Reagan lied, but his campaign was one of the big successes of the Southern Strategy. Which is all about couching your lies in euphemism and dogwhistles.

Hi, everyone. We've had a lot of fun in this thread, but I just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone about voting leave.

Depending on where you live in this great nation, your employer may be legally required to grant you paid leave if your scheduled hours on Election Day make it difficult or impossible for you to vote. You can check your state laws here.

Now, I know what you're thinking. "But Jedoc! I work a real job where my presence is actually required, and if I tell my employer that they're legally required to give me paid leave, they will probably threaten to put their boot all the way into my butthole!" Well, that's entirely possible, chum. That's why it's important to get your voting plan straightened out now. Perhaps you can offer to ensure coverage on Election Day in exchange for schedule flexibility on an early voting day, or find a colleague who mailed in their ballot to do you a solid and cover your shift while you exercise your franchise.

Whatever you do, make sure you and your employer have a solid plan to ensure that having a job doesn't prevent you from voting, and do it right away. It's good for your manager, it's good for you, and it's good for America.

But accusing her of misunderstanding qualitative easing? That's hypocritical and corrupt. Even though she readily admits she doesn't understand how qualitative easing works.

Romney lied all* the time too. He just looked presidential while doing it.
This is unprecedented. “We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers,” Romney’s pollster, Neil Newhouse, said.
This has produced what James Fallows calls the “post-truth” age — a relentlessly dishonest onslaught of brazen falsehoods with which the media and the political system are struggling to cope. What do you do when every article, every “fact-check,” every arbiter denounces a lie and corrects it, but then a politician just keeps repeating it?
    *not literally all, duh.

If you're a Republican, even if you hate Trump, it'd still be a "good" idea to vote for him if only for the SCOTUS Nominations if he wins.

I mean, assuming he's smart enough to put forth people that a R-controlled Congress would approve.

Can't vote on the Sabbath. In 19th century America, Wednesday is market day. So on Tuesday you've got folks traveling from the countryside to town so they can get to the market early the next day, but they've still got enough free time for one of the candidates to get them fighting drunk and shove them into a voting booth.

    Democracy!

That's got to be some of the most self-absorbed whining I've heard in a long time.

"Don't you dare criticize us for supporting a racist misogynist who is likely a Russian puppet! We're very sad and nobody makes good movies about us!"

Sorry, but I like having voting rights, and the fact my LGBT friends can get married and, you know, exist with slightly less fear that some inbred jackass from the hill country will tie them to a fence.

The most infuriating, thing, though is how the article forgets that 2016 is not the first time rural people have voted.

I'm from West Virginia. If that place were an independent nation, it would be considered a third world country and a prime example of neo-colonialism. Coal and other industries, largely owned out of state, exploit its natural resources and put little to none of that money back into the state economy. Leading to lovely things like endemic poverty and environmental catastrophes like a quarter of the state's water being poisoned. And you want to know the cold, brutal truth?

    It's largely their own fault.

The coal industry is dying, so do West Virginians support bringing in new energy industries or adapting their economy into something else? No, they blame the big bad government for killing coal and actively fight against other industries from moving in- such as blocking Tesla from building a factory in the state which would've created hundreds of jobs. Meanwhile, the state legislature they voted for busies itself deregulating milk pasteurization (and subsequently getting sick) and attempting to institute Right to Work which, as we all know, is exactly what an job-starved, poverty-stricken region needs.

Now, do you think these politicians based their campaigns on bringing jobs back to the area, on revitalizing one of most naturally beautiful and bountiful parts of the country? Or do you think it was "religious freedom," "stopping Sharia law from taking over the country," and restoring "law and order?"

And this applies to the whole country. Does anyone think that rural Kansas is better off after voting for Brownback?

Articles like this act like bigotry in rural America is a symptom of deeper troubles, or a reaction to those dastardly "urban elites." Trust me when I tell you that for large swaths of rural America, the hate is a feature not a bug.

it's been gone over before but that article is at odds with what many statistics say about trump voters, in particular that the rural poor is his biggest support base when it is anything but. poorer americans still vote democrat more often than republicans, and trump voters average income is higher than hillary voters.

his base is angry middle-upper class white men
