[Let's Play] TimeShift - Set 18 - End of Time
KlykaDO you have anySPARE BATTERIES?Registered Userregular
TimeShift is a sci-fi first-person shooter developed by Saber Interactive and published by Sierra Entertainment for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
The key feature of TimeShift is the player's ability to control time: slowing, stopping or even rewinding time more or less at will.
This allows a player to stop time to dodge an incoming projectile or steal an enemy's weapon. Specific time-related puzzles also require these abilities. The player must use them wisely to make its way through the game.
Hello everyone, welcome to my new Let's Play!
I have been itching to do an FPS again and what better way to get into that kind of game than with one that allows you to stop time and punch someone in the face?
This is also the first LP I am recording in HD, I hope everything will work out fine!
Again this is a blind run, I have not played the game before so if you expect some in-depth pro walkthrough you will be disappointed. However, if you just want to see a fun romp with some German accented comments on the side then it's just a jump to the left,a step to the right, put your hands on your hips, bring your knees in tight and let's do the TimeShift again!

Oooh, I remember this game. Didn't it have a different story during production? Like, you were a retired Air Force officer who was testing the suit and screwed up somehow?
Hmmm. So this is kinda like F.E.A.R 2 only the creepy little girl is your suits computer and not an murderous sociopath who is interested in you in any way, shape or form other than to give you information. Please tell me this is the case.
Anyway, fun first set. Now that you've got your crazy time powers maybe you'll be a bit more survivable, because damn did your health drop fast when someone was shooting you. Looking forward to seeing what levels of crazy this will descend to.

Anyway, great set Klyka.
Yeah, they completely redeveloped it. Everything was glowy neon in the original version. And you had a gun that shot bullets that were on fire (this is from the demo they released).
Also, the game is apparently impossible without the use of time powers.
Oh man, this game. This was just about the first game I played on my shiny new computer some months ago.
You can see inklings of a solid game in it, but its ability to completely rip-off Half-Life 2's story while not having any story whatsoever was hilarious. Still, stopping time, sticking exploding crossbow bolts into folks, then unfreezing time was rad.
Careful with your time-stopping, its pretty limited. Really limited. You'll get maybe 5 seconds out of stopping it and less out of reversing it, and reversing it is only ever useful for "puzzles".
Solid LP so far, really liked your previous LPs. Watching you LP Dark Sector made me buy it. For $20, it was a solid third person shooter, but the lack of German voice over was sorely missed in the final product.
Well, yeah. This game compared to... any FPS is pretty sad.
You play it, and end up liking it for what could have been. Gun play is extra weak, hit detection is pretty off, story quite literally doesn't exist (no, really, you'll see, its thinner than paper), time slowing abilities are very limited, game is super linear corridor crawling and the puzzles are weaker than the gun play. Its like a more modern Doom 3 in terms of lack lusterness (even being graphically nice but hollow).
But its still recommendable. I just don't know why, but it is. Something about crossbows that explode.
I guess it could be said of many LPers, but doesn't it bother you to play this game 15 minutes at a time?
I play for 15-20 min. Say "Have fun and bye bye" and then immediately start the new set and play for another 15-20min.
Ah yes. Going through your comments section on Youtube, I also see that your new update schedule has you playing two sets/chunks at a time and recording them separately. So it's more like a half hour at a time, which is probably much more satisfying.
Wow, barely half an hour into the game and we get a sewer level. They aren't wasting any time. Most games will wait a while to drop the obligatory sewer level on you.
And I don't like the shotgun. It looks... wimpy and feeble, especially after having seen F.E.A.R. and F.E.A.R. 2. It seems less like a shotgun of doom and more like a shotgun of fluffy tickles.
Anyway, so far, so good. There's death, destruction and a singing German. I'm enjoying this.
Its all about the later weapons in this game. They have the same weak feeling, but they're just awesome because they make everything go boom usually. Some pretty nifty alt-fires with 'em.
Klyka, you can actually save that resistance guy from the first video. Anytime you come across resistance guys being shoot or something, you can use your time powers to kill off their guards and they'll pick up a weapon and join in.
If you haven't already Klyka, this is TimeShifters, so you are obligated to throw a sticky grenade at someone, explode them, then rewind time so they recombine, and throw another grenade at them.
Trust me, I've played through this game before. You must do it, over and over again. Otherwise....paradox, or something!
And yeah, like the backup in HL2, the other resistance fighters are not terribly helpful.

I just like that he can freeze time, shotgun three people to death, and then synchronize the explosions.
Well, this is certainly a thing. I liked how you can stop time, blow guys up, and they don't explode until time resumes. But that would have to be a thing to witness. You see Timeshift guy walk up, and suddenly three people explode near where he was. And he's now about twenty feet away from that spot. Now if only the Rebels were slightly useful! (To themselves, even!)
Anyway, great to have the new LP and a daily updating schedule. And I -told you- that TimeShifting was the next logical step for your Innate German Bullet Time. :P
Yeah, aside from how by-the-numbers the game itself is, probably the biggest disappointment is how weakly it handles the time powers. Slow's been done a thousand times. Pause is neat and definitely the most fun of the three. And Reverse, due to the way they have it set up, isn't useful for Prince of Persia-style fixing of mistakes but instead is only good for "Hey, that was neat, let's watch it again!"
Plus the behavior of Reverse doesn't even stay consistent with itself, which makes a majority of the puzzles in this game little more than "You're at a puzzle! Use your time powers in the way we arranged this setpiece to work!" *use power* "Yay! You used your time power! You may now continue the game" rather than just giving the player powers, have stuff in the level do it's own thing, and let the player work it out.
As for the game though, does it keep up with the whole "run there, run that way, shoot this guy, look at big mecha"-routine? Some plot exposition would be nice. If not, Klyka could provide his own interpretation!:)

This is exactly my problem with this game, based on this LP. It's explained jack shit so far.
I always love how Klyka gets involved in his roles while LPing, so his own interpretation would be great.
I mean, there are objectives, but no reason for 'em beyond the obvious "well, no shit that'd hurt the war machine" stuff.
But crossbows! Crossbows that go boom and time-stopping!
Crossbows that go boom are good. I look forward to that.
I assume that it's the projectiles that go boom and not the actual crossbow, cause that would be a weird weapon. You'd have to go up to the enemy, give it to him and be all like, "you have to shoot me with this cause it's an awesome weapon dude," and he goes, "Hell yeah," pulls the trigger and it explodes in his face.
Damnit, now I want a game where I can give enemies sabotaged weapons and laugh as they blow themselves up.

That first railway station death took me a while to figure out how you died. I thought at first that your time power had run out and they just blasted you somehow. Wasn't until the second time when your computer spoke up that I twigged to what had really killed you.
I enjoyed this set... especially
that last ill-advised race against a heavy machine-gun.

Certainly faster-paced than Overlord 2, which had some real plodding moments.
Set 02 - Part 02
I am recording sets in advance and will try to post them daily/almost daily.
Enjoy!
Sadly it looks like Klash is right about the story, there's been no exposition whatsover.
Still, your commentary made it worth watching, so thanks for the set!

They're totally useless, though.

This game also seems like one of many that have an interesting premise, but poor execution.
Plus the behavior of Reverse doesn't even stay consistent with itself, which makes a majority of the puzzles in this game little more than "You're at a puzzle! It got me $5 off, and I consider myself blessed for that.
Worst game I ever played, and even caused me to create a thread about the worst games you own and hated.

edit: Oh man, you didn't try to melee the corpse into the electrified water. Shame.
double edit: The greatest game mechanic would be if you could friendly fire your allies and have to rewind time to save their lives.
