I just started System Shock 2 for the first time, and it scared the shit out of me.
That game is the scariest game ever. Seriously. Nothing tops it. I think the only thing that might come close is Bioshock. Unreal could have done it if it had more than that one scripted sequence where you're in the hall and all the lights go out one by one. Oh, Eternal Darkness was pretty close, too.

Shodan is now probably my favourite villain ever, and one of the creepiest I've ever encountered in a game.
i think that's the one with his protege or whatever?
i don't remember if you have a gun or not, but leave her tucked under the first bridge you arrived at and head north to explore some of the houses, trying to keep contact with any shibito to a minimum
call her up after you've either seen everything you need to see or gotten a weapon and then head west past the buildings and towers, avoiding the sniper on one of towers by using the buildings as cover

I emailed the composer of the movie, Jeff Danna, because it was bugging me that I couldn't quite place what track was playing while Rose was in the basement of Brookhaven Hospital... and I heard from a bunch of people that it was actually from a Shadowman game
And he emailed me back saying he couldn't remember what scene I was talking about...? But everything in the movie is either from Akira's original soundtracks or something he wrote
So
Brookhaven Hospital basement track: original composition
I realise that this is only important to me, but I had to know

I've seen my friends play SH 1-4 all the way through because we've made a tradition of playing horror games all together.
But, when it comes to holding the controller and actually playing it, oh god, I couldn't ever do it. I'm a big pussy.
That's real dedication right there.

Should I just be able to find them anywhere?
I would say so. The only one that is hard to find is SH1. SH2 kind of is too. They should be cheap enough by now that it's worth the buy.

Fatal Frame was also scary.
Especially when your flashlight would give out
