I like the points about #2 being more representative of future PAX. And since I did request the zooming in, I guess I'll vote for zoomed-in #2. :P
I think a compromise could be made with the text. Specifically, I think the best would be the first one with the "Seattle, Washington" removed since that is a little redundant with the convention center name already, and it would also make it less busy, which is the complaint people seem to have with it.
So "PAX Prime 2010" on top, and "Washington State Convention and Trade Center" on the bottom

That sounds excellent. I could go for that as well.

But this coin shouldn't be about the *future*, it should be about right now. It's a snapshot in time. The whole point of a challenge coin is to say, "You know that event that happened in the *past*, well, yeah, I was *there*, man."

I considered this. I only had that stupid long text on there because the picture would have been of the convention center. But since the convention center is no longer on the coin, there's no point to having the text on there. Makes more sense to have "Seattle, Washington".
I wasn't going to bring this up, but it sounded like the other translation you guys got was more accurate.
"mentula non es"? Say it now, because it hasn't been finalized yet.
If anyone has a better translation than what's on the coin right now, say so right now.

I actually agree with ky13 for once completely.
Hes nailed the exact point of a challenge coin.
I completely agree that it should be about right now. But the fact is that PAX 2010 will take place in 4 different locations. Only one of those (albeit the largest) is the convention center. There is nothing *future* about that. If anything, having just the convention center would be about the *past* (sidenote: what's up with the asterisks) since previous PAXes did only take place in the Convention Center.
With that being said, I think it would only be right to have "Seattle, Washington" on the perimeter and not "Washington State Conv......"

The "Washington" part is there specifically for symmetry. Trust me, it doesn't look as good when it only says "Seattle."
The fact of the matter is that we simply don't have any good, uncrowded photos of the WSCTC to put on the coin. I'll try to get a good picture of the glass overhang and the convention center itself with my 10mm lens this year for a PAX 2011 coin, but we just don't have a good photo that won't look like a mess. Understand that the design on the coin is 3D, and will not actually have any ink. The more complex a photo is, the more of a mess it will look like as a 3D impression on the coin.
I just got off the phone with Darrell at NWTM. We are go. The designs are about to be sent off to the CEO for a look-through, then sent off to the art guys. We are on our way.
Cost:
I spoke with Darrell again. The shipping for each coin will be different depending on where you live. He gave me the impression earlier that there was flat-rate shipping for coins, but it seems this is not the case. We're going to see if we can't negotiate a flat-rate so that everyone can just submit a flat amount. I'm hoping this won't amount to much of a hit for those who live closer, but understand that it will be impossible for me to keep track of shipping rates for everyone who orders one of these coins. A flat rate will simplify things immensely if we can negotiate one. But the fact remains that it hasn't worked out yet. So again, please stop putting money into the ChipIn for now. We're not solid yet on a final price for the coins themselves plus shipping.
That's all I can think to discuss for now. Rest assured that once a price is arrived at, I will update everyone here and we'll start ordering coins from NWMT for them to ship out once the die is finished and they start minting.
Are we intending these coins to be in hand before PAX and not handed out during the event?
That is the intention, yes. We are trying to get this done as quickly as possible so that the coins may be shipped to you before Prime.
Again on cost:
Just so you know: If we are unable to arrive at a flat shipping rate and the shipping rate for the person furthest away is only like a dollar more than those closest, here's what I propose we do:
There are a number of people in this thread who have expressed interest in a coin, but who live too far away (Australia for instance) or who do not have the money to order coins period. If a flat shipping rate cannot be arrived upon, I propose that I set a shipping rate that will cover everybody, and we'll all agree to pay that much for shipping. Whatever is left over will be used to order coins for those of greater financial need. Sound good?

Well not sure i think the AUS and other internationals will probably need to pick up coins at pax. I also like the thought of a flat rate as long as its not a per coin charge.

Yeah, like, some of us live in Seattle. If people are willing to save cost on shipping you can try to find somebody in the states to have it sent to and arrange to get them at PAX.
Just a suggestion, but I like what paprinny is saying about the extra cash.
Oh. By the way:
The Community DVD is planning to purchase a coin for both Wil Wheaton and Robert Khoo as gifts. You may do the same if you wish, but the gesture may turn out to be redundant.
(i.e., dibs, we called it, so nya)
Quick note: Darrell at NWTM is their residente Latin guy. He said "numquam mentula es" is about as close a translation as we're going to get to "don't be a dick". Looks like we made the right call.
Edit: I just remembered that I asked him what the deal was with the die, whether they would keep it or send it to me. They say they've got dies stored from more than 100 years ago. I think that means the former. Hopefully this means that anyone who goes to PAX Prime, but didn't see this thread, can order a coin as a memento after the fact, in which case we might place monthly orders.
I'm hoping that someone else here will volunteer to do that. I can't be spending too much, as I've been trying to keep costs down for myself lately. I just feel as though I owe more to Khoo and Wil than anyone else.
I'm happy to buy the extra coins for Mike and Jerry, I think I'll get them sent to my sister-in-law in NJ that we're visiting before I come to PAX.
Why not split it up? I was willing to chip in extra for those who donated to get some coins, but I can do this as well. You get one and I can get the other?
So again, please stop putting money into the ChipIn for now. We're not solid yet on a final price for the coins themselves plus shipping.
...but I want to give you money? I'm down for at least one, when the time comes.
Though I appreciate your wanting to give me money, it's not mine, and I'm not taking donations. I am not interested in making a cent of profit from this. On the other hand, if you would like to donate toward general "buy coins for other people" fund, go right ahead. Just email me at papaprinnyA@Tgmail.com noting your donation and how you would like it to be used.
FYI: Inocuo has offered to purchase coins for Mike and Jerry.
Inocuo, think you could present the coins to Mike and Jerry during one of their Q&As? The Community DVD will be filming those.
EDIT: Just so you folks know, I'm going to be on vacation starting Saturday through the 31st. Where I'm going there is very little internet connectivity. I will only attempt to get online to check my email and correspond with Darrell at NWTM. Don't worry if you don't see me around for a while. If something urgent somehow arises, ask Coldbrew to call me.
I see that paraprinny's on vacation, but I still don't get what's going on. I assume that since the design was chosen, the coins are going ahead? When are we going to order then?
So it turns out the wifi signal up here at EAA Airventure is better than I thought it would be.
The coins will be available for ordering once the die is made. I will post here once the die is finished, or some time before it is finished, if communication with NWTM is as good as I hope it will be. Orders will be placed once we arrive on a final price for both the coins and shipping per coin. To pay for a coin, you will place the amount in the ChipIn I set up for all this, the link for which can be found on page 10. I would have you give the money directly to NWTM, but they do not take orders from multiple people on a single die. It has to go through me, which I'm none too happy about, but whatever it takes to make it work.
None of this is new information. This is all previously iterated in the posts above. So from here on out, if I don't answer your posted question, it's because I'm busy/on vacation/your question has already been answered.
So we get stiff once in a while. So we have a little fun. What’s wrong with that? This is a free country, isn’t it? I can take my panda any place I want to. And if I wanna buy it a drink, that’s my business.
