Blegh, first day was a huge snub for Alan Wake. Sure, they acknowledged it for the best original game, but nobody really made a case for it, and it was quickly pushed aside. I understand they felt the gameplay got repetitive, but if you're going to make a case for Deadly Premonition I think Alan Wake deserves a second look.

    Or chiptunes.

Or more hilariously nintendocore, though that's something else entirely.

edit: I would sure as shit miss Brad.

What's with all the Brad hate? Jeff maintains much more annoying opinions than Brad, although I still like Jeff a lot. Then again, I liked Garnett and Shane from 1Up Yours.

Is the interwebbernets just overloaded with gaming podcasts, because I've recently started debating if I should start one up. With almost a decade in the industry working for various companies, running their sites, writing for them, consulting for them, etc, as well as a year+ of live broadcast media in the videogame industry, I thought that maybe I could actually make a half decent one. Would I have any chance of carving out a decent niche?

Brad is the foil. If he isn't there, someone like him needs to be there, the guy that likes all the artsy shit like Flower, etc.

But yeah, he just never seems like he wants to be there. Seems like he doesn't really like his job.

A mediocre large diaphragm condenser and a decent preamp/soundcard is not super high end. That's like $300.

I just personally find guys with lower voices a lot easier to listen to than those with high voices. Another reason I dig the Bombcast so much. It's really jarring to me when they have someone like Jeff Green or Alex Navarro on there. I like hearing their thoughts and opinions and so on, but if everyone on your podcast sounds like that I probably would find myself barely ever listening to it.

I don't dislike Brad, I just found him particularly grating this time around. Jeff too. But that's not new. He's usually antagonistic and negative about the weirdest things.

The thing about these guys is that I don't really listen to them because I find them particularly insightful, more so because they're just entertaining and fun to listen to.

I'm really happy to see, so far, Heavy Rain and Alan Wake not popping up in a too serious manner. While I think both those games are far from terrible, I do think they are stunningly overrated by a vocal few. Which makes me me even more surprised that Brad didn't bring them up more, because he seemed to rather enjoy them earlier this year.

I don't really agree with these lighter choices so far (Bayonetta, while kinda rad, best debut? John Marsden knocked out for the almost nearly joke of York? Oh well) but I'm glad they have them and do the debates. Most sites just throw out the arbitrary choice and don't talk about them. These guys air the laundry and I respect the shit out of that.

    - She is a witch
    - Her clothes are made from her hair
    - Her special attacks also involve using her hair (usually in the shape of a giant fist or stiletto heel)
    - She has a set of guns named Scarborough Fair (Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, named after the awesome Simon and Garfunkel song), two in her hands, two on her heels
    - But you can attach shotguns to the hands and feet as well
    - You get samurai swords to use
    - Entering bullet climax is essentially a breakdance that you get to control as you shoot down enemies
    - She sprouts butterfly wings during a double-jump
    - She quotes Dante and says "Flock off, feather-face" at one point
    - There are Space Harrier-inspired levels. I'm not going to spoil what these entail but they're a nice change of pace and pretty awesome
    - Probably my favorite addition to the whole DMC-style formula, they make it really easy to dodge attacks if you pay attention, and if you wait till the last possible second to dodge, it activates Witch Time (bullet time), which gives you a few seconds to whack enemies while they're slowed down. Using this liberally definitely helps maintain a feel of control (or at least a small sense of power) during all the crazy action. I love it.

If it's 10 bucks though, I can take a chance.

On Marston and Best New Character: As much as I liked RDR, John Marston really was just a GTA-style cipher protagonist. He had actual character at the very beginning and end of the game, and his mannerisms were really neat, but that leaves him as rich a character as Niko Bellic.

    Mordin was a great choice.

The question is, do you like character action games like DMC or Ninja Gaiden? If so, this is really worth looking at because it really takes this genre of gaming to a whole new level. In many ways it feels like a fresher experience for it.

The way I look at Bayonetta is that it amplified what I loved about DMC and NG, and combined it with some of the mindblowing level designs and thoughtfulness of Mario Galaxy.

I don't think they're as comparable as they seem at first glance. The timeframe makes them very different games in terms of tone, and some people just aren't into the western setting. Not everybody's going to like every game.

Bayonetta is the one game I've played where I feel like - at all times - I have absolute control of my character. The combat system is simplistic and yet complex as hell. There's only two real attack buttons - kick and punch - but the combo system, tied to wicked weaves (complete combos give you extra-powerful attacks), tied to dodge offsets (the ability to maintain your combo through your dodges), parry systems, witch time, and weapons makes it combat fluid, graceful and enjoyable. It never feels unfair, never feels like the game is cheating, never feels like Bayonetta is doing anything that I don't want her to do. Combat in Bayonetta is a joy the likes of which I have never, ever seen equalled.

The story is bizarre and Japanese and wonderfully voice acted (YMMV) and all around inanely great if you're into that sort of thing (I am, it's fantastic). But what really sells Bayonetta is the gameplay first, the oodles of style second, and the ridiculous world third.

The dodge thing I mentioned? I think it really helps with the accessibility of the game. On normal difficulty, it's not nearly as balls-hard as a DMC or NG.

Plus it has in-game combat tutorials, they don't just throw a menu at you full of moves like the other two do and say "go." They teach you what you need to get buy, and it's up to you if you want to add your own personal finesse to it.
