The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Charlton "Charlie" Brooker (born 3 March 1971) is a British journalist, comic writer and broadcaster. His style of humour is savage and profane, with surreal elements and a consistent satirical pessimism. He presents TV shows Screenwipe, Gameswipe and Newswipe, writes review columns for The Guardian newspaper, and is one of four creative directors of comedy production company Zeppotron. His five-part horror drama Dead Set for E4 earned him a nomination for a BAFTA and he is also the host of the Channel 4 comedy panel show You Have Been Watching. Brooker won Columnist of the Year at the 2009 British Press Awards for his column, and the Best Newcomer at the British Comedy Awards 2009.
Newswipe with Charlie Brooker is a British news review programme broadcast on BBC Four written and presented by Charlie Brooker. It is similar to Brooker's Screenwipe series which is also shown on BBC Four. A first series of six episodes ran between 25 March 2009 and 29 April 2009. A second series began on 19 January 2010, on BBC4, concluding on 23 February 2010.
The aim of Newswipe is to expose the inner workings of news media, just as Screenwipe does to television in general.
The series is a comic, thoughtful and acerbic analysis of recent news coverage. Newswipe also looks at the way the news is presented to the public. Experts are on hand to pick apart certain stories and analyse the news media's obsessions.
I didn't even need to press play on the first clip, that matrix line still made me laugh and will continue to do so every time I hear it (or imagine I am hearing it).
Also, yeah this show is awesome, Charlie Brooker in general is but I enjoy Newswipe the most. Any idea when a new series is coming? Series 2 was earlier this year so maybe not till the end of 2010, though I had heard he was considering doing a full series of Gameswipe after that special/pilot.
edit: So hard not to love this show, even the soundtrack is fantastic.
Uh oh, that forty miles of Irish Sea won't keep me safe.
Maybe I can sell my story to the media, and they'll whip it up into a frenzy about how the internet encourages violence, so long after my just rewards for the sin of false hope has been dished out, Charlie Brooker will have some material to work with.
He had a call for extras on his Twitter the other week so they're certainly filming a new series, probably will air in September like the other News/Games/Screenwipes.
I remember putting down "Screenwipe" on my list of programs to watch at some point and it's good to know Charlie Brooker is still kicking and making good programming.
This show is great but horribly painful to watch. Goddamn the media is terrible alot of the time.
So this is a pretty bloody great show. If you, like I, have somehow let this run under your radar and didn't get the hint from the above videos - you can catch up on the entire series on xthemusic's YouTube channel.
He also did Gameswipe, with some pretty stellar guests (Dara O' Briain, Graham Linehan).
But yeah screw you for making me think there was a new series.
That bit Dara O' Briain does is just a part of his stand up and it's fucking hilarious. It ends with him crouchwalking around the stage making fun of Metal Gear Solid and it is the best thing.
Also, Charlie Brooker needs to more Screenwipe and Newswipe, it's been way too long. You Have Been Watching just doesn't compare really.
Hey, I thought I'd revive this thread to draw attention to two Brookeresque things happening soon.
First, Ten O'Clock Live, a co-operative effort with Jimmy Carr, Lauren Laverne and David Mitchell on Channel 4, starting in the next 35 minutes. An hour long comedy show based around current affairs. Looking forward to it, because I need more satire to fill the void in my soul.
Second is How TV Ruined Your Life, a BBC 2 program which explores the influence television has had on different aspects of us humans, starting on Tuesday (25th of January). Looking forward to that as well.
So enjoy the Time of Brooker!
EDIT: Updated the thread title so we can talk about his other stuff.

Stupid boiler repair guy managed to somehow break an essential tv splitter box and now we will not get terrestrial tv till tomorrow. Looking at the 4OD website it seems that they do not simulcast, but will upload later. So I guess I'll watch this tomorrow

Yes, that disappointed me, because now I have to choose between leaving the warmth of my room to watch it or watching it tomorrow. Dilemma!

