Well, I paid for the game a month ago, and got it half off as I had some Amazon credit. So I'll play the game and enjoy it. But I won't buy the 12 characters down the road.

It's not hard to predict. They'll keep pushing it until some trailblazer finds the line that kills enough consumer goodwill to actually tank sales of a game rather than just cause internet moaning. Then everyone else will dial back it just a notch and there they will stay.

In the mean time hold on tight because there's still plenty of money being made from DLC which implies we have a lot more internet moaning to go before a new status quo emerges.

I'm pulling bets that Capcom will be the first to introduce the on-disc locked "Alternate Ending" as DLC for a game.

    More of the same.

And here I'm thinking Capcom (or maybe Namco, any of the prolific fighting publishers) having a whole wing of their characters locked on disk as DLC. A whole fire team's worth.

Every fighting game maker does this but Capcom was pushing it and stepped over the line this time IMO.

It is a quarter of the final roster.

So here's something: GDC: Japanese dev mocked 'your games suck'
Phil Fish, the indie games designer who broke onto the scene with his unpublished platformer Fez, today sparked anger by publicly deriding the work of Japanese games developers in front of a packed audience at GDC.

Following a GDC screening of Indie Game The Movie – a documentary about games design that Fish heavily features in – the Canadian Polytron developer took part in a Q&A discussion with the audience.
A standing ovation for the movie itself set the tone for an open and positive discussion about indie games with the audience, yet when an unknown Japanese developer took to the mic to ask a question, the mood visibly turned.

The Japanese developer praised the movie and said he was pleased to see how many independent developers had been inspired by games such as Super Mario Bros and Zelda since their childhood.

But when he asked what the panel thought of modern Japanese video games, Phil Fish (pictured) immediately replied “your games just suck” – a comment that sparked an audible reaction from the crowd, though some were cheering.

    ...

The Japanese game industry may not be the force it once was, but it isn't fair to say ALL of their games suck. Especially from a guy that hasn't even released one yet.

There's just less coming out these days, which also translates into less great ones coming out.

Fez might turn out to be one of the most amazing games of the year it's released in, but I'm really not all that surprised. There are a lot of indie developers who feel they have a lot to prove and a desire to stand out, and sometimes they do it by acting like they have a huge chip on their shoulder. Duder should consider that not everyone gets a work environment where they can develop their idiosyncratic puzzle-platformer for over five years without any pressure to release it before it's 'done.'

And again, games are a license, not every widget on the disk. If that were true then every game I've bought would give me license to use the havok engine, or unreal. The disk has it on there, so I own it!

Quote where they are a license. Software that you download and install on your computer to use is considered a license. As far as I know, no person has ever been in court for making a personal, not distributed, copy of a video game or cracking the key for their video game.

Quote the part of copyright law and/or case that stated it is against copyright, please.

THQ is being sued by Adidas for $10 million after it failed to bring keep-fit title MiCoach to market, according to reports.

The Oregonain claims that the sports giant has filed a lawsuit through the Multnomah Country Circuit Court in Oregon, US, for breach of contract after a deal signed in December 2010 meant THQ had to release the product by January 2012.

The software was designed to measure exercise and was being developed to compete with rival products such as Nike+ and Garmin watches.

Adidas is seeking damages of $10.6 million as well as an injunction against the publisher from selling the rights to a MiCoach-related title.

The lawsuit says that in December THQ told Adidas it was unable to finish the title after a series of lay-offs at the troubled company directly affected the game’s development.

Adidas has also claimed that THQ has refused to pass on the app to a different developer despite being unable to complete the project.

The lawsuit would be a further setback for the troubled publisher, which last month was forced to lay-off 240 workers as part of sweeping cost-cutting measures across the company. It has also been threatened with delisting from the NASDAQ stock exchange if it fails to turn round its fortunes.

How was Adidas DAMAGED from this?

Fine, then. Whatever. It would have to be more productive than this constant circle jerk whenever the premise of on-disc content rears its head. If this is so bad for the consumer, then do something about it. Otherwise, get used to it.

What if instead Capcom priced the game at, say, $80 or $100, which would include the DLC characters. Would that be a valid cause for contacting consumer protection folks?

Because the situation would be nearly the same as it is now.

The 12 characters were probably intended for 'Super' Street Fighter x Tekken, which I'd guess would be 1600 ms.
    re: capcom day 1 dlc
also, just because the characters have a 'finished' moveset doesn't mean the developers consider them finished - capcom might not have felt they had enough time to playtest them, ensure they aren't broken, etc.

I understand the instinct to feel like capcom is cheating people, but really - if you think the game is worth it, buy it. if you don't think the game is worth it, don't buy it. also, for all the people saying 'I'm not going to buy SFxT when SSFxT is going to come out in about a year!' - pretty sure Yoshinori Ono has claimed that any updates to SFxT will be DLC, and not new disks (ala SF4 iterations)

also, no one seems to remember that we got the AE 2012 patch for free. what money grubbers!

So Mass Effect fans are a bunch of horny pansexuals.
Mass Effect 3 producer Casey Hudson says fan-feedback has been a key factor in developer BioWare's decision to include a wide array of romantic possibilities for players, including homosexual relationships and inter-species love.

Speaking in this week's episode of Up at Noon, Hudson said, "We got a lot of feedback about romances, and the way people perceive our game. It's kind of interesting, because as we've layered in things, you can make a lot of choices about relationships. At some point over the course of the series we realized that people felt that same-sex relationships were a conspicuous absence from the options you have as a player. And we always strive to be inclusive. So we included that."

He added, "When we started the series, we actually had no idea whether our characters would be as compelling in terms of human emotion as we wanted them to be -- especially with alien characters. So we didn't design romances for some of the aliens like Garrus and Tali. But the voice acting turned out to be really good, and even though they were alien they kind of had a really deep ability to convey human emotion. And people wanted romances with them. And so we did that as well, and they become some of our more popular relationships."

Well, reading his Twitter feed (@PHIL_FISH), there's not much explanation other than reiterating that he thinks most Japanese games suck. Doesn't really go into reasons. Such as "im sorry japanese guy! i was a bit rough, but your country's games are fucking terrible nowadays."

I'm sure some devs in the room feel similarly, but it could've been said in a lot more constructive ways. Wonder if this will affect his potential sales or popularity.

I also find it amusing he said this when his game Fez has some rather obvious visual inspiration from Cave Story, an indie, Japanese developed game.

Ever since the huge influx of, and mainstream attention given to, anime near the turn of the century, Japanese media has been one of the stereotypical "cool" things to hate on the internet, and it does carry over to real life often enough.

Apparently he did actually elaborate (although it doesn't sound like he was any nicer about his explanation). Note this is from the same article linked before:
Others looked on awkwardly as the Japanese developer was then subjected to a string criticisms about game design flaws in his native country. The developer nevertheless thanked the panel for their response and returned to his seat.

I kind of wish there was more than one article about this incident; or at least one that actually quoted more of the Fez guy beyond the sensationalist line.
