[DnD 4e PbP] Lair Assault: Forge of the Dawn Titan (Game Thread)

Lair Assault: Forge of the Dawn Titan

You race through the tunnels beneath the mountain. Mordai Vell, Asmodeus' favoured cultist, is only minutes away from completing the creation of the artifact that will give him the power to subject Neverwinter to his will.

You turn a corner and abruptly the tunnels end, changing into finely carved stone walls etched with images of fire that encircle a larger room. Sconces hold everburning torches that cast their light far and wide throughout the area. The wide room before you contains four shallow pools of clear liquid, holding a number of finger-length yellow fish. To the north lie a set of large iron doors, with two more sets of these doors also appearing across the room from you.

Chanting reverberates through the walls, but as you enter the chanting stops, replaced instead by a male voice. "So, the Lord Protector sent some fools to stop me. No matter--you'll never reach me in time." The voice pauses and then cries out, "My Lord Asmodeus! Great Maegera! I beseech you to help me destroy these interlopers." The chanting then resumes and you feel a wave of magic wash over the area. The room seems to grow hotter.

It is at this point that the denizens of the entry room finally begin focusing intently on your arrival. Four robed-cultists linger about within the pools, drenched head-to-toe. Those unfortunately appear to be the only mortal creature within the room as in the centre of them, positioned directly at the centre of the walkway's cross is a mis-shaped hulk of a beast whose maw hangs open revealing dozens upon dozens of teeth. Behind him, standing in front of the far doors at the other end of the hall is the shell of a man's bones standing upright and glaring at you from behind a halo of burning fire which covers its entire form. A pair of statues rest in the corners of the room, flanking the group of creatures and providing a sense of foreboding as their lifeless eyes join the skeleton's in staring you down.

Please come up with a token image and pick a square on the entry platform on the western side of the room (W0 to Y1). Also, Roll Initiative!

All of you have 20 rounds to defeat Mordai Veell before he crafts his scepter and destroys you all.

Illumination is all provided by everburning torches, filling the rooms with bright light.

Ceilings are 10 feet above the floor.

Doors are made of iron and can be opened with a minor action. However, at the end of the turn that it was opened the door will automatically close itself. A character adjacent can take a standard action to wedge a door open so it doesn't close.

Wall climbing requires a DC 15 Athletics check if you for some reason would like to.

Fire resistance is halved within the dungeon due to Maegera's lingering primordial magic. This does not affect resistance to all damage.

Jessup Owlbeard stared at the large chamber and each of the creatures occupying it in turn. The bright crimson robes he wore glowed with a strange sort of aura, like heat rising off of the sand. Small colorful pouches filled with the spell components dangled loosely from his belt.

"I think you'll find that the Lord Protector chose his champions well." His tiny voice voiced echoed in the large chamber.
If no one has any objection I'll have Jessup start out in X0. I'm guessing there isn't any cover or concealment to be found in this chamber so Jessup's Reactive Stealth probably isn't an option.

Melgar snorted at the creatures that stood before them. He began twirling his spiked chain nonchalantly, like a child with a toy. "Undead or alive; don't matter. You're all gonna be dead for real soon enough."
    Y0 is fine by me.

A wry grin appears on Sceolans face as the enemy draws their attention to the party. He scans the room, looking for a prime target to suffer his first shot.
Sceolan will claim W0, unless the cleric wants it, in which case he will take W1

    Round 1/20!

The devil snarls in its toothy grin at the challenges being sent its way while the dripping elects relax into a receptive pose, anticipating the oncoming battle in studied silence. The chain-wielding bugbear is the first to move as his lust for battle readies him to strike. In the background, the continual chanting echoes throughout the temple adding a cacophony of voices that signals the importance of what you were brought here to stop.

Full Disclosure: neither the online CB nor Orokos was recognizing my Spiked Chain as an eligible weapon for me to wield. I uploaded a different version of Melgar, equipping him with a Short Sword with the same enchantment as a "stand-in" weapon so I can get the bonuses calculated.

Melgar lopes forward and confronts the toothy-mawed devil in front of him. Despite examining the creature for its weak spots, Melgar is distracted by the chanting, and his chain strikes nothing but the air beside the creature.

    "Uh, oh."

    Summary:
    Move to X4.
Minor: Predatory Eye vs Seared Devil (adds +1d6 damage on my next attack against him)
    Standard: Torturous Strike vs Seared Devil (20): 1d20+12+2 19 2d10+12+1+2d8+4+1d6 43

Wow. Just wow. I'm used to rolling that low and still hitting guys. Unless I missed a +1 bonus somewhere, this is not going to end well.

