That articles basically says "You don't have PTSD, walk it off.".
Related note I spent all night last night dreaming about mass slaughter and the end of the world while shivering in a puddle of my own sweat and the most violent thing I watched yesterday was Tiger Woods choking at the Master's.

with all due respect, it does not say that
the author clearly states that PTSD is real, but lists reasons why he believes it's often misdiagnosed leading to some patients getting the wrong treatment

Wow, the post-partum article was interesting. I have a 3 month old and I would think that these doctors are taking a "biological" view of parenting that undermines some very useful tools that humans have developed. Even pop psychologists like Dr. Sears and his attachment parenting ideas reinforce that caring for currently living offspring provides a wealth of positive benefits for mother and child.
That runs counter to the idea that our bodies would tell us to "move on". Plus, wouldn't evolution say that if 15% of parents have an instinct to move on that children (or parents) would develop a response to ensure that their offspring survive. I mean kids aren't tabula rasa, and they do have a number of mechanisms at their disposal which ensure that they get cared for.

One In Five Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Suffer from PTSD or Major Depression
Nearly 20 percent of military service members who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan — 300,000 in all — report symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder or major depression, yet only slightly more than half have sought treatment, according to a new RAND Corporation study.
In addition, researchers found about 19 percent of returning service members report that they experienced a possible traumatic brain injury while deployed, with 7 percent reporting both a probable brain injury and current PTSD or major depression.
Many service members said they do not seek treatment for psychological illnesses because they fear it will harm their careers. But even among those who do seek help for PTSD or major depression, only about half receive treatment that researchers consider "minimally adequate" for their illnesses.

Man, that is fucked up.
[edit] After that whole fiasco with the Army hospital in Washington and shit, I'm really surprised there hasn't been more of a public outcry. Why aren't more people super pissed that the government is more concerned with the fiduciary value of an individual then in supporting someone who has rendered a great service to our nation? Fuck that.

my brother was a nuclear engineer on a fast attack sub
he's starting med school this fall
like
he went in for one thing and came out another?
I actually don't know if I'll join the nuclear program, considering that I'm pretty crappy at math

I'd love to join the military one day in a non-combat capacity. I'm more or less a pacifist, but having military experience is pretty much a pre-requisite for political aspirations of any kind, and it just generally looks great on applications and stuff.
Embedded journalism, paralegal, and stuff of that nature would be an awesome thing that I enjoy while simultaneously feeling like I served mah country.

It's also about how much a soldier is to be paid for disability.
There was actually a series of Salon articles on this, primarily based on a taped conversation with an Army psychologist.

What motive does the Army have to misdiagnose PTSD?

If you're crappy at math, perhaps nuclear engineering is not your cup of tea Jordi LaForge.
