New Wii Games Thread: Guitar Hero

RehabRehab Registered User regular
edited February 2007 in Games and Technology
Looking around I didn't see any threads relating to this so I thought I would start one. Given the number and frequency of new Wii projects that have been announced recently, this could serve as a thread for all of those new projects as they are announced or maybe discussion of new Wii games in general. Anyway, this is from the news section over at 1up:

Guitar Hero is (Surprise!) Coming to Wii
Actually, everyone was waiting for it. Still cool, though.
By Patrick Klepek, 02/08/2007

In addition to announcing that Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam would be making a conversion from Wii to PlayStation 2, Activision, via CEO Mike Griffith, revealed they would be producing a Guitar Hero project for Wii sometime in 2007, says The Tanooki (via Kotaku.) No wonder Neversoft is so anxious to hire.

"The key difference in our strategy versus the prior cycle, is that in addition to full support on Sony and Microsoft platforms, we will aggressively target the Nintendo platforms consistent with our multi-platform strategy and Nintendo's expected growth. In fiscal 2008, we will double our offerings on the DS and the Wii, including Spider-Man, Shrek, Transformers, and Guitar Hero."

There really aren't any controller ports on the Wii, outside of the GameCube slots, so will Neversoft attempt to simulate guitar playing via the Wiimote?

Some of the other stuff said in quotes there aside from the announcement of Guitar Hero is also quite promising. Spider-Man for the Wii could be pretty damn cool and of course there were the Shrek and Transformers games announced too (although any of these games could also end up being DS games). It will be interesting to see how they make Guitar Hero work for the Wii too, whether they try to use the Wiimote itself, the Wiimote accessory port, or one of the GameCube ports. What do you guys think about the announcement and how it would work? Hopefully it will be built from the ground up for the Wii instead of being a port of one of the last games of course too.

I've heard a lot of bad news though.

    This is definitely pleasing.

I have no idea why people are so excited about this. I don't think the wii would add anything to the Guitar Hero concept.
Now, Drum Hero. There's something that would work pretty well I imagine.

Why does it need to add anything? Why are people excited about Guitar Hero II for 360?

At worst it's a version of Guitar Hero that's no different from the others.

Personally, I think it'd be nice if it came with a controller that you plug a Wiimote into for wireless and tilt sensing. Then you get a reliable tilt sensor and a wireless guitar.

Heh, I completely missed that thread somehow and yeah, that does basically say everything that this does. That said I will look to change this thread as other new Wii games are announced but thanks for bringing that up. This does seem to be at least a confirmation of everything that was brought up in the GameSpot article AlphaTwo found.

Ever seen a Wiimote? Ever seen the port on the bottom of it? Is there some reason a guitar controller couldn't be plugged into that? I'm honestly curious...I'm not stating that there isn't. I just can't think of one.

Plus, it appears that the Wiimote is designed to have things clipped to it/be clipped to things...so theoretically the guitar could be designed around that. Hell, it could have an opening in the bottom where you basically slide the Wiimote in, making contact the the port on the bottom while holding it in place.
I think it'd be best if the Wiimote went into the top of the guitar, so you could still use the pointer. I mean, it wouldn't be optimal but at least you'd be able to use the pointer on the Wii main menu without taking the Wiimote out of the guitar.

Also, then you could play shooting games with it and pretend you have a really awesome guitar.

Guitar Hero II for 360 offers the possibility of downloadable bonus tracks.

Then again, I imagine this might be possible with the Wii, too...2GB flash cards and all.

But yeah, personally I'm just excited about it because I don't own a 360 and I own a slowly dying PS2. My Wii, on the other hand, is shiny and new.

Guitar Hero on the Wii is great for me.

My PS2 broke long before the first Guitar Hero came out. I'm not buying a PS3, and I'm putting of a 360 purchase, until a price drop.

So I'd like to actually play Guitar Hero for once, rather than mess around with it at a friends house for 20 minutes. :(

This is what i was thinking.

the guitar will have a slot in the neck or the body where you slip your wiimote into it.

this would basically make the guitar into the 360 version. plus it would be cheaper then the other guitars. because they do not have to make wireless technology into the guitar, and they dont have to have the innards for a shake box. its simple, easy, and the price point (if they do it that way) is a customer draw.

Red Octane got bought. Harmonix is tied to them. Activision sounds about right.

The thing about this is, it's the cheapest way to play a next gen Guitar Hero game, and GH is one of those games where next gen graphics are just about the least important thing you could bring up. It's a huge point in the gameplay vs. graphics argument.

Also, I just thought I'd add that Drum Hero, while it was something I thought would be cool at one point, would probably suck. The Wiimotes are heavy, large, and if you think Wii Sports killed some equipment wait until people try to use them as drumsticks. If they designed actual drumsticks for the game, it would probably end up being absurdly expensive (because they'd basically have to be Wiimotes, but smaller...and there'd be two...or at least one and a nunchuk...so $60+).

So yeah, it's one of those things that seems cool until you really think about it at all.

As a fan of all things Guitar Hero, I couldn't be happier. The game deserves to be on every single platform known to man.

As someone who already owns a GH1+GH2 setup for my PS2, I think the Wii version additions would have to be mighty strong in order for me to repurchase a version. I'm hoping that they take heavy cues from the 360 version and add online scoreboards as a minimum.
