First things first, I have taken a very long hiatus from these forums (probably has been 5-6 years now), as I have slowly phased out of the gaming in general due to IRL circumstances. But now that I can finally afford myself some leisure time, I am back! So hello again everybody of G&T!
So anyways, I have tried to keep up with the gaming scene even during the past 5-6 years, but not with much enthusiasm or the motivation. As of today, I do own a Xbox360 that I've received as a present from a while back with several games and couple PC games that I had played whenever I had little bits of spare time. (Mostly WoW, sinking in an hour or two a day for good 2 years now) Now, my fiancee bought me a Playstation 3 and I was heavily overwhelmed by the huge catalog of games for the PS3. So I come to you today for recommendations for my new PS3!
Games that I have played and did like (very short list, but I'm willing to try out new stuff too):
- Old Final Fantasies.
- Grand Theft Auto 4
- The yearly sports games (mainly NFL and NBA)
- World of Warcraft like I mentioned earlier
Games I am very interested in so far for PS3:
- Valkyria Chronicles
- Heavy Rain

Resistance was a fun FPS. I don't play much FPS games, though, so I don't know how it stands up to other games.
Uncharted is really good. Long enough to be satisfying without dragging at any point and enough variety of platforming and shooting and a little bit of puzzles to keep things interesting.
MGS4 is also up there, a little long winded for the cutscenes, but the boss fights were epic.
I haven't gotten into Infamous, Resistance 2, or Killzone 2, but they're supposed to be pretty awesome too.
If you're looking at PSN games, Siren is a very good survival horror by the same team that made the original Silent Hill (I believe), and Wipeout HD is like adrenalin distilled into videogame form.
These suggestions all sound awesome guys. Thank you all and keep them coming!
Also, if you ever want to re explore the PS1 Final fantasies again, they have them up on the PSN store.
Assassin's Creed 2
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Burnout Paradise
Dead Space
Demon's Souls
God of War Collection
God of War 3
Heavy Rain
inFamous
Mirror's Edge
Prince of Persia (the 2008 one, not Forgotten Sands)
Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time
Red Dead Redemption
Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Valkyria Chronicles
Yakuza 3
There are others like LBP and KZ2 that I'd recommend but at this point, waiting for the sequels would be a better idea.
Oh and on the PSN there's:
Bionic Commando Rearmed
Critter Crunch
Flower
Joe Danger
Lumines Supernova
Pixeljunk Eden (plus the Encore expansion)
Pixeljunk Monsters (plus the Encore expansion)
Pixeljunk Shooter
Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty (short game between ToD and ACiT)
Shatter
Super Stardust HD
Trine
Wipeout HD
This. And I never thought I'd say this, but this. When inFamous was announced I thought it would be bunk, when it was released I was in Prototype's corner - I only got it 'cause it looked decent, and came with an invite to the Uncharted 2 beta - and now, I must admit, it's my single favorite game on the PS3 and one of my favorite games of all time.
Also,
-Valkyria Chronicles
-Uncharted 2
-Demon's Souls
-Siren: Blood Curse
-God of War III
In that order. If you have a 360, it's likely silly of me to suggest multiplatform titles, but the best games of 2010 so far:
-Bayonetta (get this on 360)
-Darksiders (get this on PS3)
-Resonance of Fate
Also, if you haven't tried it I currently feel BioShock 2 is the best game of 2010 thus far - that said, it's a personal preference, and I haven't played Mass Effect 2.
As for Heavy Rain...? Spoiler'd for size:
It's very flawed, and very ambitious.
And, just to be exhaustive, here's a list of every ownable/exceptional PS3 exclusive I can endorse.
Welcome to the fold.
You're living in Bizarro World
Demons' souls
Bayonetta
Did I mention Valkyria Chronicles already? Yes? Thats OK because Valkryia Chronicles is so awesome it can appear more times in a list than Chuck Norris and get away with it. And it would bring cake.
Never!
(Get the 360 version.)
Simple. Forgotten Sands was a blatant attempt at a last gen callback just to tie into the films release (yet still failed), while PoP 08 was a fresh and interesting new direction for the franchise.
:^:
That link is amazingly helpful, as was the slashlink(sp?) that was posted earlier. Thank you guys so much. And yes, I do own a 360. Sorry if this goes a little off-topic, but does anybody have a similar link like the ones above, except listing all of the 360 exclusives? I really do want to start building my 360 catalog as well.
Googling up all these PS3 suggestions is consuming my entire night :!: But so far, I'm 100% sure I will be going out tomorrow to buy Valkyria Chronicles and Infamous, as it seems like these games come highly recommended. Thanks again guys, and keep them coming!
Remember, you can always download demos off the PS Store. Though some of the games mentioned don't have demos (like AC2, Demon's Souls and Uncharted 2) while others just have bad demos (inFamous and Siren come to mind).
No, I'm pretty sure 'downward into the toilet' just describes your taste.
Edit: Oh and Tenex, if you want the slashsignal for the 360, just go to the page and look on the left. There's a list of recommended games for all the current platforms.
If you're unfamiliar with Limbo, do a search on the forum here and watch the trailer in the thread's OP.
It's so freakish that the games that make me want to buy Microsoft's system are always fifteen dollar downloadable titles.
Also, I've heard mostly positive things about Alan Wake, and the 360 has some exclusive JRPGs. In terms of critical reaction though, Demon's Souls and Valkyria Chronicles are the highest-rated JRPGs on the HD consoles. And yes, I know they're an ARPG and an SRPG, but they're also from J. JRPGs.
I've always wanted to try Tales of Vesperia, though. It was just so pretty.
Yeah the demo for Siren sucked balls. It serves one purpose, though - beyond art direction, Siren ain't a great-looking game. So play the demo and ask yourself if you could love a brilliant survival horror game that looks like that - but know that demo doesn't begin to display what makes Siren incredible.
I didn't mind the inFamous demo, though. I musta' put more than a few hours into it.
The all-time time-consuming demo was definitely Valkyria Chronicles, though.
Well, no - the all-time champ is Doom: Knee Deep in the Dead, but I think I'm getting off topic.