Sucks to be us. Well, more in my case as I don't get to have warm showers. Austerity Britain is starting to suck!
That 10 O' clock live thing was terrible and disastrous. It was also entirely misleading, as the adverts promoted it as some sort of news sketch show poking fun at other news groups, or even a show something akin to Drop the Dead Donkey (yes i'm old).
Instead we got a comedy show that wasn't funny, AT ALL! Even Charlie Brooker couldn't improve it.
Thank you C4 for making me continue to not want to watch your channel.
It wasn't terrible and disastrous by any means. Bits were certainly iffy but bits were pretty good. Brooker talking about the media reaction to Tunisia and Mitchell ranting about local news were great, and I appreciated a couple of Carr's lines (the one about the Catholic church and the Pope was brilliant).
They certainly didn't promote it as if it were a sitcom like DTDD, and the emphasis in previews was on looking at the news, rather than a show about other news shows.
It just felt a bit weak and scattered really. With an hour (admittedly more like 40 mins) you'd think they'd have time to focus either on 1) a series of well-developed comedy sketches, or 2) moderately in-depth discussion led by people who are both bright and funny. But no - you have to split it up between 4 different presenters, and there has to be just as much half-baked one-liners and topical references crowbarred into 50s-style gags.
That said, I still preferred it to the fictional live news satire show in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.
EDIT: To clarify further, I think they did do a good job of bringing each host's particular comedy style to the fore, but in doing so actually destroyed the comedy itself. Jimmy Carr works as a cruel series of painstakingly-crafted put-downs. Brooker in a manically-paced world of editing and rhetoric. Mitchell is probably best suited to this kind of thing, but because time was so limited the interviews were boiled down to "state your point, counterargument, bye". Laverne was...whatever she does.

What did Lauren Laverne do? Was she even on this show?
I didn't end up watching this, I was busy.
I briefly flicked on to when Webb was interviewing someone about tuition fees, but I wasn't impressed mainly because it seemed as though it was the same old arguments I've heard before, and also because I think Webb is a bit inexperienced and thus kinda got played.
I then flicked off, because I was going to go to bed, and the subject matter was only going to wind me up.
If you're telling me that was one of the iffy bits, and that I should try catch a repeat (all very reasonable) then I'm all for that.
I thought that 10 O'Clock Live was pretty good overall, with Lauren Laverne's section and Jimmy Carr's part about Tunisia being pretty weak. It might be better to have a roundtable discussing noteworthy stories in the week leading up to the programme at the beginning, broken up with Brooker's pre-done part, Mitchell's rant and Carr's interview. I think Lauren Laverne is going to catch a lot of flak for this, but for actual presenting she was good, just not the comedy because she's always going to be outdone by the professionals.
I think that if you were expecting Newsnight, but with Paxman being replaced with a Brooker-Carr-Mitchell hydra, you'd be disappointed, because it's always going to be lightweight compared to the alternatives at the same time, like Newsnight and Question Time.
A decent stab at a first episode, it really just needs some time to find its feet.
I think it just needs to concentrate on the rants, interviews, and discussion sections, and leave out the sketches. Laverne works fine as a glue holding the others together, but please don't let her try and be funny or act.
Mitchell's local TV soapbox-esque rant was quite wonderful though.
It was entertaining enough for me to watch again, but it was a bit weak.
I think Laverne's role is to be the host who links it all together, almost the straight man presenter to the three wits
Reviving the thread again to remind you all of How TV Ruined Your Life, a Brooker-Solo endeavour starting tonight at 10pm on BBC 2. The first episode looks at fear.

I definately enjoyed this. It's obviously less edgy than -wipe, what with being on a main channel, but it's cut from the same cloth, and for some reason, the

Yeah, that was awesome. Also, timely, since I've basically stopped watching television for anything besides Doctor Who and the Venture Brothers anyway.

His panel quiz show thing You Have Been Watching is also quite good, though not quite a standard panel show.

I'm helping!
Love the show though, especially the episode where he analysed the anatomy of a news report

Oh this just looks excellent. A quick preview clip.
After seeing such awesome shows as 'If the World Stopped Turning' and its ilk this clip tickled me pink!
