So, I must be missing something, but I can't understand what a rote even is.

  • cj iwakuracj iwakura The Rhythm Regent Bears The Name FreedomRegistered User regular
Rotes are spells. You can improv them if you don't have it, but you get a dice bonus if you actually know it, which is listed in the spell section of the core book(easily the hugest part).

Wow, lots of Libertines so far. Interesting.

    Ah, that makes sense. Thanks.

So, here's what I've got. I'll probably flesh it out later, but I think it's a good starting place.

    Background
    Miles O'Henry

Growing up as one of the working poor in New York isn't ever easy. Miles was one of the luckier ones, though. He managed to get enough of an education that he was promoted off the line and as an overseer. However, when management decided that it had to cut overtime pay to keep the budget in the black, the linesmen (and women, can't forget them, got us through the war and all) wouldn't stand for it, and Miles was right there with them. For two weeks, they picketed, threw rotten eggs at scabs (and maybe roughed a few of them up after hours), and generally made trouble for the factory.

Miles had a pretty bad feeling about going to the picket line on the 16th day of the strike. Part of him was screaming at him: "Stay home, you know that trouble is brewing, it's going to get bloody." But, he felt irresistibly drawn there. Once he got there, Miles couldn't believe he ever thought about leaving. His comrades in arms were there, readying their shields and armor to fight the hordes of slavers who were going to take all that they held dear. Later, his few surviving friends would tell him that he was really off that day, but he had fought the hoodlums that the management had hired like a man possessed. However, immediately in the aftermath of that bloody afternoon, he could see all of the dead slowly rise up and shuffle off the mortal coil. He doesn't remember too much of the journey, but he does remember the tower. It loomed over him like a gravestone, and he saw so many names on it. Thinking that he was dead too, Miles carved his name on it as well and left to what he would think was his eternal rest. Looking back on it, he reckons that he did die that day. Him and his entire world. But he woke up, born anew from the grave.

It wasn't long before he was introduced to Mage society, and he quickly fell in with the Free League. As a union man, democracy was just too ingrained with him to give much truck with the Feudal nature of Atlantean society. Miles has made a pretty good life for himself since his awakening. He's seen the factory workers he oversees thrive, in no small part due to his work with the union. He's never let a bad batch of product slip out, and he's always up for a drink after his shift.

    Maximilian Kohn
    Shadow Name: Cross
    Alex.jpg
    http://sheetgen.dalines.net/sheet/17522

    History:
Maximilian was born to German immigrants who left the old country before the great trouble starting brewing once again. He was only a few months old when he reached America. His name and a slight accent were the only traces of the old country his family gave him, they refused to teach him the language saying that they were American now and nothing would change that. American life made Max grow strong and tall. Work in the factories honed him further. It is no doubt why he was chosen so quickly to be drafted. A brute of that size was a natural born soldier. What they did not see was the man who quietly read during his breaks, who spoke softly as if apologizing for how large he was, the man who one day dreamed of walking the fields of his place of birth.

War changed everything for Max. Basic training was hell, his officers pushed him harder and farther than they did the others. They wanted to turn him into a weapon and that is exactly what they did. When he was finally sent over the seas to Germany the country had been turned into a hellscape and he, now matching his homeland, had become a demon. Max had finally come home.

    Awakening:
Max had been stuck in a trench in the middle of no man's land for almost three days. Shells and bullets whistled overhead both day and night. His only fellow in the trench was the body of a German soldier he had killed with the butt of his gun. Sitting there, cradling his weapon, Max watched a single white dove land on the helmet of his deceased compatriot. The bird rested for a moment then flew into away, upward into the setting sun. As Max's eyes followed the fluttering form his mind suddenly raced upward. If pressed, he describes it as a ant suddenly realize it is sitting in a humans bootprint. A sudden rush of an expanded universe into something minuscule. Awash in this new world and new thinking he got to his feet and walked out of his trench. The official report is that it was a miracle. His fellow soldiers watched him walk across the entire battlefield. Bullets zipped past him, mortars exploded nearby, but Max walked all the way back to safety without being touched. Those that saw it claimed he had a serene, distant look on his face. When they finally took the extra ground, they eventually found Max's trench. In it, they found a corpse with a single word carved into the helmet "Max".

