Also, I'm really unhappy to mention this, but thus far both Dark cards that have been played on Raymond have the Haunted keyword (I just checked my physical copies); I should have two more bad baggage. Do the cards in Hand Tracker not have the keywords on them?
That one says Haunted by the Past
Also, nothing from me.
Not all of the Haunted by the Past cards say Haunted on them-which I believe is what his plot card is referring to
and nothing new from me-already played my one dark card on you
I'll add them in as key words where appropriate.
This may be answered based on his turn or give him an idea, does sacrificing evidence count as following up a lead? I figured it probably wouldn't but wasn't sure.
Well, except maybe Floyd, who always gets to choose how his first branch resolves.
It looks like I'm good to go on my turn, so give me a minute to see if I understand how to use Hand Tracker and I'll get the last actions of Day 2 in officially.
Just when I think things can't get any worse, my phone rings.
"Heya, Ray."
Kate. Wonderful. Just what I need right now, like another hole in my head.
"Whaddaya want, K?"
"I just wanted to talk. Could you meet me at Broadcast Square?"
"Talk to you? In public? You ok?"
"Yes or no, Ray?"
"Sure, why not. I wasn't planning on doing much today anyway."
"Thanks. I'll make it worth your while." *click*
I bet.
I get in my car and fly over to the Square. God, this place is noisy. How the hell am I supposed to get rid of these ghosts when I can't even think straight? Still, the dancing light show is soothing in a way. I see Kate standing over in front of a store window checking out some jewelry. That's never a good sign, but it's too late to back out now as she catches my reflection in the glass and waves me over.
"So what's up, K?"
"Heard you've got a new case."
"Maybe. How'd you find out?"
"I've got some connections, Ray. Here, maybe this will help..."
She stuffs a plain manila envelope into my hands. I didn't even realize they still made these things; isn't everything digital now? I raise an eyebrow, and she just nods so I take a peek. There's some art in there. Incriminating art, of some high-class movers and shakers. This might grease some wheels. Some documents too, but I don't have time to read them now. Still, I feel a lot of negative energy leave my soul as I think of how I'm going to put this to use.
"Thanks, K. What do you want for it?"
"I'm hurt, Ray." That pout is so not what I need right now, but it wasn't unexpected.
"Look, K. I know you. Nothing's free. I don't want to--"
I cut myself off when I see a news piece being broadcast on the big screen. Something about those religious nutjobs at the Order of Sol protesting the treatment of mine workers a few days ago. Seems that little skirmish got smoothed over real fast... I wonder if...? Of course! And that's where these photos tie in!
"Never mind that now, K. Look, I gotta get moving. Keep in touch, all right?"
"Sure thing, Ray. Good luck. With everything."
She turns and strolls away; I probably watch her go a little too long, but what can I say? I'm just a man. A man who needs to get to the root of this mess. The root... The Root? Hmmm.
At the bottom of the Beanstalk things are much quieter. Of course, it's still a high-traffic loading dock for the largest and most important elevator since that Otis guy first decided he didn't want to take the stairs, but compared to Broadcast Square anything would be "quieter".
I take a minute to collect my thoughts and check out the hard copy Kate gave me. Something about Captain Beckman's daughter and one of Jinteki's clones? The hell? Well, the Jinteki article is just fluff, but the other note looks promising. In fact... isn't that the the Beckman girl over there right now? Maybe I'll handle this directly. But that can wait a bit.
I think things are starting to turn around. That news piece really opened my eyes; Why doesn't anyone else see it? I give a contact at the NAPD a ring.
"Hey, if you've got anything on the miner's protest from a couple of days ago, could you shove it in a drawer until I get a chance to look at it? You're retiring on Tuesday, what do you care? Awesome. Thanks, Larry. I'll get you a beer at your retirement party or something."
I'm getting closer, I can feel it.
2) Play "I've Got Some Connections, Ray"; discard all three dark cards (Floyd x2, Louis x1) I have to reduce cost to 0. Get a Kate Favor and a Society Favor.
