Surprise it's the [Final Fantasy Thread] FF12 Retrospective
If only the rest of the game weren't so damn annoying. I LOVED the combat to death in that game, I just couldn't finish it due to everything else.
Eye of the tiger, man, eye of the tiger. Because it really is a great game.
Like I said before, the massive minigame morass (ain't alliteration kewl?) was kind of irritating, but you can't fault the game for trying to give players variety. Some of them were really fun, like Gunner's Gauntlet, but Sphere Break and Blitzball (in all its forms) can just go sit in the corner. At the very least it was nice of them to allow you to explore pretty much the whole world from the start at your own pace. As for the story and the general Gullwing goofiness, I just rolled my eyes, laughed along, and stayed focused on the fun stuff.
Where the heck is XoB anyway? Should we get the show started without him? It's like that unspoken rule in college that if the professor doesn't show up for half an hour or so after class starts you can assume they're not coming and you can leave early. People want discussion, man!
I think my FFX-2 save is stuck at 97% or something like that. It's really frustrating to say the least. I admit that one day I'd love to replay it right now, but my backlog is full right now (Romancing Saga, FF12 and FF5a) and on top of that I've got a deadline now (March can't be here soon enough).

I didn't get enough FF IX fanart, music, or official art, and it ain't happening until I do.
If you think that's bad, you're gonna need a whole hell of a lot more if you ever want to see FFX-2!

I don't really remember much from FFX as I played and beat it around the time it first came out. Even with playing X-2 recently, I don't remember much from the original game outside of a couple of setpieces and major plot points they reiterate in X-2. An example is that I totally forgot about the Yar Yar aliens existing in the FFX world and thought they were a X-2 invention until I went to the Moonglow and remembered that damn shoopuf bullshit.

Crap...I used to have a really good YRP cosplay on my computer a few years back. To bad it died and I lost all my files.
Did we really get something worse than "old man wearing a giant condom"?
OK, I guess that Cid wasn't awful despite his visual design. So maybe [strike]Gackt[/strike] [strike]Noctis[/strike] [strike]Severus[/strike] this Cid has a chance.
He just looks so... generic JRPG character. And the weird thing is I can't think of a single character in an actual released JRPG that he looks like much at all, except Genesis with a dye job. Oh, and Gaignun Kukai, but he's not generic. But still, the Cid-13 picture just oozes the feeling of genericness at me in levels approaching Rinoa.

So far it seems that FF13 will be adhering to the "no one over 40" rule in JPRGs.

Yeah, I haven't played VI. I tried to once about 8 years ago, but I didn't get hooked after 30 minutes in, and it wasn't my game, so I never really finished it.
I've thought about it recently, but it seems it's a bit out of touch for me to find a copy. I think the Advance version is the only chance I have really, but I haven't quite gotten there.
Besides, I still need a copy of FFV advance, and I know I love that game, despite having not beaten it.
From now until the end of the thread I'm going to spend a day talking about various FF games in detail. Feel free to correct any mistakes I made and to add any good fan art, song choices, or opinions as we go along. I plan to do one a day or so until the end of the thread. So here we go.
Preface: Ah FFX. The first PS2 game I ever beat, not counting the story mode of DOA 2. This game has a fond place in my heart. I don't love it like IV, VI, or heck even VIII and IX, but it is special. It was so amazing looking when it came out, and the new and improved CTB and unusual leveling system, while aggravating at first really grew on me. Plus haters fuck off, the voice work and general localization was handled very well, besides the stupid lip sync issues.

