If it's anything like the iPad 2 one, no. It doesn't cover the back, and it's actually kind of annoying. I'd spend the 40 clams on a better wrap around body fitting case. I had a smart cover for my 2 and regret it. I dumped it for a full wrap around case that has a built in stand and haven't looked back.

Did they confirm yet if the iPad 2 smart cover will be compatible?

I talked to my buddy, and he's considering buying my iPad 2 for $600. That's only $100 out of pocket from me for the 64GB WiFi version.

Unless you this 4G Lite whatever is a huge step up from 3G, I have no need for it, just as I had no need for 3G on the iPad 2 (I only got that model because it was all they had).

If I'm getting this, it'll most likely be through Best Buy. Any word when they'll take pre-orders?

I'm getting a 27 hour quote to download the new iPhone software update. Not sure why seeing as the new iTunes only took me a minute or two to download.

EDIT: Tried again a few hours later. Normal speeds. Wheeee.

I guess if you like the back of your iPad all kinds of scratched to shit from your finger nails, rings, setting it on the counter, whatever, sure, the smart cover is great. The full case I have mine in isn't even that bulky, it's a tight fitting case. It's not some big folio monstrosity.

The brushed metal on iPads scratches STUPID easy. Thanks to my case, mine is completely blemish free. I like it that way personally.

Well, I ended up pre-ordering the 64GB WiFi only model through Apple's store. At the recommendation of SA, I went with Bill Me Later, since Apple's no finance card didn't approve me right away.

It says my order is processing and that I should get confirmation soon. Wonder how long it'll take them to send me the email?

Double-checked with my buddy, and he's onboard to buy my 64GB 3G iPad 2 for $600.

Hope this New iPad is as awesome as it sounds. Are there screenshots or videos of the supposed 4x resolution available?

I guess conveying the high resolution of the screen is a bit tricky since any photos or screenshots of it will almost have to be shown on lower resolution screens.

Someone recommend me some covers so I can decide.

I am assuming this will be the same dimensions as the older iPads.

Well, it's slightly thicker than the iPad 2 and still slightly thinner than the original iPad. Other dimensions are pretty much the same. I'm a bit curious about cases too though, as I just ordered the new tonight and didn't get the smart cover.

So I just ordered one of these.

First iDevice I've ever ordered for personal use.

    Pretty excited!

The financing options were horrific though!

Not sure I really needed the 4G, but I use internets on my mobile out of the house ALL THE TIME.

I ordered the 64GB WiFi only model through Apple's store. Used Bill Me Later, which was the most recommended option.

But now I'm worried that I may have affected the re-sell value of the device by personalizing it. It sounded cool at first, engraving my name and a choice quote on it. But then I soon realized that not many people would probably not want to buy an iPad with someone else's name on it.

It's too late to change the order according to customer service...it's packaged and ready to go, and I may even get it a day or two early.

They did say I could easily exchange it at the store and get a non-engraved version, but I'm also remaining steadfast not to do an exchange if the device is perfect out of the box; I tend to be unlucky with new devices, usually exchanging them once or twice (had to exchange the Vita twice for different issues). If I can't find anything wrong with the engraved iPad, I'll probably keep it and worry about re-selling it down the road.

It's going to be a long week.

Do you have to do something special to get rss feeds to play nice with readability, or is the app just incompatible with convenient auto updating?

Edit: Also, while this may vary from workplace to workplace, does anyone have any experience with getting an iPhone as a workphone? I may (or may not) be getting one soon, and I was wondering if I'll be able to transfer apps that I've purchased from my iPad to it, and more generally if it's considered ok to have games and random entertainment stuff that is not porn on a workphone.

Bad news, but not too surprising: my friend reneged on wanting to buy the iPad 2 from me. Said that he was going to get it for his dad's birthday, but it turned out someone's getting him the New iPad instead.

On the upside, my other friend said he's "super interested" in buying it for the same price I offered, but that he'd let me know tomorrow whether he'll go through it or not.

In case he backs out too, what would you say my best chances are in getting the best possible value from the iPad? Currently eBay has a heap on sale around the $530-$550 range, but I feel that $600 is a realistic figure, as mine is guaranteed flawless (exchanged it a couple months ago).

That will depend entirely on your place of work. Are they buying the phone, or are you and planning to use it as your work phone? I do the latter, and it's my phone and I can do with it what I like, my employer just pays the bills and I connect to our Exchange environment.

That said, it has its shortcomings as a business device. It's getting better (you can FINALLY flag messages in IOS 5, for example), but there are still a lot of little issues.

can you feel the struggle within?