3) Spend Kate Favor to use Broadcast Square; place L-shaped Conspiracy piece at C4 to create a second connection to both the Order of Sol and the Mining Bosses; sadly do not draw the free Shift piece this would have given me if there were any left (thanks, guys :P), but do gain another Society favor.
4) Fly to the Root.
5) Use Wrapped Up In Myself to draw a Rachel Dark card and a Caprice dark card.
6) Play "Why doesn't anyone else see it?", discarding the Caprise card and completely dark shifting to pay for it. I'm the only one who can follow up the document lead at NAPD. End turn.
Whew. Took me a minute to figure out how to "discard" cards, but I think I'm on top of it now.
On a side note: my father, Larry, is a police officer back home, and he is in fact retiring next Tuesday -- although he's genre savvy enough to be on vacation until then. I couldn't resist.
Anyway. End of Day 2: Event time!
I have some errands to run, but will move the game along later today.
You may notice that Father Michael has arrived at the Church of St. Theresa. He is offering counselling.
Louis is up, and Floyd is holding a Dark card.
I think the most efficient use of Louis's time would be to hit a seedy this turn.
I pondered again and again the "request" Mr Li asked of me. No, Sara wouldn't approve. But if the information here is correct - well, no-one's gonna claim the kid didn't have it coming. It's worth digging into a little more - just in case I'm being set up here.
What about Caprice?
Or is it updated and I'm just not seeing the new image?
I flashed my badge. The good thing about bots - they're not programmed to lie or resist authority. "Show me your records on him. Purchases, address, the works. Official business."
The clerk nodded, not inquiring anything further. Not programmed for curiosity either, apparently. The desk printer starts buzzing. I noted with interest the time that he was last in the store.
An hour later, I was in Heaven&Hell. One of the girls here was a former employee of Roxie's, and she owed me one for not turning her in while "soliciting" in the streets. She'd make a good ally. And she proved useful right away.
"That guy? Yeah, I've seen him. Can't really hold his drink, and a blabbermouth, too - he spent the whole night bragging how they'd never find out how he did it."
"Did what, exactly?"
"He wouldn't say, just that he's going to get a lot of money soon, and offered to share them with me if I would, ah, you know. Typical drunk male."
"Charming. Anything else?"
"Yeah, I had to call a cab for him after he caused quite a scene on the dance floor. I asked him where to, and he said to take him to Tony's."
That's weird - you'd think a genius like him could squeeze enough credits from his employer to stay somewhere classier. I should ask Tony - he's a good man.
"Right. Thanks for your help, Eve."
"No problem. Hey - you don't think he's the one that killed Roxie?"
There was steel in her voice. I shook my head. "There's nothing to pin on him. Yet."
***
Tony surprised me by calling me while I was on the way to his place. He said he found a strange note while taking out the trash, and he felt that I would be very interested in it. This rabbit hole just goes deeper and deeper.
5T: Follow up document lead for evidence. Place on Noise.
4T: Move to Heaven & Hell Club, draw a Floyd dark card.
3T: Play 2 - I've got friends all over this town. Reduce cost by 1 due to good mood, dark shift once.
2T: Move to Tony's Flophouse.
1T: Follow up document lead to uncover conspiracy. Gain a society favor. Place piece on C2 so it looks like an L. Put a hit token on Vinnie.
Raymond needs to move the two offset leads.
Since it's the beginning of Rachel's turn I thought I'd let Darian know that I'd like to play a Dark Card -- but I'm at the back of the line in case XiV and/or ScrivJones want to.
"Hey, Beckman. If you know a kid named Oliver, you might want to ask why he owes some very bad men a lot of cash. Just a tip."
I hate to drop a bomb like that and just leave, but I have my own problems. Sorry, kid.
This matches Rachel's current plot, so I'm going to pay the full 4 and fully light-shift.
Shouldn't it be 3 bad baggage either way? 1 for the dark card itself, 2 for either -2K or +2 Greed?
Makes the decision easier, I thought. But maybe I'm misinterpreting "each time your money goes down;" that would make more sense...
EDIT: Checked the FAQ; looks like I was mistaken and Mord is correct. Good to know.