    Sorry, guys. :(

Snorting and sensing weakness, the devil wades into the pool sending ripples along its length before twisting in place and connecting a slam with the bugbear's body. Mostly shaken by the blow, it nevertheless leaves an after-image of falling ash and directs Melgar's attention onto the Devil for the near future. In the back the flaming skeleton thrusts its hands forward and sends a fiery orb shooting across the battlefield. Its target is not the advancing bugbear, however, but instead connects with Bjorn's body, lightning his clothes on fire. The remaining human temple elects still remain motionless, preparing themselves further.

Upon scanning the room for a suitable target, Sceolans attention is drawn to the rampaging Seared Devil. In an attempt to land a clean shot, he steps forward and takes aim. But the distraction of the writhing yellow pool causes Sceolan to lose focus and the arrow sails over the shoulder of the devil, landing harmlessly in the back of the room. In frustration he steps back to his previous position and takes a deep breath as he tries to clear his head.

The devil is almost as shocked as you are as a pair of well-placed strikes from the party drop the creature to the ground in seconds. This gives the skeleton and elects some pause as they falter in their steps. A moment later and a fiery bolt coalesces out of the air in front of the northern most statue at the other end of the room, shooting across the field and nearly setting Melgar on fire as it sails harmlessly wide into the wall behind you. This wakes the elects back up who reposition themselves and charge into the fray, scoring numerous hits with their concealed short swords upon you. Still, the speed at which you dispatched the demon gives you a good morale boost for the coming trials.

Jessup raised his hand out in front of him, the glowing crimson orb he held began flicker and crackle like a log on a fire. Than a scorching pillar of flame erupted between two of the Acolytes. One of the men was instantly engulfed in the blaze. His clothing caught fire and he fell to the floor in a wirhting mass until his body stilled second later. The second acolyte was swifter than his counterpart. The sleve of his robe caught fire but he batted the falmes out quickly.

The gnome wizard grinned. "Just an opening act to warm up the audience."

It turns out that the liquid sloshing around in the pools as the elects run through them isn't exactly water. Jessup determines this rather quickly as his Scorching Burst incantation immediately sets the northern pool on fire in about the time it takes the gnome to gasp from the shock of it. Similarly, it appears that the elects are doused in much the same liquid as they are rapidly consumed by the roaring fire. Unfortunately for your group, however, these elects have been trained to accept self-immolation as a form of worship and as each of them is consumed by the fire they explode outward in a small fireball, scorching several of you.

Oil Ignites (when the oil is included within a close or area fire attack) - Anyone in the oil when it ignites takes 10 fire damage. Melgar shouts to Koh-nunDah and Laggard, "Move out of the way, you two! I'm going to ruin this man's day."

    Round 2/20!

The quick flip of the bugbear's chain is enough to bludgeon the cultist to death but as the man falls, he once again triggers an explosion of fire which sets the second of the main pools of oil ablaze. Melgar & Koh-nunDah take the brunt of the initial explosion but the last remaining elect also causes some discomfort as his immolating charge catches Jessup off-guard and lights bits of the mage's attire on fire. Bjorn, already having been burnt by the skeleton's previous flame orb volley sees this fiery wave coming and effortlessly ducks out of the way of the blast.

Meanwhile, the blazing skeleton tosses another orb towards the party, smashing against the armor of the party's dwarven cleric, singing Laggard's beard in the process. Then, in a strange turn of events the skeleton walks directly into the burning oil, the flickering flames obscuring the creature's form rather well.

Drawing back his bow, Sceolan keeps his eye on the Blazing Skeleton as it walks into the flames. He follows it with the tip of his arrow. Even as the skeleton is tagged with an arrow from within the flaming oil, the remaining fire-spitting statue primes up with another shot towards the party. A ball of flame forms within its stone mouth, drawing its heat from the nearby inferno and the surrounding air. It then shoots out and slams into Laggard with an explosion of fire that catches the dwarf off-guard, sending him sprawling into the smaller pool of oil just behind him.

"Ack!" Laggard bellows, as he's pummeled again and again with fire and pain. Digging in his heels, though Laggard resists being pushed around by a milk drinking skeleton and his fire tricks. "Not me beard, ya son of an Orc!"

Limping back within party lines, Laggard clutches his holy symbol and calls upon the dwarven pantheon of gods to see him through this ordeal. And for his beard to grow back fuller and even more luxurious than ever before. A soft glow emanates from the dwarf and everyone feels just a little bit better.

Batting at his flaming hair violently Jessup danced around the floor shouting elven. When the fires subside his hair is much shorter and charred.

"Do you have any idea how much the barber charged me for this haircut?!" He raises his orb towards the flaming skeleton and it began to swirl in his hand again. A hissing sound escapes from the orb accompanied by several sparks as it darkenes in his palm. "Damn that merchant!"

