The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley
It is made of win, but possibly just for girls, I don't know.
Discussion: I started reading The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich and it is different from every book I've ever read. It's pure history (with a little commentary by the author) but it's scary as hell. To just see what one man can do do a desperate country. Parts of it just make me angry.
Also the author is pretty prejudiced against the gays, which is disappointing, but it was written in ~1960.

Have you read her Sunshine? It's amaaazing.
I've been on a sci fi kick, so I am recommending The Cyberiad by Stanislaw Lem and Idlewild
by Nick Sagan.
I own Sunshine. I felt that certain portions were long-winded and irrelevant, but nonetheless well written and thus endurable.
If you like Robin McKinley, you will probably like Patricia McKillip. The Riddlemaster of Hed is excellent, in particular.
I also like to recommend Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. If you've seen the anime, understand that Miyazaki changed the book completely, so don't let it prejudice you one way or the other.

I loved Howl's Moving Castle. I much prefer the book to the movie.

oddly enough i'm reading this right now, about halfway through and I really like it so far
I started a shelfari account (i like it because it's easier for me to organize things there), i will be filling it in once i get home tonight since I forget most of the books I own:

is where it WILL be..currently there's barely anything on it
if you like that and haven't read the name of the rose by umberto eco (and also my name is red by orhan pamuk) they are mysteries about books as well! they're both really good reads.
after i go pick up my glasses i'm going to the library!
(funnily enough i do not need my glasses for reading, and in fact was told i have to take them off in order to read)

I read McKillip's Riddlemaster series and really hated it. . . . No accounting for taste, I guess. I'll definitely check out the Jones book, though.
Guys, I'm going to go buy some Richard Dawkins. Maybe "God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything" and "The God Delusion."
^^
I got my girlfriend The God Delusion and she loved it. Right after she read it she grabbed God Is Not Great. What I've read of them is awesome.
Is she different now that she has read them?
I know this one girl who actually wanted to go out with me at one time but since has gotten a boyfriend. I later saw her reading God is not Great and now she is the biggest Atheist and totally kicks ass. I want to yiff her so bad now.
Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain - because he is the anti-food network chef and he's awesome and c'mon, you know you want to find out about the seedy underbelly of restaurants.
The Yiddish Policeman's Union by Michael Chabon - most of you mooks have probably read Kavalier and Clay, and this is another excellent book. Its a detective/noir novel set in a world where the jews lost israel and set in Alaska. Sounds random, but an excellent read.

What is a good book involving hitmen and running from them?
Well, maybe one I'm not a little familiar with?

It's a stand alone science fiction / mystery novel; also, really good.
I cannot stress this enough
I found it incredibly trying, and I only made it about 40 pages in before giving up
But it's by Susannah Clarke.
also Michael Chabon is required reading here

The Road
Cat's Cradle
Dreamsongs: Volume 1
And I picked up a few more WW2 books from my dad that I may read.
I was gonna re-read The Baroque Cycle, but that's a ways off now.

Fucking you hate steampunk or you love it?
Either way, I don't think it really leans on its steampunkness too much. It's more just plain weird than steampunk.
A dude I drive to work gave me this book to read today and then four hours later I finished reading it. Great fuckin' book. Bleak and well-written.
I'm gonna read All the Pretty Horses and No Country for Old Men next.
^^
