you know, in Dragonball Evolution Goku wasn't asian and I didn't hear anyone flipping out over that
hell, the only asians in the whole cast were roshi, yamcha and mai
and don't even get me started on how mai didn't work for piccolo, and the way they handled the oozaru was completely wrong
man, I'm all upset now, way to open old wounds
I don't think anyone cared, because nobody really did care. Like the characters being the proper ethnicity wasn't going to make that movie any better.
Just as it wouldn't make this movie any better than it already is going to be, whatever that is. Except a lot of fans are all crying into their milk about it.
Silly argument
but it's totally racist that the movie based on the show created by white people that features people of indeterminate race doesn't have more asians in it

No. Neither situation is racist

Shepard from Mass Effect looks like Jack SHEPARD from LOST. I'm sure this "coincidence" has never been noticed before.
also add in just a pinch of Channing Tatum
I said this in the last Lost thread and people thought it was just coincidence. Also the fact that his default name is John (Jack is a nickname for John...which I don't get but whatever).

seriously though, this movie is the least necessary thing ever.
I just don't understand why he feels that he should tell this story again. they did it right the first time and that was already in a medium with moving pictures

did he actively seek this out or was it offered to him by some moronic producer type

It's less about the individual movie and more about the overall pattern/history. People WERE upset about Dragonball, about 21 (based on actual Asian Americans, cast with whites), about Extraordinary Measures (ditto), about every opportunity for an American of Asian heritage to be portrayed positively... and skipped over.
As for if it's "racist," I take offense at a cast call requesting "Caucasian or any other ethnicity" for characters who were originally heavily steeped in Asian culture, who in some cases were of dark complexion.
I loved the show, too. I'm just trying to weigh in with the perspective of a fan, a consumer, and an American of color.
And I named myself "racebending_mike" because I don't want to hide my allegiance to the movement. I'm trying to be transparent, not troll... I hope that comes across.

i think that given the cost of making a movie such as this one, the desire to cater to the majority population of the united states by casting one of them as the lead is clearly more of a fiscal one than anything else

Right, it's financial - but the assumption that actors of color are unmarketable is rooted in a lot of old thinking.
When Will Smith knocks out another blockbuster, people think "Of course. It's Will Smith." But just 15 years ago, Samuel L. Jackson remarked that it was "still strange for Hollywood to hire black actors."
Television's been making great strides in diversity lately. But film executives still think: "An actor of color... NOT Will Smith? Not Denzel? Sounds dangerous. Let's make a movie about characters all Americans can relate to, like giant blue aliens."
Even when something's hugely successful with non-Western influences, like the original Last Airbender cartoon, a film producer's going to step in and say "The original was popular for some reason, but you know what would be even better? If Katara and Sokka were light-skinned. Put that in the cast call." [re: casting call, "Caucasian or any other ethnicity," shades of "No Irish need apply"]
I finally FINALLY managed to buy Book 2 and 3. and I finally have another thread to talk about getting it in $31 for Book 2 and $40 for Book 3
each one was about 10cents less at Walmart but then the shipping cost was higher.
I don't know if $40 is a good price but its the lowest price I've seen for Book 3 in a while. Or ever?

i am not saying that i find the argument logical or reasonable, i am simply putting forth what i would expect the logic of a producer to be
the ten top grossing movies of last year had zero actors of color in lead roles, unless you count avatar's blue-skinned people

i remember watching Toonami, and they did that thing where they showed all the decent fanart they would get.
and the coolest one ever was with the main dude from outlaw star and vegeta.
vegeta had his hand around outlaw star dude's neck and outlaw star dude had his big crazy pistol up into vegeta's chin. was pretty rad.

All is forgiven.

whuups. i think you've misunderstood sir.
this is a real thing.
"Think of it as Evolution in Action"

this is the best possible repsonse

man i don't even
bri I have watched anime from you that was about a girl battling with mind controlled barbie dolls
Bubblegum Crisis is pretty cool
I like what I've seen of Outlaw Star too
The crowned monkey has a point!
I really like the AD Police better, though
I just don't understand why he feels that he should tell this story again. they did it right the first time and that was already in a medium with moving pictures
That one was OK too, once you realized that the dolls were just a plot device.

you know I'm just kiddin, it was pretty decent
the robot girl one, though, eeeeehhhhh
You mean Key? That one had some seriously disturbed characters in it.
Edit: On topic question.
Toph: Great blind girl or GREATEST blind girl?

Haha... a couple folks started it back in '08. The name's easy to remember and reminds us why we got started in the first place.

actually, make that the top thirty at least, i got tired of reading: http://boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?yr=2009&p=.htm
could this change? sure, but is a dude going to spend $100 million to find out whether THIS is the movie that makes the difference?
