I am so glad that this post and your review did not spoil the best surprise on this album. Seriously, don't click this spoiler until you've listened to 'Myr', at least.
MOTHERFUCKING BANJO!
This part has no business being as good as it is.

Curl of the Burl is fucking cringeworthy. Nothing really standing out yet, but I felt the same the first time I heard CtS and grew to love that.
I cannot get into CtS. Blood Mountain was much better to my ears, and I still listen to it on occasion. I must be missing something vitally important in CtS.

When I first started getting into it I was in love with CtS, but lately I've begun to see what Auto meant when he said (a while ago) that it contains a lot of similar moments to Blood Mountain, just watered down. I still think it's a great album, fun to listen to start to finish (and "Oblivion" remains one of my favs), but Blood Mountain has certainly grown on me as their finest effort. "Capillarian Crest" in particular has caught my attention the last few weeks, not sure how I let that song slip under my radar at first.
That said you guys worry me about The Hunter. I've enjoyed all the songs I've heard so far in some capacity so I hope the rest of the album measures up. I noticed it's all up for streaming on Youtube but I'm not sure I want to spoil myself just yet.
Definitely digging Arch/Matheos, hoping it grows on me after a few plays
So far The Hunter is their most poppy effort I guess, which could be a complaint. I like the sound, although I imagine I'll get bored of it. There's some nice hooks though
Listened to that Tyranex album but it didn't really do it for me, the vocals are cool and everything but I didn't feel like the guitars really brought it, unfortunate
Well, I wouldn't say the Tyranex guitars were amazingly catchy riff for riff, but they definitely bring that raw, old school Tankard and Destruction feeling. Totally fun album, but won't be a top 20 at the end of the year.
Also, decided I'm not going to bother covering the new Opeth album. It's grown tired on me and I don't really feel like dealing with it. If anyone else wants to review that, please do.

Primordial 20th Anniversary gig on Saturday with Solstice and Desaster. I am excite. The CD that came with All Empires Fall has been getting regular spins this week.

It's a shame that it's on the other side of the world. Line-up already looks awesome. Anvil stick out like a sore thumb and Today Is The Day should be higher up on that poster would be my only complaints :P

Shawn Drover is so booooooring.
The song itself isn't bad. Looking forward to hearing the rest of the album, there's a few songs on it that I didn't realize were already recorded as bonus tracks back in the Youthanasia era. So, we're not really getting completely new songs but hopefully the songwriting vibe from that era carries over. As long as Mustaine and Broderick shred like the demons they are I'll be good.
Just realized that fade-in opening reminds me of "Black Magic".
That Megadeth song is definitely better than Public Enemy Number one. I've enjoyed the last two Megadave releases, so this one should be no different.

edited September 2011
United Abominations never really did it for me, and I'd say about half of Endgame remains on my current listening, but I've been meaning to listen to that again and give it another go. I don't doubt I'll find a good amount to enjoy on this one.
edit: Funny story, that album comes out the same day as Lulu...
Yeah, the Lulu... track I heard was...well, interesting. Basically mid-paced groove Metallica with spoken words segments courtesy of Reed...I was also sad, because James' vocals sound good on it. Without Reed, it would be like a half decent mix of Metallica and CoC or QotSA or something.

I didn't hear a whole track, just heard a 30-second clip of 'The View', and the spoken words bit threw me off. A lot. But I heard James come in just at the end. Should be interesting at least.

Okay, yeah. Interesting. I'm not convinced yet. Lou Reed's style bothers me. But James, as Auto said, sounds really good. The repeated "I AAAAAAAM" at the end got a little goofy.
Meh.
How has The Hunter grown on people who've heard it? I'm picking it up Tuesday.
I haven't been able to get into Chickenfoot. Hagar sounds possibly better than ever, but I just have a hard time accepting Satriani in the role of predictable rock/blues music, and even when he starts shredding it seems unmemorable. I'm more into stuff like Driving at Night and Surfing With the Alien, when his playing was itself a voice over these campy but deep instrumentals.
*snip* ... Also, I just drove 3000 miles from New York to Los Angeles. Thank you so much for the Coroner and Artillery recommendations, as those bands got me through a lot of the American Southwest, which is a beautiful (but boring) place to drive through ... *snip*[/b].
Now you need to check out a high quality version of Deathrow's Deception Ignored. I finally have decided that I agree with auto, that it is the absolute apex of German Thrash. I had to listen to it a few times to finally get it balanced properly (the bass lines and bass parts of the rhythm guitar lines are amazing and necessary, but pretty much inaudible with flat equalizer settings), but when you get the settings right, this shit can't be beat.
Seriously, check out Germany's finest thrashing hour, and worship it's ridiculously amazing riffs with us!! \m/
Let me also agree that Vader fucks and kills the competition AGAIN, though I give Septic Flesh a slight edge in the rankings.
A really nice run of great prog metal releases!?? Great finds, auto!! Not my favorite metal genre, but Anubis Gate and Arch/Matheos rule!!
Can't wait to check out the new Deivos, Morbus Chron and Myrath albums!!!
Edit: Going to check out Morbus Chron right now!

Going to pretty much come out and say that the Miasmal full-length is my number one album of the year.

I can see where you're coming from. I don't think Satch quite fits into a band situation as well as, say, Vai did during his run with David Lee Roth (or to a slightly lesser extent, Whitesnake). That said, I found the first Chickenfoot album to be a fun record. It's not amazing by any stretch of the imagination. But I've put it on in the background at parties or whatnot and it's good for that. And it has a few really, really good tracks that I enjoy regularly. "My Kind of Girl", "Sexy Little Thing", and "Turnin' Left" in particular. So I'm looking forward to hearing what they can put out after working with each other for a while. And you're right about Sammy. Michael Anthony is nothing to scoff at either.
I always enjoyed the symmetry with Van Halen and Chickenfoot/David Lee Roth. Both ex-singers go off and start groups with another superstar guitarist, who both happened to know each other already through one teaching the other.
edit: Speaking of Van Halen, anyone else pay attention to the rumblings of a new record on the horizon for next year? Apparently it's well on track to being released but there hasn't been a single word about it from anyone in the Van Halen camp. It'll be interesting to see if they can put out a killer record on par with the old shit. They sounded good with Dave when I saw them in '07.

Reviewing the new Opeth and Taake later today, perhaps you might like these?

Meh.

There's some parts on it I really like. Defintely softer than their previous efforts. Creature Lives is an interesting song anyway
Probably my favorite 'Hitler Reacts' video yet.