They'd be supplying it. And yeah, it seems like a strange choice for work, but part of the job would entail helping people learn to use iPads, so I guess they want the person in my position familiar with iOS.

Of course, I don't have the job yet and may be getting ahead of myself, I basically just want to get Chrono Trigger but can't justify getting it right now without iPad support or an iPhone, heh.

I ultimately went with a 16gb for THE NEW IPAD (seriously, what were they thinking with that).

Got my name engraved on it which, in retrospective, will hurt any resale I may want to do. But I guess there might be ways to buff that off.

Not that I care, as I don't intend to upgrade next year anyhow.

It's also pristine to the point that you couldn't tell it was used, and comes with the original packaging. What's a reasonable price for you?

Like I said, $550 is the lowest I'm willing to go. I might just put it up on eBay for that amount. Problem is I don't want to part with it until I've received the New iPad, just in case.

    It is the new "iPad"

I generally avoid Cragslist like the plague, but I guess I could try charging my $600 rate and have them meet at the Starbucks near my place, or some other public locale.

In any event, I put it up on eBay for $550: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120873528595

If a PA member's personal guarantee on the quality of the product has any bearing for you, perhaps you may consider giving my item a look.

I'm just waiting for if/when Best Buy will take pre-orders on the New iPad. I've decided that if they do, I'll pre-order through them and return the Apple order.

Not just because of getting a model that isn't engraved, but because it's more convenient to have both of my current no finance orders under the same card (the other is the Vita). Plus the local BB is closer and I've had a history of good service with them.

Is it difficult/possible to uncouple a credit card from your itunes account? My husband surprised me this evening with a preorder for one of the new ipads and we were both assuming our kids would want to play with it too (to the extent I'll let them). I have heard you can put some kind of password on it but I have also heard that apps can bypass that. I don't know if it was an android app or an ios app where my friend's son accidentally spent money they wouldn't give back, but I figure better to be safe than sorry. At least if I only have prepaid cards on there there'd be a much smaller limit to what they could waste.

This will be weird. I mean, I'm excited. But actually other than an ipod nano I owned a long time ago and haven't really used in a couple of years I've never had an apple device before. I'm not very good at getting gifts either, I guess. I keep wondering if I should ask him to cancel it.

It is ridiculously easy to change your credit card via iTunes.

EDIT: If you are worried about your kids charging up stuff on the iPad, then I suggest changing your iTunes password. I'm not really up-to-speed on parental controls, but that should be one way to stop them.

If you recently bought something, or downloaded something via ithe app store, ie. you just entered your password you don't need to reenter your password for like ten minutes or something.

That is where the hole lies.

I'm sorry, I didn't actually mean changing my card (though I guess that's a possibility too) I meant to not have a credit card on there at all and just use those iTunes cards you can buy at the store to purchase things. Though I guess I can just get a prepaid debit card, though I thought I'd heard those things are just riddled with fees.

edit: You know, I just checked my itunes account (I've been purchasing music with Amazon more lately and I haven't used it in a while) and it already says I don't have a credit card on file. I guess if your new ipad doesn't demand a card during setup my work is already done.

I've got a friend of a friend who says he's all set to buy my iPad 2 at the price I advertised, cash and all. I have to leave it with my buddy tonight so he can show it to his buddy on Monday.

So long story short, what's the easiest step-by-step procedure to:

    1. Erase all my data/contact info on the iPad 2

    2. Restore all my data/contact info on the New iPad, once acquired?

I'm sure it's self explanatory, I just want to make sure I don't leave out/lose any info.

Edit: Also, being as anal as I am, I decided to order a second iPad through Apple. This one is a black model with no engraving.

I double checked with them over the phone, and they allow returns on engraved iPads, even if opened. By doing this, I can decide between the black and white (recent articles I've read suggest the white might be too distracting for media), and I'll also have two iPads to inspect in the event one of them has dead pixels or light leakage or other issues.

Only problem is the new order means I won't get it until the 21st, but since I can play with the one on the 16th with no repercussions, it shouldn't matter much.

Dunno. I had one during my first iPad exchange, so maybe I'm just unlucky.

At least with two iPads the odds should be good that one of them is perfect. Hopefully it's the non-engraved one, but I'm not going to stress anymore about it. Right now I'm just hoping I sell off my iPad 2 before they arrive.

Isn't that what Apple usually does? I know some occasionally get delivered early, but that always seemed to be the (very rare) exception.

I got a shipping confirmation on the 7th...for my smart cover. Which is being delivered tomorrow, apparently. No shipping confirmation e-mail on the iPad itself, but I'm confident it'll be here on the 16th. Would be cool to have the peace of mind in knowing that it's officially on the way, though.
