Surprise it's the [Final Fantasy Thread] FF12 Retrospective
Is the Kingdom Hearts game for DS any good? I'm thinking of getting a DS Lite soon, and I was gonna get at least one rpg with it.
I haven't played a Kingdom Hearts game before..

then kingdom hearts DS is not a good place to start
So I'm just now playing through Crisis Core (I know, super late to the party). Am I ever going to actually get to play the game? It feels like I watch a cutscene, fight a battle, then watch two more cutscenes.
Most of the JRPGs on both so far this gen are meh anyway. RPGs in general, I'd say..
Must Play:
Borderlands, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Disgaea 3(Mainly for the story, combat is pretty samey), Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Tales of Vesperia, Demon's Souls, Valkyria Chronicles
Worth your time:
Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Fable 2
Maybe:
Enchanted Arms (horribly executed but great battle system), The Last Remnant (wonderful ideas, terrible use of technology), Magna Carta II(Nice gameplay, corny story/dialogue), Folklore
Fuck right off:
Too Human, Eternal Sonata
Kay
Star Ocean
Seriously, You might get aids if you play this
Infinite Undiscovery
Fixed
Fix'd...with a vengeance!
I would get the 360 myself since it has Mass Effect(my favorite game this generation) and Tales of Vesperia(My favorite JRPG of this generation so far(FFXIII may take its place when it comes out), Still no American release for the PS3 version announced yet).
However, if you want Versus, you're going to need a PS3. Like APZ was saying, the true winners have both consoles...or at least a friend with the other.
Do you think I'll like FF13? I had absolutely no interest in 12.
Dude...FF13 looks like a mix of 10 and 7(some of the bestest FFs ever). There are a lot of heathens in this thread who cringe at that idea. But to me...and probably to you...it looks awesome. And yeah, I didn't like FF12 either. Just played Dragon Age...and Dragon Age was a better FF12 than FF12 was in my mind.

Yeah, you really should at least play Kingdom Hearts II first. And probably Chain of Memories. The original would be a good idea as well.
Honestly, it's a game for people who've played the entire series and want to mess around with Roxas. If you're in the series for the Disney stuff, you probably won't like this game. If you feel that the Disney stuff does nothing but stand in the way of the heartdarkheartdarkdark, then the game is probably worth a shot.
Also note that the game itself is balanced for handhelds, instead of being a stripped-down console game. The continuousness of the main titles has been replaced by a structure focused on short trips into the same worlds, where you go in, do one thing, then leave. There's less variety than in the console titles, leading you to become familiar with how to navigate each of the worlds.
Also, it's Kingdom Hearts on the DS. And they somehow managed to make it look pretty good.
FF7 was good, but not biblical, and the fans... god the fans... make me hate that game.
6 is the best, 10 was brilliant but not as good.
FF7 was biblical to me only because it was the first RPG I put more than 30 minutes into. Can you imagine what that's like for a 10 year old?

I actually got interested in VII in a backwards way.
Firstly, the only RPG I had played/beaten before it was MarioRPG.
Then VII came out and I had no idea what it was. My buddy got the game and he had beaten it. I said some of it looked kind of neat, and asked him to show me the ending. He was really reluctant to, because he thought if he showed it to me, I wouldn't touch the game. How wrong he was.
After he showed it to me, I tried playing it, but I played it like I played MarioRPG, in that I ran away from about 30-40% of all my battles.
By time I got the Materia Keeper in Mt. Nibel, I was done. I couldn't do it, the shit was too hard. I talked to my friend about it, and he said, yeah, you can't run away, you're all screwed up. Either power level, or start over.
I chose to start over. Had an amazing time with the game after that.
What's funny is my wife is in a very similar situation. The first thing she ever saw of the game was the famous Aerith died scene. She thought it was retarded and thought Aerith was retarded for being so pink.
When she played the game a year later, she absolutely loved it, and even cried a bit when Aerith died, as she had completely forgotten about watching it before.
i wonder why the materia keeper got such a reputation for being a brick wall
i mean he obviously gave me trouble the first time through, but that was because i was young and a moron and thought magic was unnecessary and also triggered vincent's limit break
carry armor, on the other hand, deserves every inch of his bad rap
I don't remember Materia Keeper being a hard boss at all
I beat him on my first try, I'm pretty sure

Hmm...FF7 was my first RPG too, kinda. I'd been a arcade/action game kid for most of my life, owned a Sega all that jazz and I'd never really seen an RPG until the Playstation came out. I remember I got the demo for FF7 and I played the crap out of it, but I was still 12 or so at the time and didn't have the money to afford the real game.
Luckily, I would get about 30 bucks from my grandma and this was about 3 years after FFVII had come out(I believe FFVIII was out by then), so it was dirt cheap. Told my brother to go get it for me, but he got Legend of Legaia instead because he couldn't find it.
I was pissed at first, but I played the hell out of that game(so in a sense it was my first real RPG). However, I would go back to play FFVII and think it was a pretty excellent game, that with Legend of Legaia would end up making RPGs my favorite genre of games. I don't really think it is the "greatest game eva" like some of its more diehard fans would say, but it still has a special place for me.

Well 2 things
First - He was the first boss that had a hard hitting all attack. Every boss before that was only hitting one, maybe 2 of your guys at a time. This guy was hitting and possibly killing your dudes in one shot.
Second - Oh god, Vincent, you dirty bastard, why are you healing the boss for 400hp almost every turn.
Maybe I just don't remember, I thought that guy took 2 tries for me
I'm trying to think of a boss that really stepped all over me, but I'd need a list or something
demon gate gave everyone trouble their first time through, i am fairly sure
even on my playthrough a few months ago when i knew enough about materia to break the game in half, i was still a little concerned by the thing's damage output

Demon Gate never bothered me, but you also have Bahamut for that fight, as well as Odin, and if you side-stepped to Wutai, then you should be leveled just fine.
Also, IIRC you had Protect, which meant you had Barrier to cast on yourself, which did wonders for his hardest hitting attack.
Demon Gate is a bigger problem than Materia Keeper or Carry Armor simply because you absolutely can't level up at all before you fight him. There are no random encounters going on.
I had trouble with all three, but typically Carry Armor was the worst.

my enthusiasm for ff13 has all just disappeared suddenly.
If we've got this {Leona Lewis} as the main protagonist of the story... then just... bleeugh..
Err, what? She's no more the main protagonist or anything else to do with the story than Marilyn Manson is the protagonist of Dragon Age because they used one of his songs in the ads.

Does this mean that Bon Jovi isn't the main character of Crystal Bearers!?

I think a video of some footage of the game with one of her song over the top of it would be absolutely hilarious though.
Pokemon Safari - Sneasel, Pawniard, ????
I'm not.
And most people aren't.
Neither am I. Though it helps that most things I don't understand are really just answered with, "A wizard did it." or something of the like.

FF6 > FF10 > FF7 > FF5 > FF(z) ... > FF8 (what a horrid abomination)

Well maybe I'll buy it on 360 just because I can.
Whoever thinks otherwise is dumb.
Also FFXIV I'm skeptical of since I hated FFXI.

fucking lapis laser
I also didn't fully understand the appropriate way to level up materia either, so my magic was lacking my first time around.
