Seriously. "I am the reinforcements."
That one line motivated me enough to play through that whole section in the middle of the game where there is 17 hours without a cutscene.
Yeah, I also would suggest playing through it. Being able to look around while the insanity is unfolding around you is a nice touch...aw hell, the whole thing is awesome.
It's been a long, long time since I've said, "Oh CRAP" once during an intro sequence, let alone two or three times. It's fantastic.

Final Fantasy 4 and Final Fantasy 7 both raised the bar significantly for awesome videogame intros.
FF4's was the first game intro that was structured like a movie intro, and FF7's was the first that looked like a movie intro. They're both dated today, but at the time they were par none. FF7's was especially perfect because it starts you off kicking ass.
Well this thread just sold me a copy of the Darkness.
Oh my god.
Yeah. The intro is balls-to-the-wall awesome. In fact, the game itself is pretty fantastic and mostly manages to maintain the feel you get in the intro, though obviously ratcheted down a few notches.
Not to retread the Darkness thread, but there are full-fledged old-time movies on the in-game TVs, like Sinatra's Man With the Golden Arm. Hell, last night, I sat down and watched the full 2 hours of To Kill a Mockingbird in my in-game girlfriend's apartment. SO badass.

Doesn't stop them from being pretty awesome games, but I do agree...I guess that Masonite was only talking about Soul Reaver 1 and 2, and Defiance.
Blood Omen 2 isn't an awesome game by any stretch of the word.
Except if you're in awe of how much it sucks.
It still contained some of the elements that make the LoK series one of the best in gaming... such as great narration and interesting locales. Sure, it was more of a hack-and-slash, but... Kain deserved at least one game where he could unabashedly kill.
I had never heard of this game. Watching that intro, I was like, "Hey, this is pretty cool. Wait, what'd he just say? This is a racing game all of a sudden?" O_o
Ever since seeing the amazing cover art for that game I've always wanted to play it. Reading about it on wikipedia I just realised that the guy who did that game also made of Heart of Darkness, a game I bought when I was like nine or ten. I got stuck on like the first screen, but god I loved that game.
"I don't care if its God's own anti-son-of-a-bitch machine, the only we are going to give them is a fist full of lead and a pool of their own blood to drown in! Am I right marines?"

I've always been partial towards the voice work, but that may have more to do with the sheer amount of dialogue than anything else. The outtakes were a great addition to the bonus content on Defiance.
What, the Blood Omen 1 intro? That's just Vorador ruining the shit out of the Circle and Malek getting punished for failing at protecting them.
If you haven't played through the series, there's really not much point to explaining it in further detail, because the whole thing is a mega-convoluted time-traveling paradoxical thing that stretches out over 5 games. With vampires.

I think an appreciation thread is in order.
The voice acting was up to snuff in Blood Omen 2, yes. But it was pretty much the only thing that was, because the only "regular" LoK people who worked on BO2 were the people doing the voices of Kain, Vorador and Janos. Another team made that game, which explains why it's so different in tone from the rest of the series (and also how it could ship so close to Soul Reaver 2 in time).
Still, Defiance was pretty good. As far as intros go, Raziel escaping from the spirit world was thrilling. Soul Reaver has a better intro than the original LoK.

But then wait at the title screen a minute and you get this:

Which is a nice little piece that is kind of hard to follow until really late in the game (like most of the plot)
and this:

Which is also great.

It's even more awesome if you choose MGS2 when you start the game.
I second that! The Darkness had the best game opening sequence I've seen in such a long time..
I found a clip on YouTube, but it would be probably best if you played it for yourself..

How is it different besides getting a Raiden mask in your inventory?
Dark Colony
Trust me, it was awesome for it's time.
Hell yes, at the time this game came out that had to be one of the best CGI sequences yet.

Also, I third Katamari Damacy.
Final Fantasy VIII. Again and again and again and again.
Even if you hate the game (and yes, I know almost everyone else does) you cannot deny how awesome the FMV sequences were.
Oh my god.
And the music. God that game has awesome music.
The dialogue...the narration...best of any game I've ever seen.

No, I know that. What I'm saying is that the Blood Omen intros are terrible.

also Chronicles of riddick - butcher bay had a great intro, the long walk in to the prison was a nice touch.
THANK YOU! I was trying to remember which game this was. All i remember is the solider pistol whipping the alien and I remember saying, 'Hell ya!!'.