Will put in Uncharted tomorrow, and I'm sure that will be amazing from what my friends tell me about it.
I played the Sands of Time trilogy and found PoP 08 far more interesting. The thing about the SoT gameplay was that you'd be stopping and starting all the time, since you usually had to figure out what you had to do before going ahead and doing it. PoP 08, on the other hand, was a lot more fluid. The controls were simplified down to a point where you didn't really need to worry about figuring out what to do, you could just fly by the seat of your pants as you pulled off all the moves. It wasn't "casual" and it didn't "play itself", it was just a different type of game, you condescending silly goose.
There are only a couple of complaints I'll accept about PoP 08. The button timing was a bit too lenient and the ending, while interesting, pushed you a bit too hard in a certain direction (I won't say anything more than that because of the spoilers). Oh and the Epilogue DLC was a bloody ripoff.
The first Uncharted is good, I'd definitely recommend that before the second, but the second does upgrade in about every way possible.
I was sort of in the same boat as you; I hadn't played that much console stuff in a long time, but I did have a Wii for a while. But when you compare the graphical capability of the Wii to the shit you'll see in Uncharted 2, it'll blow your mind. And it's not just graphics, the gameplay of it is phenomenal. It's a game I have no intention of selling because I can see going back and replaying it over and over.
Other than that, I'd recommend these:
Modern Warfare 2 - If you like FPS, there's nothing better on PS3. Yes there are glitches, yes people bitch and moan about all the imbalance, but the sheer fun factor of this game can't be denied.
Demon Souls - Pretty brutal game in terms of difficulty, but also one of the most rewarding. I loved every minute.
Red Dead Redemption - GTA in the Wild West. So much fun.

