I firmly believe that Neurosis is one of (if not the) heaviest bands ever. While I love Alcest to pieces, I doubt they can match the intensity of "Through Silver in Blood," "Aeon," "The Web," or something along those lines.
Also, I just drove 3000 miles from New York to Los Angeles. Thank you so much for the Coroner and Artillery recommendations, as those bands got me through a lot of the American Southwest, which is a beautiful (but boring) place to drive through. At any rate, now that I'm back, I will get my reviewing on and finish up Cult of Luna.

Scott Kelly from Neurosis guests on one of the new Mastodon tracks, "Spectrelight". It's actually a fucking sick tune. Not gonna lie, based on the three I've heard so far, I think The Hunter is going to fucking melt faces.

I meant with regards to the type of show I was expecting. Lots of atmosphere with some sort of visual show and the crowd appreciating the quieter parts of the music. This happened when I saw GY!BE and Neurosis but unfortunately not with Alcest.

I feel pretty lucky for having been able to see Kelly perform three times. He's absolutely astounding and commands the respect of the entire room. I'm sad that the same couldn't be said for Neige.
But Neige commands the respect of footwear everywhere.
So it hasn't given me the shivers quite as much as its predecessor, but the new Wounded Kings is still rather excellent, and the new female singer as well:

I'd go for that for ETID. Their newest one was pretty great. I've never heard of either of the bands GWAR are playing with here (Viking Skull and Sister)

They're a fun band live, too. I got to see them with Trap Them earlier in the year.

So I think even with the giant boner I have for the 'Big 4' and the bands that are a part of it, the whole jam at the end is starting to be kinda goofy. They played 'Overkill' tonight at Yankee Stadium. I mean, I'd still like to witness it. Buuuuuuut... yeah.
Kind of had to laugh though, towards the end of the song Lars passed the kit over to Lombardo, who proceeded to absolutely shred the double kicks at a good pace faster than what Lars was playing at. Immediate change in the overall sound. Hetfield did this goofy little hop thing and all I could imagine him thinking was "Holy fuck that's what it feels like to have a solid rhythm section, I forgot".
Then Benante jumped on after and did the same thing. Sigh... Lars never was the best drummer of the bunch but he has sure fallen a loooooooooooooooooooong way.
Well, Lars is from an entirely older school of drumming, rooted in rock and NWOBHM which was not known for its technique so much as functionality. He's never been keen on extremity, though I do think he was interesting on the first four albums (perhaps ...And Justice for All was his personal peak).
Lombardo is basically one of the progenitors for extreme metal drumming.
Big 4 was pretty awesome. Anthrax nailed it, Megadeth played like shit, and then Slayer and Metallica were both great.
At one point during Megadeth's set I literally threw my hand up in the air in frustration and took a 3 song piss/merch/food break.
I saw their setlist, just about the shittiest thing ever. I mean, I know Mustaine had a bad neck and that they only have so much time to play songs, but goddamn, play something better than 'Trust', 'She-Wolf', 'Sweating Bullets', etc etc. Make those ten songs count.
And @autothrall, I guess I never really thought of it that way. I'm not saying that Lars' early work wasn't interesting. I'm just saying he's gone to shit so hard he can't even play what he played back then.

It's probably true. I haven't seen him live in many years, and doubt I'll ever pay the price for a gig like this.

Best (or worst) quote I ever read from him was last year, maybe the year before, somebody asked him what kind of new things he was working on with his drumming, any new techniques, etc etc. His answer? "Is there a number less than 0?"
I lucked in to seeing Metallica for free a few years ago at Madison Square Garden. My friend is a big name employee there, whose info I probably shouldn't reveal lest this somehow comes back to bite his or her ass, but suffice to say I was able to see Metallica for free. It was an alright show despite them playing like half of Death Magnetic, but it's pretty clear that Lars's drumming is a pretty big weakpoint for the band. That said, they did play "Last Caress," so that was cool.

New Mastodon is basically a straightforward stoner rock/metal album. I couldn't get into Crack the Skye because I felt like it was trying too hard to be weird and proggy, but this goes a little too far in the opposite direction. It's a solid album for what it is, but it's not even in the same league as Blood Mountain.

This is pretty much what I was expecting/afraid of.

I really liked Crack The Skye. I'm hoping I enjoy this one as much.

Which is a real shame because I was looking forward to them and expecting a show in the vein as GY!BE or Neurosis.

It's sad, but at least they won't drive it into the ground (which they were headed towards).
Meanwhile, if any of you are seeking something 'different':

I agree wholeheartedly with your review. I feel like the album's only fault is the fact that The Shadow Over Atlantis was so damn good.
Seems there is a new Arckanum album coming out any day now:
Fall 2011 is turning out to be like a videogame holiday season...for metal.
Also: I saw that a local proggy/space rock band from Boston (Junius) got tapped to replace Ghost. They're not bad.
They're a fun band live, too. I got to see them with Trap Them earlier in the year.

There's a new Deivos album for you Polish death metal freaks.
This is pretty much what I was expecting/afraid of.
