So, opinions on the Archos 9? What about the Viliv UMPCs? I'm looking for something like that, and I don't think the iPad will work for me....I have a lot of acquired video files I want to be able to play on something better than my aging Axim.

I think the Archos 9 is great but at the same time I think the Adam will be better. That is what I am waiting for really..
a lot of these look really slick, but as i asked in the iPad thread, i'm looking for something that has the capacity for digital art.
i wonder if Wacom will get in on this action.
Why couldn't you use any random tablet pc? I see on fatwallet you can get a thinkpad one refurbished for 400 bucks.
price and quality of tablet. i have to do extensive research on every cheap tablet to see if it's good for digital painting - pressure sensitivity, tilt sensitivity, durability of screen and pen, etc. usually the good ones are hella expensive.
do you know if the thinkpad one is a solid drawing tablet pc?

also the modbook is ridiculously expensive.
Hmm... I honestly couldn't tell you. I can say that I was impressed with that machine last year when I saw it at a friend's house. I lusted over it then, but I can't justify any cost right now.
I believe it had a "stylus aware" screen, so that should be a huge point in its favor. I could also be thinking of the wacom tablet I was toying with around the same time, though.
Yeah, except for the touchscreen ones which use a different digitizer, almost all Tablet PCs use Wacom Active digitizers, which means stuff like pressure sensitivity. Talking about them though, isn't that HP convertible that was announced at CES out by now? Has anyone seen any reviews?

That is good right? Wacom makes the ones used for art so are the ones they put in these touch screens just as good?

Depends what you are wanting? If you just want to "touch and possibly drag" then the new touch screens are everything you need. If you want to get the same feedback as a pen/pencil on paper, I think you need the wacom style one. I know when I toyed with it, it was incredibly awesome to be able to get darker lines by pressing a touch harder with the stylus. (Not to mention sensing the angle you are holding the pen, along with which end. Being able to flip the pen to get an "eraser" was slick.)
And, there is every chance I am wrong on the new touch screens. Maybe they do support pressure sensitive stuff.

I doubt it. It looks like all they are for is zoom and drag.
I'll definitely be selling my ASUS EeePC 901 so I can buy an ARCHOS 9. It's fantastic.
I was so planning on buying an Archos 9 but the lack of an SSD option, craptacular Windows 7 starter edition - that lacks tablet functionality - and no multitouch ruined it for me. IIRC the Asus T91MT is about 1/4" thicker, slightly lighter, resolves all of the above problems and is cheaper to boot. I had the T91MT and it's build quality is fantastic. I returned it due to having two with touchscreens that were VERY inaccurate - turns out that using the asus calibration utility, rather than the windows one, would've completely resolved it.
Old-ish news by now, but still looks nifty and a bit of a different take on the "slate"
I hope it is real because they have the idea of what the tablet should be doing.
That looks neat, but I had a hard time following the gestures. One time she used the pinch, she closed a notebook, another time she flipped out to a larger view. Pie menus FTW, though.
I do like the "One pane is content creation/storage, the other is content retrieval" metaphor they had going. And writing anywhere on the screen with a pen is just neat in general.
Also, what happened to Microsoft Origami from eons ago? Was that just going to be a weird netbook type thing, or a tablet hybrid?
Agree with the Courier. The iPad, I was meh about, but the Courier, that looks really innovative, llike nothing I've seen before, other than the Hitchhikers Guide or The Young Lady's Illustrated Primer from "The Diamond Age". I almost think that's something that the iPad almost...lost in a way. It dosn't look like sci-fi made real. The iPhone did, I think even though I'm not a fan, it was something that we've only read about, and then there it was.
I just hope they put it out soon...I would love for them to announce WinMo7, and then say, "Oh, one more thing." And start showing off the Courier. I really don't think anyone could put the iPad and the Courier next to each other and say, "Gimme the iPad!"
MS. Needs to release it soon though. If it comes out two years from now and even if it's perfect and way better than the ipad it won't matter. You can just tell from this thread vs the ipad thread no one seems to care about the other tablets. So if the other companies don't act fast they won't get a market share
Oh, no question. They have...ohh, lets say, 6 months? The 3G verson is released in April, so that'll have them 3 months ahead, enough time to have a big show of it in April to try and overshadow the iPad release. 3 months for hype to build, and boom. But any longer than that, it'll be too late. Sooner is better no question, and isn't there some sort of show coming up soon?

The problem is that nobody has the audience that Apple does. There will be some slick devices. Hell, just those demoed at CES were slick enough. Some with an already similar price. Unless you were looking, you didn't hear about them. 3d TV was about all the general public heard.
Agreed, Apple has a MASSIVE mindshare. But, at the same time, that can work against you. I think a lot of people were meh about the iPad just because of the extreme levels of hype. This is the chance to swoop in, If MS uses the upcoming show to show off WinMo7 and the Courier, the ball could start rolling, with articles about how MS and Apple are gonna be fighting for the tablet market, anything to get people talking. Of course, for all I know, the Courier could be dead in the water, and it's never going to come out. When's the last time we had any info? November?

Is it two displays and you can see through one to the other, or can an eInk display actually go full color and backlit somehow?
It has a switch that allows you turn on and off "e-ink" mode. It is only one screen.
i wonder if Wacom will get in on this action.
They already have that.. The modbook

I'm lusting over it pretty hard. Can't justify it, though.
Link?
You know they are releasinga new extra thin multi touch soon..
D'oh! coupon/whatever expired.
I can repost here if it comes up again.
And you really think this is too thick? Really? I mean, it isn't the sexiest thing on the block, but I'd love to have one.

I think so but I am not sure if it will be any good for art.

1000 bucks and has full blown laptop specs.