Get POPTFS if you think it's more important for a game to be good.
First, you have a ridiculously huge area you can explore. The playable fits snugly into a 35km x 35km square. The setting is a series of islands, mostly tropical jungles and forests, but there are two huge snowy mountains, a large desert region, and a large city. There are ~350 different cities, villages, airports, and military installations to find.
Secondly, you have your parachute/grapple combo. Infinite parachutes are for gliding around the island, which you can combine with your grappling hook for speedy travel. You can also use the grapple for climbing buildings and mountains, tugging enemies off ledges to their deaths, dragging people and objects with your vehicles, hijacking helicopters, jumping between moving vehicles, and other crazy things.
And with all open world games, you get vehicles, ranging from motorcycles to passenger jets.
The plot is B-movie stuff that gets ridiculous by the end. Your overall mission is to cause chaos by destabilizing the government and destroying every structure of theirs you can, all color-coded red for your convenience. Pipelines, large cranes, smokestacks, gas tanks, radio masts, and more. Each settlement has a % of pickups and destroyable objects, so you'll know when you done everything you can at a certain place.
It is, perhaps, the most impressive game I've played in a long time, and certainly is a lot of fun. The PC version is probably the best of the bunch, since it allows mods, and then the PS3 version, since it has youtube support.
Dead Space is the only current-gen games I've finished more than twice, which is a feat on a mythical scale.
Prototype is a great open-world game where you get to romp around Manhattan Island and kill everything in sight. I started playing a new game+ yesterday and it's just as fun as it was the first time I put it in.
As for exclusives, you can't really go wrong with Demon's Souls unless you get frustrated by being killed over and over again, which is kind of the point of the game. I loaned it to a friend and got it back within a few days for that reason. Otherwise it's excellent.
Disgaea 3 is good too, but I have more fun with the Disgaea games on my PSP for some reason. They just lend themselves better to portability than other games for some reason.
Other than that I have to keep the Uncharted 1 & 2 train going. Those 2 were beyond excellent.
Since you like the early FFs if you're part of the gamers club on the Best Buy Reward zone I think you can get FF13 for 20 bucks this week (it's on sale for 40, but the gamers club gets a 20 dollar gift certificate), so that's really worth it.
Infamous and LittleBigPlanet gave me a lot of fun, LBP moreso if you have a girlfriend or fiance that likes to game a bit and can co op it with you.
Killzone 2 was really awesome, both single player and multiplayer for me, and I still think the visuals are pretty mindblowing.
I also have to recommend Heavenly Sword. No one else seems to recommend it, because it got a lot of backlash for being short, but you should be able to find it for 15 to 20 bucks now so shortness isn't a downfall anymore. I really had a ton of fun with the game even at my 60 dollars.

Well, Demon Souls doesn't cheat, but the enemies are pretty brutal and will punish you for not anticipating their attacks. There are also some weirdly placed enemies that you are just supposed to not try fighting till later. It's a lot of fun, but the learning curve is steep. It's not a popular opinion but I was kinda meh on Valkyria, definitely worth a single play-through, and it was lots of fun, but I didn't really have much interest in going back and re-doing all the skirmishes to A-rank them or whatever. Worth a rent IMO.
I've really enjoyed Resonance of Fate, it's a super solid JRPG with a pretty interesting battle system. The characters are pretty hilarious, the weapon customization is both awesome and absolutely ridiculous. It's also quite long, I'm fairly sure I'm only about 2/3rds or 3/4ths through the game and I've got about as much time logged in it as I did on ff13 (which I finished but didn't do the last few side-missions).
Heavy Rain gets a big :^:, it's just one of those games that you really need to play, even if it seems like a glorified string of Quick-Time Events.
I liked FF13 once most of the characters stopped being terrible, which does happen surprisingly enough. I feel there were a lot of things about the battle system that are clunky and most of the fights are either trivially simple or painfully frustrating. It also gives you some cool wallpaper for your ps3 upon getting some achievements! :^:

Demon's Souls is hard in neither of those ways. It is always balanced, always fair - but it will punish you mercilessly for your lack of knowledge of its world, enemies and ways.
Hang on, I put this better once...
If you don't like frustrating games, don't play it
The only game I've ever returned
You can edit stuff like that out if you like. I got rid of it because you're right, it looks like only the sequel made it to the PS3, but the Slash Signal is setup so that anyone can edit it.
