Dexter is a television show on Showtime that's about a bad guy. He knows he's a bad guy, but he's not going to stop.

Dexter Morgan is a serial killer who exclusively kills other serial killers who have escaped justice somehow. But that isn't all he is. He's also a blood spatter analyst for the Miami police. His intimate knowledge of their investigation techniques, as well as detective skills and forensic experience, allows him to both escape being found at (at least, at the beginning of the show) and to hunt down his murdering prey.

You kind of get this weird feeling, somewhere around 4 or 5 episodes in, that you want Dexter to keep killing people. This is a credit to the show. It's not so black and white as you think it is going in, although I'm sure people will come in here now that I've posted that in the OP and say, "I've been rooting for him to get caught since Season 1!" Okay, guy, you don't count.

The show is based on this book by Jeff Lindsay. Apparently the first book is pretty good, and the show follows it fairly closely. The second season of the show is more of an adaptation distillation, but totally different from the second book. By the third season, the show has become something else totally apart from the books, and according to people who have read past the first book, this is a very good thing.

The show has won numerous awards. The list is too long, so if you want to see, go here.

Right now, the show is on Season 8. You can find trailers for it somewhere but don't go find them because all a Dexter trailer does is fake you out.
=-=-=-OFFICIAL THREAD POLICY REGARDING SPOILERS-=-=-=

New viewers be fucking warned!

We do not spoil anything from the prior season until the new season arrives. The DVDs do not come out for each season of Dexter until directly prior to the new season. So right now, you can freely discuss seasons 1-7 in this thread without using spoiler tags. This is a show where ruining something for a new person absolutely destroys the impact. There are many twists and turns and I will personally report anyone who reveals them and ignores this spoiler policy.

So to recap:

Seasons 1-7: Okay to openly discuss.

Season 8: I will fucking cut you.

My favorite episode of this show so far is the Thanksgiving episode from Season 4.

Typically when I watch the preview episodes, it's like... yeah okay, they're trying to hype me up to watch the next one, whatev.

But that particular episode just came out of nowhere like a bolt from the blue. The entire time I was just like... holy shit

It bad that my first thought at seeing the number of people being brought in was a heist movie like scenario.

You know, with specialists of different types getting together to pull one last job....then my brain said "Dex could be the...oh, I, uh, don't remember that role in most heist movies."

Yet another actor added to the cast.

I really disliked the end of last season, and found it to be the worst of all the seasons of Dexter. But, even the worst Dexter is better than most TV, mind you.

But I do know that nearly everyone on the show's contract is up at the end of this season. I speculate that a whooooole bunch of this casting blitz is in anticipation of needing to replace some people.

And honestly, once the actors who decide to leave (or who Showtime decides will not be renewed) are sorted out, it could make it the best seasons ever. Some real tension when anyone could be gone...

At least one of the actors who has been cast is a recurring character.

Meaning, will likely continue to be a member of the cast after Season 6.

Don't spoil yourself on who it is if you don't want to know who will not be dead at the end of this year.

I'm working my way through Season 4...I can't explain why I enjoy this show so much.

Dexter's over-the-top monologue is lost on me. I understand it's supposed to be like that, and we're supposed to find it funny sometimes, but I just don't.

Still, they've got the suspense factor pretty well nailed down. I don't care about his relationship with his dad, I don't care about his struggles maintaining a facade with his wife/kids. They somehow manage to keep me wondering how he's going to get into and out of trouble with every season, and they should be commended for that.

And I don't know why, but I find his sister smokin hot. She's kind of awkward, and attractive in a pretty unconventional way. Still, she's a foul-mouthed, rough around the edges cop that rocks my world.

EDIT: Also, the reason I came here to post... (Spoiler'd in case someone hasn't gotten to S4 yet):
John Lithgow is creepy as shit when he plays a bad guy.

Good of you to be careful, but I think we're apparently okay not spoilering anything that came before season 5. Plus, Lithgow is featured as the bad guy even in the ads and promotional material, so that wouldn't be a surprise even if we weren't spoiling the big twists of past seasons (which I would still probably do, for the major stuff).

Anyway, I find Dexter and Deb's relationship to be full of awesome little moments. While I didn't like season 2 nearly as much as other seasons, the scene near the end where they eat steak and drink beer was both touching and hilarious.

    Whoa, just finished season 4.
WTF they killed Rita?!?!?! Totally unexpected, and as much as she annoyed me I'm just kinda sad now. Poor Dex is gonna have to raise 3 kids all on his own? Plus she was like...one of the few things that seemed to make him feel better sometimes. Sucks.

Also, they've gotten kind of sloppy with Dexter's hunting. He's doing a bunch of stuff now that he wouldn't have done in the first few season: scenes where he's got no gloves, where he's around security cameras, where he leaves a paper trail, etc. I realize that at this point it's about plot movement and suspense, but those little details jump out at me because they did such a good job of pointing out his caution in the first few seasons.

Season 5 on bittorrent, here I come!

    Not to mention
    killing the wrong guy.

Honestly I think that your point about
Dexter getting sloppy is somewhat intentional. He's become a bit of a superhero[???] in his own head because nothing seems like a challenge for him anymore (I mean, hell, he took out the Skinner in season 3 the very first time the guy bothered him, AND made it to his own wedding right after, when everybody else was scrambling around trying to get the guy all season), and I think he's subconsciously sabotaging himself by playing fast & loose with The Code to make it interesting. Rita's death is not the first or last time it will bite him in the ass.

The problem is that in DEXTER-WORLD (tm) people are able to escape justice with relative ease and a high frequency, and Dexter is always always able to conclusively prove they murdered someone. In Real Life [tiny](real life is the intellectual property of Sony Entertainment, Inc.)[/tiny], it's impossible to say with certainty how many people get away with murder, but to conclusively prove it prior to murdering your suspect would be quite a bit harder than the show makes it seem.

Eh I'm a pretty big believer in "where there's smoke there's fire." Gotta crack a few eggs to make an omelet and all that. I'd be his friend in real life, even knowing what he does. The only concerns I'd have are how ritualistic he is (would be pretty jarring) and the whole plausible deniability thing.

It's kind of interesting how certain season killers get brought back (like Season 1) and certain guys like Miguel never get mentioned again.

I liked Jimmy Smits as Prado.
Julia Stiles wasn't Julie Benz, but I thought she excelled regardless, especially in the first part of the season when she was utterly freaked and focussed on survival. It's not the actress's fault that they saddled her with an extremely heavy-handed script near the end.

    Personally,
I like Julia Stiles as an actress. She just strikes me as an intelligent person, and that seems to come off well in her roles. So maybe that's not her being a good actress, just picking roles that fit her? I dunno.

Seasons 2 and 3 were the worst so far IMO. Didn't care for the british pyro or the Prados. 4 was easily the best so far, fucking John Lithgowe stole the show.
