Oh no! That gosh darn Red Star force is at it again. Come forth Atomic Tank! You're our only hope! Fight against the tyranny of...giant mechanized gorillas?
So Heavy Weapon just came out yesterday on XBLA and it's a blast. Don't be fooled by the simplicity of the first few levels on the demo as the difficulty goes up quickly; there are 19 missions and around mission 5, things start to get rather hectic. In addition to the mission mode (which allows you to save your progress), there is also a survival mode (which ramps up in difficulty much quicker than the mission mode), and a boss attack mode (unlocked when you beat the mission mode). The game also features up to 4 player simultaneous play locally or through Live which is apparently a ton of fun, but I haven't had a chance to try it personally.
So how does it play? Well, you move left and right along the ground dodging attacks while shooting with the other analog stick. Simple, but surprisingly fun and deep when the attacks start coming at furious speed from all directions.
You have two secondary weapons: nuke bombs (which give you an awesome mushroom cloud effect & annihilate everything in sight) and an uberpowerful lazer weapon that kills everything in a single hit for a short period of time and requires you to pick up 4 specific powerups in a stage. You can also get powerups like force fields and speed ups. However the star of the show is your regular attack. Not only can it be powered up, but you also eventually get 6 weapon add-ons (homing missiles, lazers, flak cannons, chain lightning, etc.) each of which has 3 levels. In Mission Mode, you get 1 point to enhance a weapon of your choice at the end of each level (and you can switch points as well if you don't like your initial selection) and in Survival mode, you pick the enhancements up as power-ups. So what's the big deal?
All of your weapon attachments have unlimited ammo and fire simultaneously!
Seriously, when you start getting going with a bunch of upgrades, the amount of destruction you deal out is deeply satisfying. Sometimes I feel like I'm playing Ikaruga or other classic shmup, but the difference being that instead of the little puny player ship that you normally play the game as, I'm controlling one of the bosses. And yet despite this, the game still manages to be very challenging.
Tons of firepower. 3 game modes. 4 player multiplayer. $10 price tag. Good clean graphics. Rapidly rising difficulty level. What are you waiting for? Defend us from Red Star as the next pilot of the Atomic Tank!

Seriously, though, this game is a ton of fun. I'll be on tonight after 5:00 PM EST if anyone wants to try the mission mode co-op with me.
In other wise, I wish someone would set me up the bomb.
That's Kommie Kong (that's his name in the PC version anyhow).
With a name that awesome, "big ape" just won't do.
shit

I bought Lost Planet on Tuesday and Heavy Gunner yesterday. I've played Heavy Gunner a lot more.
Anyone up for some Arms Race? I got up to 10:24 by myself and 9:06 with others. I want that 12-minute achievement.
War Party is good too...just remember to use nukes if you aren't good at targeting the atomic bombs that start dropping late in the run.

I'd be up for it tonight. I got to 10:35 in 4-player co-op on my first try (was the first thing I did) so we might be able to take it home. Send me a friend request.
OK, I will next time I log on...in a little bit. I'm trying to get past Mission 12. :-/
Hum.
That's the price on Popcap's site as well.
And XBLA continues its streak of win.
I swear, I spend almost as much time play arcade titles as I do actual games for the 360. They might not hold my interest as long, but for the price for the entertainment time they can't be beat.
Plus most arcade games can be played for short bursts if you only have a little bit of time.
I think I've cleared up to Kommie Kong so far (don't remember if thats its name in the xbox version) I need to get in on some multiplayer, I just missed the 8 minute mark solo on survial mode
I am a freaking nerd.
I think this is even better than Geometry Wars. It's amazingly good in my opinion.
I beat the single-player campaign. Missions 12 and 19 were really hard.
I'm #19 on the campaign leaderboards...woohoo!
Added.

Yes, I am almost certain that is the case. When you go to a non-live multiplayer game it gives four player slots and asks people to join in.
I didn't like it at all. It's a cheap clone of Area 88/UN Squadron without any of the finesse. Time to enforce stricter quality control on XBLA, IMO.
You played, what, one level? The demo?
To say you don't like it based on one level is, I suppose, fine. That's what a demo is for - to allow you to determine whether or not a game matches your tastes. But to make a comment that XBLA needs to enforce stricter quality control based on a single level is very obnoxious.
IMO.
*If you bought it and don't like it, disregard.
I'm not sure what the XBLA demo is like (as I don't have a 360), but if you go to Popcap, there is a free (single-level) online game and a free 60 minute demo.
The demo is the game's mission mode. I made it to some Transylvania-esque area, and the game gets a lot harder as you go.
I'm sure controls are different seeing as it's a mouse-only game on the PC, but the PC demo might give you a better feel for how frantic things can get in later levels.
Also, chain lightning is awesome.
I have no idea how the PC controls work, but I the way it works on the xbox. So much easier to control with the two sticks.

Just went for 11:51 in a coop survival game... sooooo cloooose.

If the controls were better or the price lower I'd grab it. As it is I can't dodge and aim at the same time, and shooting ground-level objects without running into them is tricky.
As far as I know, you can't reset your weapons on XBox. I'll check again, though. At least, if I can, I increased my score each time I played.
You definately can change your weapon selection on the xbox, just highlight a weapon and hit B to decrease its power to get points back into the base pool.

Oh, anyone have any idea why my xbox might not be recognizing a 2nd controller? When I turn the controller on, it does the normal blink deal, then it starts doing this long-short, long-short blink and never connects. Any advice?
