Gotta say, out of the whole series, this one has among the most memorable main parties, and I'm looking forward to replaying it. Plus, VIII was my first DQ ever.

DQVIII is the reason I'm excited for DQXI.
It's actually the only one I played and I loved it. I've been excited for more but IX was portable and X was an MMO so I sit here waiting for XI.
I don't replay stuff so the remake doesn't do anything for me but man I frikken loved that game so much more than I expected to.
I'm at the final dungeon, how long is it in general?
The final dungeon of 7? It depends.
It's of decent length on its own, however there's a point about halfway through where it prompts you to call for the aid of one of the spirits. Which spirit you call dictates which of four branching paths you have to run through to reach the final boss.
They all reach the final boss, however you can only do one path per run through. Each path leads to a different piece of end game equipment, so it sort of demands you eventually run through all four paths. (you can evac out and start again without fighting the final boss if you do it before taking the elevator to his room, however)
I picked up Dragon Quest VIII for 3DS after only getting to the boss mole back when I played it on PS2. I've been having a lot of fun so far, and the turbo combat speed is amazing. I've even made it past the boss mole this time.
I've made it to the Dark Shrine, and I'm having trouble with the boss:
I was able to beat Dhoulmagus' first form after a bit of metal slime grinding and actually realizing two of the clones have way less HP than the middle one, but now I'm having trouble fighting the demon form Dhoulmagus. I was able to withstand his attacks by keeping Hero and Angelo on almost exclusive healing duty, but then they ran out of MP and I died. I had Yangus attacking every turn and Jessica was Oomphing Yangus while casting defensive spells to take the edge of the magic attacks the team took, but with Dhoulmagus removing buffs every few turns that's about all she had time to do.
Character levels are Hero 30, Yangus 29, Angelo 29, and Jessica 28. Equipment isn't the best possible for all characters, but it hasn't been entirely neglected either. I don't have my 3DS in front of me at the moment to say what everyone has equipped, but Hero and Angelo are using swords, Yangus is using an axe, and I switched Jessica to a staff for the extra MP for the boss fight.
Any tips for this fight? I don't want to just grind another 5 levels if I can change my strategy a bit to defeat him.
You can make a bow that casts a weaker form of Multiheal (heals everyone) or just get one level for Angelo and get the actual spell. Being able to heal the whole party is a godsend for that fight
edit: okay not on my phone anymore. The bow is Cheiron's Bow and can be made with Eros's Bow (Garter + Hunter Bow) and a Power Shield (Cured Cheese + Magic Shield + Strength Ring).
Thanks for the info. I'll probably just grind the 1 level for Multiheal, didn't realize I was so close. Hopefully that will free up enough turns to kill the boss before I run out of fuel.

Definitely should. It's 10 MP and heals 100ish to everyone. Allows your main character to attack too. According to the wiki, he has about 2400 HP.
I wasn't counting damage, but I lasted about 15-20 turns the last time I tried it and Yangus was doing a little more than 100 damage with basic attacks while Oomphed. I was probably very close to killing him (especially because the last few turns were a desperation strike with everyone attacking before they croaked).
Huh, from what I've been reading, Red has a way better steal effect than Yangus to the point where she totally replaces him for anything besides metal slime farming.

I mean keep in mind, "better than garbage" isn't the same thing as "good"

And what are you basing this on?
Everything I'm reading says she's a beast. A passive that can auto-steal on the last enemy killed in an encounter(whether or not she gets the killing blow) and sword ability that hits 6-8 times for 40% weapon damage that even works with a metal sword. Even if you like Yangus better because <insert reason here>, that's still crazy.
Also a resurrect fan skill and an aoe fan skill that's completely superior to Thin Air while not even needing to go unarmed.
Outside of his music, there's nothing about Sugiyama that isn't a giant flashing sign that says 'massive bellend'. (see: radical historical revisionist)
Fortunately the music isn't actually all that bad on the western release even if it's not Orchestrated. It's nothing I'd write home about granted, but it's not bad.

Holy shit, you can save by going into the download-menu?
I've been testing out how abusive this is and oh man. It's "saves your current position", not "teleport to the nearest church on load". The irony is that they did this to prevent exploiting the download bonuses but it lets you exploit so many other things - especially the Casino. No more wasting time running over and back from deliberately spaced churches, you just save and load right in front of the machine. Turned 40 casino coins into about 11k so far with about an hour of overall auto-piloting the slime bingo in the first casino.
Haven't looked into them much, but I have read that there are multiple lists of items and each blue chest is locked to one list. Some have items that were previously limited to a fixed amount per new game, like gold nuggets.
Aye, some alchemy was a mess because of those items.
Just realised I don't know Red's and Morrie's Wisdom-thresholds.
If I remember right, the pointless minmaxing used to be raising Jessica's by 4 points, and mr. Hero's by about 100 points. Yangus and Angelo got more Wisdom than they had the ability to use, and Jessica's was nearly but not quite perfect.
So I wonder if Red and Morrie get more than they can use, or can use more than they get.

Red's wisdom can't be very high, she was totes into Yangus back in the day...

Yeah, but Yangus' Wisdom isn't very high, and it's still way, way more than he needs. Something like twohundred unemployed points.

Huh, I knew about Wisdom mechanics in DQVIII but didn't actually look into the nitty-gritty of the characters stats with relation to spells they learned and when they learned them. Does this mean I wasted all those Wisdom seeds on Jessica? Then again I'm choosing to go heavy on the Hero's boomerangs and spears anyway.

Nah, you're unlikely to run into Jessica's limit normally, even with the superboss. (PS2-release, that is.) She gets very close to it at level 99. Angelo might be worse, because he actually goes well beyond his by the end.
And of course Yangus doesn't really do much with the stat, but I imagine people are unlikely to invest in his anyway.
Magic-seeds, for MP, I like giving to Jessica even though I find other people are more likely to run low, because Magic Burst is fun
Life-seeds are sort of subjective. Aggro can be managed to a small extent, so you could let some people in the back be squishy. But a lot of enemies don't care because they were going to hit everybody anyway, and I like it when multiheals fill every bar the same.
Then there's Kamikaze, and it could get pretty strong, but it's on a character with other ways to hit hard.
So I was looking around to see when bonus item downloads were going to start for DQVIII, and it seems Nintendo has silently dropped support for it? Apparently they pulled all mention of the feature from their US and EU websites.
I didn't really expect them to bother to do much with it regardless. The unintended saving function of it is probably the best 'feature' that could possibly come out of it anyway.

That was only added to the US PS2 version. The English 3DS version is based on the Japanese version with no changes made.

Hey, any specifics on those fancy chests they added? Do they all pull from the same list, are they level-dependent or anything?
