[Breath of Fire] BoF 6: Capcom Destroys Another Beloved Franchise!
Posts
BOFIV isn't available in europe's psn store, so I say we're even.
Which still continues to annoy me, even a year after the initial disappointment of it not being released here.
BOFIV is my favourite JRPG ever, and if I hadn't foolishly lent it to someone in high school who I should have known would break the disc, then I'd still be able to replay it today.
I don't really even know how I came to own it in the first place, but I'm so glad I did. I think maybe I was surfing the bargain bins in game shops for a used copy of a final fantasy game, and picked this up instead.
As part of the gifts they gave us gift cards to best buy. So I went one day and was looking around. I either had everything else, or was simply not interested. Saw the game picked up and took a chance.
That was one of the better summers and since it's been in my top 10 games and top 5 rpgs ever.
I bought the art book in college and it's amazing.

But look upon it and despair!
Edit:
Basically Breath of Fire VI has been announced....for tablets and smartphones...and pc I guess.
Also Microtransaction MMO..
The art style..yeah.
maybe it'll be good, who knows.
(believe it or not there is such a thing as good-faith micros, but that's another thread)
I was really hoping that they'd eventually make a 3DS sequel along the lines of BoF3 or 4.

This exactly. I really miss this series, along with Suikoden.
I'd given up hope on getting a numbered sequel, but I didn't see this coming. Not with this franchise.
When it fails, it'll only further sink the series and we won't see it again for another decade.
As someone whose favorite JRPG was BoF III, this cuts deep.
Edit:
Look on the bright side. At that point, the series might be handled by people who actually know what they're doing.

Oh god...I'll be almost 40 then!
Hard to imagine it'll have been over 20 years since there was a new BoF game I wanted to play!
This makes me want to fire up BoF 3 & 4 in protest.
Did 3 ever make it to psn? I never actually played it, just 1, 2, & 4.
Yep. That's why it's amazing.
Random battles.

2nd overworld theme, one of the best tracks written for video games ever.

But yeah, BoF3 stands out in a pretty big way with its music score because of the jazz inspiration. It's not a common thing in video games all that much, which is really sad. There's a lot of potential unique sound to be made with it. Probably the one other notable game with jazz inspired music is Streets of Rage 2. But that's another thread.
BONUS VIDEO: dragons you can turn into, but sadly there's no audio so you can't get the full experience of adult Ryu's transformation animation (which ruuuuuuuuuuuuules):

If I could put it on my vita, it'd stand a better chance of getting played right now. That and Suikoden 2...come on Sony.
Is this for 3?
I also need to find time to update the first page to be a general BoF page for all 3 of us that play this series :P
Yeah, here's a link to the thread. Apparently the images still work! I should login to that Photobucket account to give it some longevity.
Also apparently I was temp-banned during it so maybe that was what didn't help things.
Dat last fight, too. Oh man.
Capcom
Capcom
you done fucked up
Yeah that's going to be weird to deal with. Unless they're faction leader NPCs m i rite. brb barfin everywhere
I remember getting stuck in the desert for a while because there were 2 places to get direction. I think you could talk to someone and you could read it somewhere too. One set of directions had an error in it (said west instead of east, or something like that) and that's the one I followed. It took me a long time to notice the error and find my way through.
Also levels like the lighthouse are absolutely horrible. They are by far the worst use of random encounters in RPGs: Trying to solve a switch puzzle where the switches are all in different parts of the dungeon and you keep getting random encounters as you try to figure out how to solve it.

The error in that desert direction was for the oasis with the items, which aren't really necessary. The worst thing about the desert is just how much time it takes. The instructions on how to get to where you're going to progress in the game, though, are pretty accurate. I actually read a tip on my practice run of BoF3 before the LP I was making. There's a set of directions that cuts the trip short (because the original instructions have you walk one way, then another; this shortcut is just the line cutting across).
As for the lighthouse I hate "figure out the switch toggles" type puzzles when it isn't evident from the start what you're trying to do. But in this case, it's actually less of a headache if you start the generator machine, and THEN head out to flip the switches; you can actually see the results of it right away (and I think you only need to toggle one of them). Still, frustrating.

"As if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened."
What the hell?
I made a big effort to beat part 2 years ago, but it is one of the most grindy JRPGs I've ever played and it just frustrated me. I made it as far as the overworld music changing at one point. I really want to finish it though. During the 90s Gamepro had a strategy guide for the game that spanned over a few issues, and seeing all the art in the game and such was like, "I must play this."
Part 4 I saw some of at a friend's house but I never took the chance to play. I have a vague memory of not-currently-in-the-party characters actually being in the back behind battles going on and you could do stuff with them I think?
You should definitely look into part 3 though. It is extremely charming, and the adventures / plot are actually kind of unique as far as RPGs go (it isn't about saving the world, and you don't even see the entire world of the setting - which is probably the most interesting thing about it).
