It's the sizzle that sells the steak, the potato chips that go with a nice sandwich, Steve Perry being a member of Journey: without a good cover a comic is oftentimes DOA or overlooked, even in this era of scans.
You've got all different categories of covers, from the iconic:
to the funny:
The T&A, sometimes done right, sometimes not:
To the ones that set up a plot twist inside:
to the ones that are just cool and you wish DC didn't alter the image when nothing was wrong with it to begin with:
And even in the current era where covers are akin to movie posters, especially at Marvel, a few gems break free of the forced mold:
So let us laugh, cry, nod our heads in agreement in how covers make prejudging so much easier, like so:

Let's Play Final Fantasy 'II' (Ch10 - 5/17/10)
I will say that this is better than most of the things Liefeld has done in the past... but looking at the other covers in the thread this is still crap. I mean the guy still cannot draw feet and the swords/guns are drawn so poor you'd probably be able to snap the handles like twigs.

They do let some more experimenting show up now, like that Nova cover posted earlier.
And some Incredible Hulk covers by Kaare Andrews, and of course James Jean Fables covers, with a Brian Bolland Jack of Fables homage:
You know, I had always assumed that was because they just didn't have enough established characters to spotlight. It was Spider-Man in various generic poses and then bam! Electro!
Its almost unfair to compare them.
My hammer! Mine!!

Still my all time favorite.
I always liked this Losers cover, for basically the opposite reasons the art was trying to convey (America will cure the world!)
And I like this cover just for the blurb by Kurt Busiek, as if Marvel was so desperate for people to give the book a chance after gutting it and replacing the real T-Bolts team that they had to ask Busiek to say something positive about it:
How is his optic blast not destroying her hands?
Steam: MightyPotatoKing
Her diamond form negates it.
and Jae Lee
Truest statement ever.
I enjoy the reprint covers of Punisher, especially this one:
Frank is going to sulk somewhere, leave him alone!
she's not in her diamond form
Maybe his eyes are shut? I'm pretty sure energy leaks out from his eyelids even when they are shut, like little PUNCH tears from the PUNCH dimension.
Bull.
Frank only does two things: 1) Murder bad guys, and 2) Prepare to murder bad guys.
