ODST - We need Ghosts. Lots of Ghosts.

Halo 3: ODST was released today.

What does ODST stand for? Apparently it's Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, and they're the crazy dudes that drop down from the sky in... drop pods. You play one of them, a silent rookie, who's separated from his squad in the initial drop and wakes up six hours after the big battle for New Mombasa, and has to wander around at nighttime figuring out what happened to his squad. As you play through the single player, you also unlock new firefight characters/levels.

And occasionally you'll play as a member of the squad in a neat little flashback segment.

You also have this thing called a VISR which sort of doubles as night vision and also a thing to point out enemies/friendlies/objects.

What makes an ODST different from Master Chief? Well, you're not as tough (kind of, though it's really not that significant of a drop in toughness), you can't jump as high, you can't dual-wield weapons, you can't use equipment, and you can't kill a Brute with one hit. Two hits, though, sure. But you do get a silenced SMG, and the pistol in it is basically the Halo 1 pistol.

Oh yeah, there's also an awesome new mode in it called Firefight! It's basically Horde mode from Gears of War 2, but Halo. Also, there's a bonus round where every skull is activated, and I'm probably going to die instantly in that round.

And the game is actually 2 discs, with the second disc including the Halo 3 multiplayer complete with all the DLC and a couple of new maps. Yay?

It's pretty good

I mean, I think if you like Halo, you'll like this

there is something really off about the faces in this game, though, but I think Halo 3 had that problem too

Yes? I think it really depends on how much you think you'd play Firefight/the Halo 3 multiplayer, because apparently the single-player campaign is pretty short.

disc 1 is firefight and campaign, disc 2 is halo 3 multiplayer

This game is pretty neat so far, I've posted some reasons already in the LA Times thread.

So we went to Best Buy last night for the midnight release, got there at 5 til but there were only 6 people in line! I was also surprised that they gave out a bunch of swag for buying it there: a Firefight shirt (I was so happy that the shirt was blue, instead of black!), a Halo: ODST glow-in-the-dark mini-frisbee, an ODST wristband...and a $10 Best Buy giftcard! WHOO!

I had actually preordered this on Best Buy along with Modern Warfare 2, because they had that whole 'buy one 360 game, get the second half-off' thing

but then I find out that they charge your card right there and hold it until the games come out, which I wasn't happy with

Yeah, I actually really like that, because while I don't mind playing deathmatch or whatever against random folks, I can't imagine playing co-op with people who I don't know at least somewhat well.

Also, Adam Baldwin is in this game, right? I'm not imagining that, right?
