo exhibit or something, and they're letting people get sick and die because that's how it was and then the girl has to leave to find medicine and she has to be sneaky about it
Yeah, that was it! Seems like it was one of the books to receive an award that year, and that's why I read it. The school library in junior high always had that group of award winners for checkout.

According to Forbes, last year he was
This year, third behind Harrison Ford and Adam Sandler
Meanwhile, you want to take a guess at the overall percentage of minority representation as compared to the general population?
Hint: Really bad

I think he deserved it
The movie was the third highest grossing of last year
And I don't think Robert Downy Jr. or Christian Bale could have asked for the kind of percentage he got from their respective movies
I'm going to write a fantasy screenplay but the twist will be that all the main characters are minorities. Someone will buy my screenplay and I will also win a Nobel Prize for, I don't know, something.
I mean they bought the rights to Eragon, I figure I just need to rip off another famous movie and change everything to fantasy and I'll be golden.
The Earthsea books kind of did that. Then Sci-Fi bought the movie rights and changed every character's race except the one they got Danny Glover to play.

I saw the trailer for this at the beginning of Transformers 2 today and it looked suitably epic. I don't know anything about the anime, but this has the potential to be at least mildly decent.

I think that was called Running Out of Time. I remember reading it in 5th grade.
EDIT: The wiki article is a mess but it confirms that this was the title of the book!
I remember that there was a rumor that one of the trees in their town was haunted when really it was a thing where tourists could climb into it from underground and watch the village through a knothole.

Never having seen Avatar this comic loses all of its punch.
I've never watched it either but was still able to appreciate the humor of this strip.
I had to scroll down to the post that mentioned this was about the Avatar movie that was being made to even understand what was going on. That is rather disappointing. Why can't he talk about beholders from the Dungeons and Dragons movie? Or the beautiful masterpiece that was its sequel? That's something everyone has seen and can connect with Gabe on.
Also if it wasn't mentioned in the text of the comic, I would have no idea that colored gentleman was Morgan Freeman.
I've never seen either of the Dungeon and Dragons movies.

What little I've seen of Avatar I've actually really liked, I'm just not about to get 3 or 4 volumes of DVDs to watch. I have enough cartoon DVDs for now.
It's pretty bullshit that they're whitening up Avatar but it's a symptom of a larger problem with there not being nearly-enough Asian child actors in this country.
edit: Or Eskimos for that matter.
The last Stephen Chow movie, CJ7, had the lead boy role played by a girl. Apparently, she was either the best actor who auditioned, or Stephen Chow wanted her in the movie no matter what.
