The film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's
The Hobbit is finally going to start filming starting next month! The Hobbit is a delightful adventure tale that I hoped one day read to my children...
Or I WOULD except they have decided to make 2 movies out of it, making reading books a thing of the past!
For the uninitiated,
The Hobbit takes place during the adventure a younger Bilbo Baggins had where he first ventured out of the shire with Gandalf the gray and a batch of asshole dwarves who freeloaded at his home, ate all his food and fucked up the place. He found his sword "Sting" and a magical ring that allowed him to become invisible. The latter he had to trick from the possession of a creepy, schizophrenic fellow named Gollum. Nothing bad would ever come of that little interaction.
Eventually he makes it to a dragon's lair, witnesses a battle between 5 armies and goes home a hero.
People who know the story might be confused by some of the casting, though. It seems Saruman, Frodo and Legolas may be in the movie. Don't panic! They will probably not be in the main meat of the story.
I assume it's narrated through flashback.
We will see quite a few familiar faces among the cast of the two part Hobbit. Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis have both been signed to come back as their respective characters, Gandalf the Gray and Gollum. Also, Elijah Wood will return as Frodo Baggins, Cate Blanchet as Galadriel, and Christopher Lee as Saruman. Despite some controversy over the appearance of their characters, it is rumored that stars Orlando Bloom, Hugo Weaving, and Ian Holm will make appearances as Legolas, Elrond, and older Bilbo Baggins.
Who is to play young Bilbo you may ask?
So who snagged the role as lead character Bilbo Baggins’ whose story will be told through The Hobbit? That honor goes to Martin Freeman, British actor whose roles include Arthur Dent in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and more recently Dr. John Watson in the UK’s Sherlock. Other rumored cast members include David Tennant (Dr. Who, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), James Nesbitt (Millions), and Michael Fassbender (Jonah Hex, Jane Eyre).
Now it's a shame that Guillermo del Toro isn't working on this movie anymore because, quite frankly, I'd see anything that man creates. In a way it's a blessing, since Del Toro's input really wouldn't work when the look and feel of Middle Earth has been so successfully realized by Jackson on the LotR trilogy.
I first was introduced to the story with the animated movie that my family had a copy of during my childhood. It scared the shit out of me.
This gave me nightmares
Hopefully these movies will measure-up to their predecessors.

I'm looking forward to this. Lots of singing gonna be in dis films.
I also heard that the whole 'bridge movie' idea between the Hobbit and Fellowship was scrapped. So is Hobbit now cut in two?
Seriously though, those fucking dwarves were useless shits.

Yeah. It's going to be 2 movies.
I assume they'll split the movie up around Mirkwood.
I may have shouted "Fuck yes!" and fistpumped.
May have.
(Did.)
Steam: Chagrin LoL: Bonhomie
it is the best book when you completely skip the songs
"what the heck i'm only like 20 pages in and these stupid midgets are just singing all day and all night, this book is boring, time to read some boxcar kids!"
i was mentally warped as a child
oh yea, haven't actually read the songs in years. They are good songs, but you can only re-read them so much.

Not even the couple in Harry Potter
I was used to just skipping over the songs in books from reading Roald Dahl. Some of those songs in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" would have lasted hours.
Gimli was the son of Gloin who was one of the dwarves who was mooching off of Bilbo!
But yes, it's generally considered that the only useful dwarf was Gimli because he wasn't always holed up in the mines hording his gold like the others.
I'm looking forward to how they handle Smaug. Many don't realize that dragons in the Lord of the Rings universe are highly intelligent, even moreso than men. Therefore, they speak the common language. I hope they're able to handle this without it coming off as kiddy as something like Chronicles of Narnia.

Sigh. del Toro had Mignola working on The Hobbit. That is both rad and saddening to me (because neither are anymore).
I may start posting Tolkien fanarts.

smaug!

Martin Freeman looks way more like a young Ian Holm, though.
Also the OP should note that the Seventh Doctor is playing Radagast the Brown.
I would too.
Ahhh good ol'Bilbo
i could never imagine the melodies to any of them
so
Anything from Sir Mix-A-Lot should work fine.
