Steel Battalion - The Call

edited July 2010 in PAX Archive
Ye Olde OP
Ye with large black boxes--

We have the unique opportunity to do something that hasn't really been done in gaming yet. Well, hadn't been until East, but that's besides the point. I mean, 5v5 Steel Battalion? So passé. We want 20.

As you all know by now, XBL v1 is going down on the 15th. With it goes the opportunity to update new Xboxen to the Steel Battalion v1.1 code, and the ability to unlock all content. There are workarounds to this problem, but they are crappy to say the least.

What I am asking is this - your v1 Xbox has had a fantastic run. Retire it to our loving embrace, where we will keep it warm, fed, and pumping out steaming hot mecha action at least twice a year.

TL;DR - give us your xBox.

If you have a qualifying Xbox (functional, no mods, unbanned, all cables and cords), we want it. In fact, we want it so bad that we'll pay to have it shipped from wherever it is directly to our door before the 15th so we can upgrade its drive to what we need. Your reward is my undying gratitude, a good home for obsolete hardware, and free entrance to a Seattle local Freeplay event in the very near future.

Contact me via PM, or via maradine@gmail.com

If you also happen to have a SB rig you're willing to part with, you're an entirely different kind of hero, and I want you to PM me.

So - help us make the most ridiculously epic mecha simulation on the planet even more ridiculously epic.

M

Oh, hai. Been a few weeks. Perhaps you may not have heard, but through the generous donations of PA Forumers and PAX Enforcers, we have come across enough xbox hardware to power almost three Steel Battalion rooms. While our 2010 Seattle plans are not quite that epic (I've come to understand the rest of the show would like some place to set up), you can bet there will be 20 dedicated SB stations available at Prime.

20? Good lord, mara, whatever will you do with 20? An interesting question. Certainly, like in Boston, a set of 5 dedicated to new player boot camp. Perhaps 5 more for intermediate training and the midnight masters classes - these were a Saturday hit. But with the other 10, I bet we could pull off a PAX-long meta-campaign. That's right - giant robots AND meaningful consequences. And permadeath. And at least one more 9-on-1 Earthshaker vs. Vitzh match.

I'd like to repeat the phrase "PAX-long meta-campaign" again, because it makes the room go greyscale when I type it.

You can help make this happen. We need more Steel Battalion units and more copies of Line of Contact. Your donations will keep the game alive, make PAX that much more metal, and buff your gaming karma to the point where the admins start adding specialty mobiles, just for you.

Contact me via PM, or at maradine@gmail.com. Let's do this.

I've still got my giant X-shaped baby, and I'd be happy to give it away.

Only problem is the one controller I have for it is missing a jack. That a problem?

Shit, I wish I read this a few hours earlier while I was at my parent's house. I'll see what I can do - might be able to retrieve it this week. Do you want controllers as well, or just the box?

Box, cables, and a controller would be swell. :)

might be able to hurl one your way. plus, if it's easier, it sounds like you live in/near Seattle and I live on the eastside, so in that case, getting it to you before the 15th sounds like no problem

As much as I hate to see it go for sentimental reasons. It will do a greater good serving the people of PAX, than sitting boxed up in my closet to go unused forever. The Steel Batalion freeplay was one of the coolest things I got to do at PAX, and made me realize what a great game I missed out on. If others can experience it I'm all for it. I'll shoot you an e-mail tomorrow.

Proven fact, Khoo: Chicks dig giant robots.

I have an old Xbox somewhere, but no SB controller unfortunately... It fell victim to a little brother and a cup of root beer, its circuits forever scorched and stickied.

Damn little brothers. Youd think the communists would have put an end to them by now.

But, I have an Xbox I may be able to send your way.

I got one of those huge x-boxes, with cables but no controllers. Also, I am in Canada, on the east coast, which is disgusting. Let me know though if you still need it, as it sits and cries in the corner.

More than willing to part with mine. I used my xbox for about a semester in college, and it's collecting dust in a drawer. Not 100% sure on the cables, but PM me and let me know how you want to do the shipping. I'll have checked on the cables by then.

We do, indeed, have a metric fuckton of xboxen now. Thanks to everyone who donated! I'll be sending out shipping compensation shortly.

Our next task is less urgent but equally important - the acquisition of more Steel Battalion hardware. Tell your friends, spread the word, we want your giant robot sticks.

Yet another of those things at PAX I could spend the entire weekend doing and not feel like I've wasted my time. I've been wanting to play this game since it came out, and I've never had the chance. Hell, I'd pay extra on top of the PAX ticket to really get the chance to learn the game and go through a more extensive Steel Battalion boot camp.

Anyway, good luck finding the controllers. You'll be the first to know if I run across a set.

Will Xboxes/SB hardware that are donated to this cause also be making future appearances at PAX East?

Because I live in Boston and go to PAX East, but not Prime. I'd like to make sure this supports the one I go to.

I mean, I'm kind of assuming that the same set of stuff appears at both PAXes, just checking to make sure.

Unless something really strange happens (plastic-eating locusts, highway truck robbery, etc.), all units are available to all PAXen. Each show has different space constraints, of course, but as long as we have the room, we'll be rocking a good number of units at every show.

Allow me to join the vast hordes who have already expressed how they've wanted to play this game since before it even came out. Actually, let me go back even further... remember hearing about those awesome Battletech centers back in the 80s? Yeah. This is something I've been dreaming of since I was a child.

Meta-game with backstory? Full-on in-character LARP perhaps? I think I need to go lie down.

I think Maradine's got plenty of SB controllers and game copies now. On the private Enforcer forum some other Enforcers have been offering them, and the topic goes in hilarious directions about whether there are any rooms that haven't been taken over with Steel Battalion controllers.

I'm pretty confident Maradine's got enough to cover any space we could possibly fill with a Steel Battalion station, plus enough spares to cover surprise defects or damage. Even though the thread still says what it said a couple months ago.
