The pretext is that state constitutions require it -- but it is absurd to claim that these constitutions require marriage to be defined in ways that were unthinkable through all of human history until the past 15 years. And it is offensive to expect us to believe this obvious fiction.

By the way, I'd really hate it if your piece wound up focusing on the old charge that I'm a homophobe."
"What old charge?" I've never heard of it.
"It's been raised before. It's been circulating on the Internet for a long time. It's really just one of those annoying things that happens. It's really ugly!"

But, and this is something I learned a long time ago, you really have to separate the author from the work. If Hitler had written the Harry Potter series, I would still have enjoyed them and I would still despise Hitler for the many atrocities he committed.
I don't understand why everything is a zero-sum game. People can't love and hate someone at the same time, or they choose not to. I love Ender's Game. And I love Card for having written it. And I hate him for his other attitudes. He is many things to me, but really he is nothing to me. He's not in my family so I don't have to love or hate the whole guy in one package. He's not a friend I have to judge or associate myself with. He's a guy that wrote a brilliant novel. And he's also a guy that's a complete asshole. It doesn't matter that it's the same guy because my relationship with him as the author of Ender's Game is a different relationship than the one I have with him as a homophobic fuckface. The second relationship could just as easily be with someone else.
When it comes to the book he wrote, I just don't give a shit that he's a homophobe. When it comes to the sum-total of who Orson Scott Card is then, yes, of course I care. When when I'm reading Ender's Game, I don't care who the sum total of Orson Scott Card is. When I'm reading a book, the author could be living, dead, the best person in the world, or Hitler and it doesn't matter to me at all.
And why should it? Why should I deprive myself of a good piece of art just because the artist is an insufferable twat? Why should I avoid Tom Cruise movies because he's a Scientologist (except for the obvious economic ones)? Why should I dislike Johnny Depp just because he's decided to have enough of America and has decided to become French or whatever? What does this matter? Actors are paid to lie to us. That's their job: Lying. Pretending to be someone else. Divorcing who they are from who they pretend to be. That's their job. I simply do not comprehend people that avoid movies with actors that are Scientologists or whatever for the same reason I don't understand why people give a shit about a book's author. It doesn't matter. The book matters, the film matters, and your opinion of either should be completely removed from the author.
Unless he's killing kittens to make the movie or something.

I read a book co-authored by Newt Gingrich once. It bombed so bad they had to destroy copies. It was about an alternate WWII where the US never got involved with the war and German agents were trying to invade Oak Ridge and Hanford and Los Alamos to kidnap Manhattan Project scientists and destroy research.
Or something like that.

aww thanks you guys you make me feel better when the batshit insane mormons bite
Are you and The Boy going to have a Mormon wedding, Eddy?
here is where I am staying this weekend
my boyfriend's house in Graham, the house that belongs to his mormon mom and mormon step father. They know I'm here and that we'll be sleeping together. HIs mom is super nice to me whenever we interact and has described me to strangers as 'really nice'
I am not allowed to sleep over at his staunch atheist dad's at all, not even on the couch.
I don't believe art can be fully separated from artist. Fiction is a form of art. If Card were a biographer or a historian I might feel differently, especially if his noxious views didn't come through in his work.
But yes, his odious views and extreme self-righteousness taint my enjoyment of his work. And honestly, I don't even like most of his books. I only really liked Speaker and Xenocide. Ender's Game was pretty "meh" and Children of the Mind was a terrible end to the series, in which Card went off on crazed tangents and destroyed the integrity of the characters he had made me care about.

By this logic you are sooooo not allowed to enjoy Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

I skimmed. Out of 148 recent posts made by you with my name in it, it certainly seems like a good many of them are "hey, Drez isn't infracted? Whoa" or "Drez, you should be infracted" or "Drez doesn't post anything worth reading" or something to that effect. It's really getting tiresome. Especially when I'm actually trying to communicate something that isn't nonsense. "olol everything Drez writes is tl;dr" - yeah, well fuck you.

i wasn't impressed
i mean it was alright.
maybe i read it when i was too old
Funny sidenote: He never meant it to be a book for kids apparently.
Yeah, the forward to Speaker for the Dead was probably my virgin encounter with unbearable literary pretention.
normally I would agree with you but I feel only rage towards him after reading this

which was linked in the gay marriage thread
Agreed. I liked Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide better, and I still have the copies I bought before I knew what a complete fuck he is.
I learned when I tried to loan Speaker to my friend and he just said "I won't read Card, and I'm shocked that you do."
And then he educated me.
I like to think of The Gays being unleashed was the result of a Dr. Doom experiment gone horribly awry.
Just don't pay for them.
I'm gonna update on a daily basis soon.

That would involve gunfire. Most likely.
