And no this isn't one of those shoe likes anything everyone else hates things
Been legitimate excited for it for awhile now
It looks too dumb to not be fun
Like, if it is dumb in a really fun way, I will be all over it.
But I am afraid that it is going to be dumb in a Duke Nukem Forever kind of way.
GiantBomb's (and most people's) reaction to Duke Nukem Forever surprised me. The word misogynistic comes up a lot, among other things. I always just assumed Duke Nukem was the dumb satirical action hero no one actually wanted to be like. Duke 3D was all in strip clubs and stuff, and the cops were literally pigs, and it was all just big and dumb, I imagined by design. And it was even heralded as such. It was recognized as being satire of action hero cliches, and the hyper-sexualization of action movie love interests and eye candy. Now it seems like everyone's looking at DNF like this is taking itself super serious, and to me, it looks just as dumb and satirical as it did before.
I can't speak to the gameplay since I haven't played it, and the graphics are par for the course. I dunno. I feel like I'm missing something.
Have you heard about the level that's about aliens abducting and raping women to impregnate them?
X-2's battle system is not good enough to make up for how stupid the rest of the game is.
Tales games generally have the most fun battle systems, to me.
I love the idea of the Tales systems but I've never been totally sold on the implementation. There's often too much stuff happening on the screen to keep track of, movement can get a little wonky, animation priority is tricky to figure out and if you are playing co-op the camera often zooms out so far it becomes a hindrance.
I am, however, really excited about Tales of Xilias, 'cuz it looks like they've kept the complexity of the battle system while narrowing its scope to something more manageable.

like for me it being not funny was shitty but understandable. But I cannot deal with rape, implied or explicit, in things. it bothers me on a core level.
in thriller movies and the like this can translate into me being genuinely disturbed
when they try to play it off as funny i just get fucking appalled

I dunno. From the trailers I've seen, I don't really get a Duke Nukem Forever vibe from it. At least, nothing I've seen from this looks or sounds like its coming from a mysogynist or hateful place.
The best way I can describe it is that it looks like a cross between No More Heroes, Dead Rising and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I like all those things.
I mean, I haven't played it yet obviously, so I could be wrong, but I don't really get that disturbing of a vibe from this. It just seems to be kinda out there and weird.
I REALLY need to try X-2 again. I don't even know where the disc is, though. The story wasn't what I expected and I got a bit bummed, which was unfair to the game.
It's not like the story is completely irredeemable, either. It started out with potential.
So, you're this girl who has dedicated her whole life to defeating an evil monster through self-sacrifice. The evil monster is now dead forever and you are still alive. What the fuck do you do now? It seems at least a little purposeful that the game that placed emphasis on changing roles in the middle of combat also happened to touch on the issue of finding a new identity when your old one suddenly doesn't exist.
Unfortunately, they don't spend very long on that conflict and instead go back to their comfort zone of "emo villain is going to destroy the world unless you stop him." And the characters themselves don't really get much development. They're reduced to stereotypes for most of the game.
I don't know. Never actually played the game beyond like 30 minutes, but I read a pretty thorough LP that gave a convincing argument for how the game succeeded from a character development perspective for both Yuna and Paine. It said Rikku was pretty consistently terrible. It's not perfect, but actually seems better about it than the lion's share of JRPGs out there.

DNF tries to reference things from 6-8 years ago to make you laugh.
Not even subtle.
Just straight up Duke sings the America, Fuck Yeah song when America is mentioned. They have the Halo armor and he's all "Armor is for fags"
The game was missing its foil. If Duke had been this absurd, overcharacterization and everybody had just had to deal with his bullshit, it would have been funny. But everyone Duke went to slathered his dick with butterscotch and went to town.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
two characters are captured, raped off screen, and when discovered, Duke is often crack a joke and then they explode. and then in the next room there are alien titties on a wall you can slap around.

well, when duke says "power armour is for pussies" the dude is lik e"yeah, alright" all kind of confused. if that had been the tone for the rest of the game it would have been alright.

Oddly enough, Paine probably gets the most and best character development of the bunch.
Yuna gets some, but it's mostly concentrated at the end and is fairly hamfisted.
And Rikku gets absolutely nothing, except for a scene near the end that you can only get if you have 95% completion. That scene is actually pretty neat, since Rikku briefly talks about how she feels like Yuna and Paine are growing up and figuring out their places in the world while she's getting left behind.
I'll admit that I'm a little biased against the story. Rikku was my favorite character in FFX, and X-2 turned her into little more than a running joke (and it wasn't even a funny joke).
So yes, it is better than a decent portion of JRPGs out there if only for a) it's battle system and b) the fact that it tries to do some interesting stuff with its story.

well the women are in a position of power in this game, so that's a step in the right direction
the only dude in the game so far is a head tied to the main character's ass
so at the very least it's not the "women are submissive playthings" kind of misogyny
Yeah, this is true.
I guess what I meant was that I'm worried a lot of the "humor" will be them trying way too hard to juxtapose the images of girly girls with crude humor.
"She's a cheerleader who says 'fuck' and 'vagina'! Isn't that wild?'"
But I could be wrong, and it could be a genuinely funny game and not weirdly exploitative.
my main issue is that if lines like "WE WEAR OUR VAGINAS PROUDLY" are gonna be indicative of what is going on in the game, I'm gonna spend the entire time wincing

Knowing nothing about Yesterday, I went into the quick look fully expecting it to be some janky ass budget game and was completely sold by the end of it. It looks amazing.
Which twist in BK are we talking about now? The only one I remember was
The fact that the main character was the traitor character. That WAS a pretty cool twist, and was a good boss battle too.
The thing that makes it great is that you are portrayed in the game as the main character's Guardian Spirit. You start off the game with no memory and then when he's revealed as a traitor he also reveals he's the one who wiped your memory at the start of the game. This made the betrayal way more awesome and personal, since he's betraying you directly moreso than he's betraying the other characters in the game.

This is probably one of my favourite Bombcast discussions of all time, they bring up a lot of good points.
Personally, I was all set to play an infamous piece of video game history, knowing there was no way that a good game could have emerged from the pathetic situation at 3D Realms.
And even then, with zero expectations the hive scene in the Quick Look left me genuinely angry because something like that should not have made it into the game, so I ended up not hiring it out.

The people in the comments of that video defending that game are fucking terrifying.
Okay, between discussion of DNF and that libertarian brony thread I'm already a little ill, so let's talk about something nice. Like that really keen Dishonored trailer. I first heard about that game in Game Informer, and I'm quite glad it seems to be moving forward. A dark fantasy somethingpunk Deus Ex style game where you fight stilt cops with plague rats is the fucking cat's pajamas.

Have you heard about the level that's about aliens abducting and raping women to impregnate them?
And Duke Nukem cracking wise about killing them?
Because that happens.
I am not even exaggerating for effect.

Alien rape. Among other things.
aliens rape human women?
i'm not sure what you're looking for here

you shoot the women or the aliens?
or both, i guess

both. you can see it like 15 min into the quick look. it is just vile.
I still don't know how someone looked at that part and went "yeah, alright, this is fine"