    Current:
After his "incident" Max refused to return to the field. The demon of the 13th division now refused to fight. That moment of pure clarity on the battlefield returned the soul of who he once was. During his recuperation, he began studying various religious texts attempting to understand exactly what was happening to him. Nothing was of much help. Only later, when returned to America and found evidence of others like him did he truly begin to understand what was happened. Early in his arrival he was courted strongly by the Adamantine Arrow, but instead quickly took up with Guardians of the Veil. Max told them his fighting days were over and he wanted to protect the innocent from having to witness the horrors he witnessed. However, as of late he is becoming more and more frustrated with the Veils underhanded methods.

    Appearance:
Max is a very tall man. He towers over most people at his impressive 6'10'' height, but he slouches most times trying to make himself seem unimposing. He generally wears his simple priests clothes underneath a long overcoat. His blonde hair is cut short in standard military style and his flashing blue eyes are hidden behind simple spectacles. His heavy iron and gold family cross is generally worn around his neck or carried in one of his large pockets. He speaks quietly, rarely raising his voice and tries his hardest to be understanding and gentle, however the demon of the 13th division still burns deep inside of him and his anger can make him a force to be reckoned with.

Ok, thats it. Edit wasn't working so I doubled posted.

Anyways, my only is issue that I will have a wedding that I must attend for most of Sunday so I might not be available for the full start date. But I just had fun making the character.

Capfalcon: Also missing a dot of Composure(Moros bonus).

Others look fine far as I can tell. Deciding... well, that's gonna be a trick.

I'm working on a character. Still trying to figure out the rules and so on -- it's a new system to me. Just putting this guy here to a) register my definite interest and b) let you know what you'd have as far as character style goes.

    Michael "Mack" McIntyre
Mack was born in Kingsbridge, the Bronx, in 1919. He'd always been the little guy, the quick guy, the loudmouth, and he'd joined up with the Kingsbridge crew as much for protection as anything else. After a while, though, the guys in the crew started coming to Mack for advice and ideas. He wasn't always the guy who came up with a scheme, but he was usually the one who figured out how to make it work. Mack, everyone said, was the luckiest sonofabitch in the Bronx. His plans worked, even when they shouldn't have.

That's why, when the Italians decided to move into Kingsbridge, they came after him so hard. He spent weeks dodging them. Close call after near miss after lucky escape. One November evening, Mack's luck ran out, and he found himself in a blind alley staring up the barrel of a colt. And that's when he Awoke -- and suddenly he was the only living person in that alley. He left Kingsbridge that night, and ran as far and as fast as he could. The start of the War was almost a relief.

It was also the beginning of his education. His superior immediately recognized his talent for numbers and put him to work in the logistical pool. It wasn't long before he caught the attention of John, the man who would become his mentor. It was John who taught him what it was to be Awake. Who taught him the ways of the Acanthus, and of the Silver Ladder. At war's end Mack was a free man, and a Mage. And the world was a much stranger place than it had ever seemed back when he was running with the Kingsbridge crew.

  • piLpiL Registered User regular
He looks a little bit like an Acanthus talkie type (which is what my character is). I guess I should put up my alternate concept after I get back from violin practice, just to make sure the party has variety!

  • GrimmyTOAGrimmyTOA Registered User regular
He doesn't necessarily need to be talky. Could be a cerebral scared mouse who flukes into success due to his innate use of the Acanthus lore.

Or... I could put together another character altogether.

Backstory added. Took forever. Stupid procrastination. :P

I was gonna give some time for any lingering concepts, but ah well.

As much as I'd love to take on eight, I know from past experience that six is my absolute limit, and even that can get kinda crazy(but it's manageable). Heck, running a live game with four is tough.

I'll reluctantly decide on six later this evening, and we'll go from there.

Fair enough - if it makes it any easier on you I'm such a neophyte that I have absolutely no problem just peering over someone's shoulder for now. I can happily be a sub, is what I'm saying, as I'm still wrestling with the mechanics and don't want to drag things down.

That said, if you love Mack McIntyre as a concept, I learn quickly and would be an enthusiastic participant.

  • LanlaornLanlaorn Registered User regular
the nWoD system is really pretty simple Grimmy, the only complication in Mage is that your powers are entirely open ended, within the limits they lay out with the published spells you literally can create on the fly anything you want!