Charging forward a few feet while fidgeting with his orb jessup drew a small green bottle out of one of his many pouches. He stops right behind the bulky frame of his dwarven companion. "You've looked better my friend, you may want to bolster yourself of this brew. It's flavor is no comparison to a dwarf spirit but the healing properties are remarkable."

I'm assuming since this is one big encounter we just carry on as normal?

Sceolan breathed a quick sigh of relief as the skeleton went down. But knowing that the traps were still active he decided there was no time to waste. It was best to get out of there as soon as possible. He ran straight for the next door and opened it, hoping for safety behind it

    Round 3/20!

The blazing skeleton reels under the repeated attacks by your party, bits of bony spraying off into the flaming oil with each successive strike. It then howls as the last of the attacks sends it crumpling into the oil as a useless collection of bones. As it does so the trap near to you at the north end of the room glows red briefly before fading, returning itself to a normal looking twisted demon-dragon stone thing and not a fireball spitting annoyance.

Sceolan then rushes across the field, opening the door to the northern-most room and glances inside, gaining a peek of the area beyond. The room contains a series of stone platforms hanging from the ceiling by chains. Boiling mud lies twenty feet beneath the platforms,t he surface of which is repeatedly punctuated by powerful geysers. A triangular stone ledge is set in two of the room's corners, and another ledge is across the chamber, with a set of double doors behind it. Standing in front of this set of double doors, however, are a pair of robed men who bar the way forward and occupying the centre of the room, hanging in mid-air over no platform rests a flapping, flaming bat.

The door then closes, giving you time to think.

    ---

Bjorn takes 1 Fire damage (2 resisted, 2 absorbed) as a result of ending his turn in a square of the aura before the skeleton died.

The platforms are suspended from the ceiling and are 20 ft above the mud. They don't swing or anything when you walk across them. The ledges are also 20 ft above the surface of the mud and climbing them or the walls requires a DC 15 Athletics check.

Also, at the end of Sceolan's turn the door automatically swings shut.

    Round 4/20!

The sounds of the solid door opening and slamming close echo for a time within the area before Bjorn has enough with the blasted thing and forces the contraption open for ease of movement. As Jessup opts to examine one of the alternative egresses from the entry chamber, Koh-nunDah spends his time swatting away bats as a fiery version charges at him from its position hovering high above the boiling mud of the chamber of platforms. His combat prowess still on display, the defender easily dodges the creature's rash strike before, causing it to pivot in place and remain hovering just a few feet away from his face.

    ---

The northern door from the entry chamber is now jammed open by Bjorn and ceases to close automatically.

Melgar lumbers after his companions into the next room. Seeing Koh-nunDah struggling against some sort of bat, the bugbear swings his chain and clocks the creature upside its head.

With Melgar's advance into the room to help Koh-nunDah's precarious positioning, the Hellfire warlocks burst into action. One hops along the western platforms before tossing a burst of fire towards Sceolan, lighting his clothes on fire to smolder and burn. Immediately following that Sceolan feels something pull at his body, clouding his vision with flames before a burst of flame whisks him away. For everyone else watching it seems that the second Warlock and Sceolan swap positions and as the Warlock appears out of the puff of flame in the doorway he stabs quickly at Bjorn, catching him in the side with his burning implement. He grins, the gambit having proven successful and setting yet another of your party members aflame.

More worrisome is that just before Scoelan is whisked away in a puff of flame, the warlock's previous position exploded in a ball of flame covering his partner is a wash of fire, that while it seemed to have done no damage is nevertheless a troubling development.

When the warlock teleported, all creatures within 3 squares of his point of departure took 10 fire damage which in this case was entirely resisted on the part of Warlock 1.

Sceolan's focus was on the battle between the monsterous bat and Koh-nunDah, so much so that he didn't see the huge burst of flame heading his way from the other side of the room. Next thing he knew he had a stinging burning sensation over his body and he was somehow in a new location. Completely disoriented, he drew his bow and took a shot at the first enemy he saw, but the confusion of what just happened saw the arrow fly clear of it's target. After seeing his shot miss, he takes a second to shake the remaining flames off his clothing and regain his composure

"You dare approach me! FOOL!" As the fire bat flits near him Koh-nunDah roars and lashes out at it. His blade misses connecting cleanly, but the shear force of the strike blows out some of the flame the bat is producing. All enemies take notice of his mighty roar, and are wary to be near him.

    Action:
Standard: Dangerous Presence vs. Fire Bat AC 19=17, miss for 11 damage
All enemies in my Defender Aura grant CA until end of encounter. If Fire Bat shifts or makes an attack not including me, I'll use Vengeful Gaurdian to hit for 9 more damage. You can use this as my AoO roll if it just moves away as well.
