my buddy has a dog named buddy, and it's some kind of mutt that's clearly got some primitive breeds in it. it's super intense and high energy and doesn't do any of the classic dog afffection things really, but it's still really loyal and social and absurd
a little bit chompy, but not in a hurtful way, just a poorly restrained excitement way
when he acquired it, it was livin' in his old neighborhood eating ducks out of the local pond
There was a thing on nova about dogs. They had some trainers try to raise wolves like they were dogs. Basically they just don't give a fuck about what humans think and get all aggressive.
tl;dr: basically after a few generations of selection for "tameness" the foxes began to get more dog-like behavior and now have started showing various fur mutations.
I actually hate dogs a ton, guys. I will never get over the Doberman that tried to eat my face when I was three.
Ouch. I had an akita give me a good one on the face when I was... wanna say 5 or 6. Missed my left eye by about a millimeter. Still have a couple of scars, but with between my complexion and how long it's been it's pretty hard to tell they're there. Still don't like that breed.

That sucks. My mother got bit by a chow like that when she was a kid. The best/worst part is that it was my godfather's dog, so that made visits to see him awkward for a while.

i used to play D&D with a fellow who had a big old adorable akita
it was a really sweet dog. i get the feeling breeds like that can be just as affectionate and awesome, they just require a substantially more intense amount/type of training
also the first thing my childhood dog ever did to me was bite me when i was like six, but i loved her anyway. but i have a friend whose childhood dog flipped out and tried to crush his head and drown him when they were swimming together when he was small, and now he really doesn't like any dogs, except for that crazy chompy primitive one i mentioned earlier

my friend actually runs the only legit domestic fox import in north america. They're working directly with those researchers. She has tonnnsss of videos of her fox Anya, the first one successfully imported

I ran to the vet immediately and we think it's all right now (a piece of gravel was the problem) but holy crap was I scared.

Yeah, looks like it. He coughed blood a few times but it stopped after he was fed paraffin (also got a shot of something to prevent further bleeding for now).
Right now he's relaxing but he's keeping his head up so it looks like he's not losing strength.
EDIT: he's five, not eight, I'm still shaky and typing nonsense ugh

Pretty much! They're very primitive, and very strong, so it's important to establish who is in charge and teach them to understand commands early on.

Awww, that's good! Glad to hear he's doing better.
But had to get all three boy's in the same picture before I threw them in their carrying cases to go to the dreaded vet for their yearly checkup.

Legal fees, licenses, import export, permits, transport, documentation, soooo much stuff. And your state still might not allow it, but part of their thing is that they'll try to help you with laws and law makers and permits. The first fox she tried to get was from that shitty place sibfox, she was the first one to actually pony up 6k, but the guy running it was a skeeze and her fox got taken by the government because of what a shitty job he did so that's why she's running it herself now with help from partners. Besides, if you don't have 8k for a fox, you probably don't have another 5k for the enclosure you're gonna have to build. And then more for vet fees and food.
It is too bad foxes are totally 100% illegal no ability to get permits in canada

It is ok to hate them.

I see your geese and raise you a swan.
At least geese are delicious
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better

Man
The swan at my nearby park are okay, but the geese are just the fucking worst.

I would love to have a place big enough to justify having an Akita around.
