New New Avengers

edited June 2007 in Graphic Violence
On February 7th, Brian Bendis and new series artist Leinil Francis Yu will reveal not only the post-Civil War status quo of the New Avengers with issue #27, they’ll also reveal a new team line-up, made of some returning members, some brand new ones, and at least one surprise readers won’t see coming.

But for you readers who can’t wait that long, Bendis and Marvel have agreed to reveal the team roster to Newsarama readers over the next week. Each weekday starting today and through next Friday, we’ll reveal one new team member a day – eight in all – along with Bendis’ thoughts on why he selected that character and what role he or she will be playing for the team. And then we’ll wrap things up with a talk about the foreseeable future of the whole [Avengers] assembled team.

We kick things off today with a look at the first member…

I dunno, hopefully we get some more backstory on this person. The arc we had didn't really give very many details.

Everyone should be reading it anyway, but Daredevil 9-15 will give you all of the Echo backstory you'll ever need. It's collected in the Daredevil: Parts of a Hole trade.

It's good to see her being used again, though!

As far as speculation goes... I think it would be cool if Daredevil actually joined the team, but I'm not going to hold my breath! He likes being a tease to poor Captain America. It also makes sense that Cap and Spider-Man would still be on it, too.

I'm not sure how I feel about [spoiler:1001502080]Echo[/spoiler:1001502080] being an Avenger.

As long as they have SOME sort of power and the strongest characters aren't Wolverine, Luke Cage, and Spidey. I mean, I get that's what the Mighty Avengers are for. But seriously, wouldn't it be smart to kind of hedge your bets and give them both some power houses?

Although maybe Mighty traded New She-Hulk for Wasp, because Jen fit the witty members of NA better.
That's a surefire way to get me to pick up your comic: Include She-Hulk or Ms. Marvel.
:| Looks I'm getting TWO Avengers titles.

I picked up the first and second trades with christmas money, and I really really really liked it (though sentry confused me until I got caught up about him). They did all sorts of things together in those two, did it change after that?

I just think it's kind of ridiculous that after 2+ years, I don't think there was a single story where the entire team which was presented in the initial covers/promotional images (Cap, Iron Man, Wolverine, Spidey, Sentry, Spider-Woman, Luke Cage, Ronin) actually came together to confront a threat.

The stories that Sentry/Ronin were in were more like guest appearances. It doesn't seem like very long before Civil War that they finally had their press conference to announce the new Avengers team.

Yeah I won't be too fond of it either - Bendis did say that you are either going to love it...or hate it. This little bit made me think it's him under there too
“Once Echo is done is Japan, there will be no need for her to be Ronin anymore. The suit – the identity – will have served its purpose. There will be another person in the Marvel Universe without a theme… without a motivation … or who may have lost their desire to wear the costume they were wearing, and this person will don the costume as the masterless samurai of the Marvel Universe for the time to come.”

There are a couple of people in the Marvel U that weren't pleased with the CW - I think that [spoiler:70feb02398]Captain America[/spoiler:70feb02398] lost a lot of motivation to be who he is but still wants to help people.

The general thought on Pro and Reg heroes falling into the Mighty and New teams seems to be quite straight-forward...

[spoiler:1a058c0ccd]...but it'd be interesting to see if some of those pardons Tony's scrounging up end up being used for the New team, abiet secretlly. In essence, keeping them as official rogue heroes while they're actually working undercover to find out the truth behind SHIELD. You know, like they meant to before Stamford occured.

And yeah, this kinda sounds like Justice League Elite, but it seems like a plausable secondary route to me.[/spoiler:1a058c0ccd]

Seriously though, Ronin is going to be a hand-to-hand fighter.

That pretty much leaves the following options:

    Captain America
    Winter Soldier
    Elektra

    Spider-Man
    Iron Fist
    Luke Cage
    Hawkeye

Are his fists made of arrows?

Also I thought Winter Soldier used a large rifle/machine gun, but I don't know much about him. Electra is gay, and Spider-man wouldn't change persona (and isn't there some deal about a new new costume, "back in black" or whatever?). Luke Cage is too big. It'd be like someone hiding behind a few leaves, feverishly hoping not to be seen. Iron Fist is supposed to get a brand new book after Civil War, and I doubt he'd be changing his persona with an "Iron Fist" title out.

Daredevil is "meh". I don't see it happening, but it might.

Doesn't it still really depend who wins Civil War, assuming one side "wins". Which team has SHIELD support, and which team has street support? I think Bendis could put together the most crap-tastic team ever and it would still rock, but I don't know about this Mighty Avengers idea. To be it sounds more like "Uncanny X-Men" and "New X-Men" - as if Civil War was an excuse to divide the team, and then the upcoming World War Hulk was an excuse to reunite the team.

He's not "powered", he hasn't shown up in any new material lately, and there was a very unnecessarily pointless focus on him in the latest New Avengers.

Hence, a set-up for a future reappearance. He's disguised as Ronin so Scarlet Witch doesnt' see him on TV and get all creepy-stalky.

Ack. Iron Fist's book is out now. Daredevil is currently one of the best books in Marvel's stable, i.e. he is not "meh.". Elektra is not gay (if by gay you mean in the "she's a crap character" sense). And, yes, Spider-man is going to be in his black costume (which might or might not be the symbiote).

Daredevil is meh in the sense that he won't be ronin. As in, I can't think of a reason for him not to be, other than the fact that it wouldn't make much sense. Iron Fist's book being out now only supports the argument, I'm sorry I didn't know it was out. And yes, Virginia, Elektra is a crap character. I mean, I don't like her- but then, I didn't like Raphael either.

Thats the original swordsman being referenced there, just to avoid confusion with the other ones.

Cap using a sword would be pretty odd wouldn't it? On the otherhand, using an out of character costume and weapon is a pretty good disguise.
