Sending the 360 in for repair

So, the old thing has finally undergone Red Ring of Deathamorphosis. Mildly frustrating, but hey its the first time this has ever happened and I bought it at release. Can't complain too much. My question is though if I send it in for repair am I going to be getting my present harddrive back or am I going to get a new 360 back with a new harddrive and lose all my shit?

It wouldn't be an insurmountable loss, but I'd still like to know what to expect.

You keep your harddrive. The only thing you send is the core 360 itself.

When I sent mine in for repair, they just sent me a different 360 and had configured it so that all my game licenses or whatever were transferred to the replacement system. However, it basically considered my hard drive to be from another system, so the downloaded games wouldn't run without being logged in to Xbox Live.

To solve this problem, I had to go into each game's profile thing and select "Download again" and the license would be properly transferred. The only game it actually completely redownloaded for me was Battlefield 1943 -- all the rest just seemed to make sure the game was there.

The whole procedure to do this was explained in the instructions they sent with the replacement system.

    Have you tried playing offline?

When I got my elite, I re downloaded the video codecs for Tversity so that I could watch stuff from my pc, and it makes me stay online just to run the codecs, also, same for the movies and games.

Yeah, it all works for me offline now, but it didn't before I did the whole "download again" thing.

I had to have mine replaced after it RRODed, and all the licensing business transferred over fine. Mine is rarely even connected to the internet if I'm not downloading something to it.

Yeah, I went back in and started redownloading everything again and it looks like it's sticking this time.

I'm in the process of working on an article that will explain all this. In the mean time, going to http://www.xbox.com/drm and going through those steps will fix your problem.
