And this one's weird for me. I've totally read all the books but all I really remember is a few key events. Watching the series for me is a revelation in a different way. I'm just constantly thinking "Oh yeah, that happened, didn't it. Forgot all about that bit."

Only about 100 pages per week. It's a different experience when you already know what will happen, instead of watching it for what will happen, you are looking for what has changed. The series certainly manages to bring a bit more life to the characters.
The books are pretty much are great, mostly because they show a whole fantasy world in motion, with a large cast that act on events far and near in believable (though not always smart) ways. And the outcomes will surprise you at many turns. The unpredictability keeps you on edge.
Comic itself is great.
