Holy Shit. Amazing since Francis is usually a strong advocate for nonviolence. [citation needed*]
*Or at least that was my impression of him, I could be totally wrong.
The only thing that he's been very consistent on is his radical support for the poor. I highly doubt he's calling for military action so much as he's calling for the international community to protect civilians.
I found out some more context of this. The Pope did not actually call for violence or military strikes. It's just the media jumping for sensational headlines. Pope Francis actually said, "In these cases where there is unjust aggression, I can only say that it is licit to stop the unjust aggressor. I underscore the verb ’stop’; I don’t say bomb, make war — stop him. The means by which he may be stopped should be evaluated."
So no crusade. Sorry guys. Hope you didn't spend too much money on chainmail. ;-)

Yeah New Pope is no dummy and the other thing he puts a ton of effort into is avoiding the appearance of hypocrisy i.e. he's rejected many of the luxuries past popes enjoyed while championing for the poor. He's a true Franscican.
The same thing that has been happening since the dawn of mankind?

i have to say, i really like making "new pope" and "pope classic" jokes
A missing journalist just got executed in response to the air-strikes in Iraq, with another next on the chopping block unless they're stopped.
I really have to wonder if these guys actually think that a threat like that will have any impact at all.
I don't see the United States backing down from basically trying to save thousands of people from getting killed over one person being killed.
I've seen the argument made that they (ISIL) are in fact attempting to provoke more attacks and stir anti-Islamic sentiment in western countries. ISIL relies on recruits from all around the globe, so the more footage that gets out of Muslim civilians being bombed by western nations, the better the chance that Muslims will be moved to join the fight. In addition to this, beheading westerners generates outrage at home, which we then take out on ordinary Muslim people back at home, further widening the divide between Muslims and non-Muslims
Which really fucking sucks for the majority of Muslims world wide who are probably appalled than you or I. We can go, 'this is fucking terrible! These goddamn Muslim fundies!' Whereas a Muslim realises, 'shit, this is fucking terrible. I better not go out in public in case a white aussie wearing a flag for a cape sucker punches me on the way to the shop'

If we back down its sends the message that hostages work and more competnt organizations will make note of that.
I will note if Iraq hadnt basically left their US donated military equipment gift wrapped for these guys when they abandoned the region we wouldnt be there at all.

Don't they normally do that right from the start though? I mean they aren't shy about claiming responsibility for anything else they do. I wonder what took so long.
Russia on Friday escalated tensions with Ukraine to the highest level since its stealthy invasion of Crimea in the spring, sending more than 200 trucks from a long-stalled aid convoy into rebel-held eastern Ukraine over the objections of Kiev and, NATO said, conducting military operations on Ukrainian territory.
NATO officials said that the Russian military had moved artillery units inside Ukrainian territory in recent days and was using them to fire at Ukrainian forces. Russia has repeatedly denied sending troops or military hardware into Ukraine, just as it denied any link to the unidentified gunmen who paved the way for Moscow’s annexation of Crimea — until President Vladimir V. Putin stated in April that Russian troops were “of course” involved.
There has been a “major escalation in Russian military involvement in eastern Ukraine since mid-August, including the use of Russian forces,” Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen of NATO said in a statement. “Russian artillery support — both cross-border and from within Ukraine — is being employed against the Ukrainian armed forces,” Mr. Rasmussen added.
if the fact that rebel-controlled territory has steadily been shrinking despite Russian aid is taken at face value, yes, I assume they do.
I just assume they know that shooting at "not Russians" might turn them into Russians which Russia might take as a reason to go "protect" the Russians.
My friend is working on a roguelike game you can play if you want to. (It has free demo)
Moscow continues to deny direct intervention, although Russian news media has also started describing it as an invasion. Putin's denails are further contradicted by photographic evidence of Separatist forces using a T-72BM tank - a variant which has never been exported outside of Russia.

like it's just a populist maneuver on putin's part, it doesn't have anything to do with getting other countries to believe him
He heard complaints that Crimea now meant there were two bits of Russia not connected with the mainland and opted to solve that problem.
But yeah, right now he either doesn't understand or doesn't care how he appears outside Russia's sphere of influence.
His long time crackdown on that most pervasive enemy of the Motherland, the gays.