What's the Deal?
As the first Playstation 2 RPG, it had a lot to live up to, and a lot of hype around it. Remember that they first showed off Ifrit when they were also showing off a near completed build of FF IX? What a difference, as FFX looks almost alien in comparison. From super deformed medieval PSX awesomeness to this other worldly south pacific dream land. What a treat we were all in for when it came almost announced to the US in late 2001. I was going to see The Fellowship of the Ring when I heard some excited nerds talking in the food court, this game had shipped to stores early and was there. Even better it was my friend's birthday and he had a pocket full of cash and was more than willing to buy this surprise birthday gift. What a gift this game was. The rest of the RPGs on the PS2 at that time were either trash or quirky hidden gem psx up-ports. This game singlehandedly told people that the PS2 was going to be every bit the haven for JRPGs the PSX was. I cannot stress enough how big of a seed change this game was. Gone was the ATB which had served the series for five games, replaced with the lightning quick Conditional Turn Based system, in which attacks were queued up on a visable chart to the right of the screen and all party members could be switched in whenever. Do to that change they programmed in certain enemies which could only be taken out easily by certain members. Tidus's sword could catch four legged enemies that would dodge Auron's massive two hander, but only he could break the armor on the giant bug while Rikku disabled the machina in one quick movement and Wakka could knock that pesky bat out of the sky. Only Lulu could take out pesky elemental monsters quickly while Kimarhi...stood there stoically? The music in this game is underrated and under appreciated, and it is also the first time Uematsu had help on it. The story? Sin is Jecht. Meg Ryan wants to score with a hot chick with a giant bow on her back so he follows Samurai Micheal Keaton and Bender on a suicide mission to stop a demonic bug whale thing.
What sucks about it?
Common complaints are:
Game is Too Linear: It really is extremely linear. Nothing you can do about that. You can explore a bit near the very end, but even then the whole interconnected map thing sort of flies in the face of fly anywhere, discover new things. You can still do that, mind you, but only with co-ordinates and passwords.
Can't Name Your Mans: You can name Meg Ryan, but this is going to be an issue with voice acting until some really advanced voice programming technology becomes available. They get around Meg Ryan by using pronouns or just skipping it, gotta love immersion!
Sphere Grid Sucks: This is one of the few times I'm really going to call people out on having a dumb opinion. Sphere Grid is a fantastic way to keep the ability to make your man's overpowered...but not until the end of the game. They do a great job of limiting the little buggers needed for truly unruly abuse of the leveling mechanic until you get the airship. Characters keep their base "job" for 90% of the game, that ain't bad at all. A great compromise if you ask me.
Not enough Jecht: Seriously.
The Story Sucks: Nope, just the whole Sin revelation could have used a bit more explaining. It's got nothing on VIII though, and the final boss does make more sense than IX.
Most Anti-Climatic Boss Ever: This boss sucks. At least the one before him is awesome and the ending is probably the best in the series.
Blitzball/Optional Secret Weapon Minigames suck: Underwater rugby that you only have to do once. I like it, a lot of people don't. The other minigames? Well, considering the first time I actually got to go through the game was in return for beating the butterfly chase and the Chocobo game, I don't really mind them even though they might be a bit too hard for some to stomach.
THE LAUGHING MAN: The laugh is supposed to be uncomfortable, it's even worse in Japanese. Meg Ryan is trying his best to get some action though, so you can't really blame him.
Which Version to Play?
Oooh, here's a fun one. One console, two versions. Euros got more content (a lot more, Dark Aeons and a whole new rank of baddies at the monster arena), but slightly dodgey framerate and correct me if I'm wrong, letterboxing. US version runs like a champ, but has no additional content. Which is hilarious as the INT version came out only a month later, so we could have gotten those extras if the game hadn't been pushed up for holiday sales! Cursed getting the game out during the busiest time of the year! Damn you Square!
Fun Facts:
First Timers: CTB, First game on a DVD/first game on only one optical disk, Voice Acting, seamless transition between towns and field locations, summons staying on the board, overdrives for summons, JECHT, first FF game with a direct Sequel, a whole boatload of new summons to match the South Pacific theme.
Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground: Here's all the hidden stuff, stolen from Gamefaqs
and the passwords are GODHAND, VICTORIOUS, and MURASAME
No Real Fun Glitches: Again, nothing amazing.
CHEMISTRY ALERT: Rikku is a chemist. Rikku is an integral part of a no-sphere run, and using broken ass mixes has allowed the truely hardcore to beat every boss in the game without a single sphere besides the almighty Penance.
How Yojimbo Works: Basically always pay him 1000 gil, never let him die, always have him at full overdrive, and keep on summoning and paying him until his compatability is maxed. From that point on you have about a 1/4 chance of always getting Zanmato even without paying.
Kimarhi is Useless: Worry not, as the one time you have to use him solo his opponents are level appropriate.
Very few people actually hate X. A lot of people love it, a lot of people find it not very special, but very few hate it.
My big problem with writing about Ten is that it's not very interesting to write about. It's linear, everyone has an opinion about it, it's very well made, no real glitches. What you see is what you get!

True. I mean it is far less controversial than 7 or 8 really. But I think that is testament to how well it was made. The story is pretty cohesive, so there isn't much room for interpretation outside of the whole "dream people" thing.
EMO Cid. Ok not really, let me see if I can find a pic.
Mother of a FUCK do I wish that word was banned already. There is literally nobody in this thread who knows what it even means so they just toss it in at random times.
And this is who the new Cid reminds me of.
Which puts him on the completely opposite spectrum of "emo".
Man I wish I didn't let my friend borrow my copy of X-2 and then never return it. It was hard for me to get into but now I really want to give it another chance.
The Sphere Grid was cool. There was something addictive and satisfying about seeing those little candy colored spheres light up as you progress. A lot better than just plain leveling up.
Biggest issue with this game was that it was too goddamn easy with the exception of a couple bosses. Even if you don't level up a lot and just get Anima, you're pretty much set. Even Omega weapon only had 99999 hp, meaning you could technically one shot him. They raised his hp in the International release I think, but eh.
