To be fair, the jogging pants are the only pants he owns and he is too embarrassed to take them back to the store because he didn't see the "JUICY" written across the ass.

Well see this is a good illustration of my point. The "nerd" stereotype often casts a person as someone who does not go outside, but here you are breaking that stereotype. So I don't really understand what you consider a nerd to be or why you insist on it being an inclusive group?

But isn't it human nature to gravitate toward like-minded people?

Would geek be a better choice of words then? I've been hanging around fellow gamers, roleplayers, anime fans, comic book fans, and other types of geeks for most of my life. I don't know a single one of the "staying alone in his dark basement" variety.

You give me the choice to hang out with a bunch of ex fratboys who talk about hockey and sportscars, or the guys I usually play Street Fighter IV with, of course I'll go for the Street Fighter guys.

My point is the world is not as black and white as you are making it out to be. It is not Nerds vs Jocks here. The people who like sportscars and hockey might also like D&D and Street Fighter. I'm someone who likes to play video games but I'm also into literature, philosophy, a wide range of music, fashion, science, soccer and various alcohols. People are not clear cut and I think it's inaccurate to pigeon-hole them into stereotypical groups based on a few of their interests.

The big thing to take from all this is:

Oh, also people tend to become far more complete and varied people when they get older, I find.

like, i'm not saying a lot of social outcasts in high school weren't dealt shitty hands in life

i've known a bunch, i've talked to these guys and gotten to know them, it's generally not their fault that they ended up in that situation.

often they've got health problems or psychological issues or they're poor or they got some other thing that's fucked their young life up and set them up with a shitty base to form a personal identity.

and that totally sucks for them.

but part of growing up is identifying those things and moving past them. if you couldn't do sports as a youth because of some personal issue, or just had no interest in sports for an unrelated reason, that's okay.

and the fact that people might've picked on you for that as a kid is totally unfair, i agree.

but grow up. move on. don't blame sports, or sports fans, because you got tormented as a kid by an asshole gym teacher or jerks your age.

It does seem that you believe certain interests predispose people to behave in certain ways, and we (or at least, I) am saying that it's not really true past a certain age. When you break about 22-23, you generally mature a ton and realize 'hey, there are lots of things out there that are cool beyond the things I used to like', not to mention that you tend to shy away from labels and attempted categorization.

Well the fact you tend to outgrow labels as you mature is true, of course.
I just like to raise my "I'm a gamer" shield when more mainstream people come at me making fun of the fact I'm still a gamer even though I'm an adult and everything.

Anyway. I guess I quickly painted myself as being too fanboyish. I'm not used to post on this board to be honest even though I've been lurking for years. I'll learn. :)

Like any kind of insular subculture, self-identified "GAMERS" and "NERDS" who make it a huge element of their personal identity are really quick to label everyone else and put them into categories.

    It's a teenager mentality. "I'm a _____ and you are a ______ and that makes us different."

honey, adults recognize things like nuance and variety in a person's interests and identity.

Well, people who make fun of you for playing games despite being an adult are assholes anyways. I'm an adult who plays games and it is as a direct result of my game-playing that I make a fairly comfortable living, particularly given my age.

I really want to see Kinect combined with traditional controls. I don't really want to steer via Kinect, but if I can use my pad or wheel in conjunction with Kinect letting me look into corners, that would be swell.

Similarly, in Mechwarrior it can also be used to look around, and maybe have some sort of overhead-mounted switches in the cockpit you could raise your hands to virtually flip.

slick, you're clearly struggling with this so i've bolded two important elements of what you are saying here

first of all, you're aware that you are using your personal identifier as a "gamer" as a shield to hide behind instead of confronting people. this is not healthy or mature behavior.

second, you use the term "more mainstream people". you are still thinking in an "us vs. them" mentality. people outside your approved paradigm are this nebulous "other" that you define as the "mainstream" that you clearly consider yourself not a part of.

what defines a "more mainstream" person to you, other than simply saiyng "Someone who isn't me"?

Well hopefully they'll leave it up to the devs. I think the "no controller" focus was mainly on the interface itself, which I agree with. Kinect XBE looked fantastic. As far as less casual games go, I think there will be leeway.

Well, people who make fun of you for playing games despite being an adult are assholes anyways. I'm an adult who plays games and it is as a direct result of my game-playing that I make a fairly comfortable living, particularly given my age.

Then in this case, 95% of my workplace are assholes then. And strangely, the remaining 5% happen to be :
    -A hardcore PC gamer
    -A yaoi fangirl
    -A roleplayer/larper
    -And one linux geek

Okay then. Yes, of course there's nuances, so I guess the whole "us VS them" model doesn't hold water at all here. So let me rephrase. I can divide the world into two categories. "People I like to hang aound" and "people I have absolutely no affinities with."