  • GrimmyTOAGrimmyTOA Registered User regular
Heh. Thanks Lan -- I'm confident I could pull a good character together. Just didn't want to saddle cj with a total newbie without cause.

I'm going to put Mack together anyway, of course. :P

I encourage everyone who contributed to keep their characters in mind. They could always jump in later, or better yet, I may decide I can handle the burden of two more(unlikely).

    That said, my reluctant decisions:

piL, Leslie Young / Six of Spades
    skarsol, Lily Chambers
    YamiB, Charun Kirchner
    Lanlaorn, Lucas Kant / Jaunt
    Kirindal, Moira Li / Bellarose
    MoosehatIV, Maximillian Kohn

You all have 20 bonus XP to allocate to your characters before it gets rolling tomorrow, or thereabouts. IC thread will go up then.

Thanks for the submissions, one and all.

Alas, my commie sympathizer mage shall not see the light of day.

I'll be following this thread with interest.

  • LanlaornLanlaorn Registered User regular
One minor nitpick, it's Jaunt, not Haunt ;) Because omg teleportation!

  • piLpiL Registered User regular
Spent the XP on a bonus point of Stamina! Looking forward to it cj!

  • LanlaornLanlaorn Registered User regular
Ok, spent most of the bonus experience on raising Mind from 2 to 3, also had the 10 for dropping Wisdom to 5 unspent but not having any great ideas for that, but did get 1 point in Sanctum and Hallow. So let's say a terrible, cramped apartment on the Lower East Side that's still a catch for the Hallow it contains. While I was at it I finally picked out some Rotes, too, lol.

Anyway all set. Here's a link since the old one is on another page. I really should make a fancy signature to store these things.

  • MoosehatIVMoosehatIV Saw a blimp once Registered User regular
So, I figure we should have at least some reason to be hanging out. Anyone want to share a backstory with Max? Who wants to be drinking buddies with the seven foot tall priest with occasional bouts of anger issues?

  • KirindalKirindal Registered User regular
Spent some of my XP on a few more rotes.

How about tying Moira and Max's stories together? His background story mentioned being courted by the Adamantine Arrows before he joined the Guardians. Perhaps Moira was the one who was sent to provide ground-level observation of Max as well as persuade him to join the Arrows. In spite of his final decision, they still associate with each other. When Moira's in New York they go out for some fun out on the town.

  • MoosehatIVMoosehatIV Saw a blimp once Registered User regular
That works well. I figured despite the fact that he is a guardian he maintains strong ties to the adamantine arrow simply because he gets along with them better.

I was going buy up a bunch of rotes, but it turns out my improvised casting is better than the bonus the rotes provide....

  • YamiB.YamiB. Registered User regular
If you want ties to me as well I have the drinking buddy idea would fit with my guy since he spent a decent chunk of time sitting in bars.

I could also see some ties to Six of Spades for my guy due to some experience on the underbelly of NYC.

IC Thread is go. I prefer Invisible Castle for rolling purposes when needed, done in a spoiler tag, but you can use whatever's preferable.

Incidentally, this was my mood music.

Sheet updated. As far as rotes vs improvised, rotes have the benefit of 1 less mana cost (if not ruling arcana) as well 1 less paradox die in addition to the dice pool, in case that matters to you.

If you guys had reason to be hanging out in Harlem or Manhatten, then we could work out a previous meeting with Lily.

I spent 18 of my Exp to get 1 dot in Resources, a 2nd dot in Matter, and the rote Entropic Guard.

Regarding background histories, I kinda wrote myself into a corner by spending all my time the last few years globetrotting, but if anyone ever hitched a ride from the Mysterium for whatever reason I imagine you'd have been directed to Jaunt.

You can mention passive ability usage here, or spoiler tag it into your post, either is fine. I'll generally provide the updates in-character, unless it's explicitly stat related.
    Lanlaorn wrote:
I just realized I have no idea how passive attainments are supposed to work, with regards to potency. I have Incognito Person on at all times as a result of my first legacy attainment (If I don't do anything obvious people don't notice me, -suxx to active perception/memory tests to look for/remember me) so when do I roll to determine the penalty, and what do I roll, gnosis + arcana I presume?

If someone's effectively trying to pierce your cover, we'll go from there based on the situation.

For those with contacts and such, decide if you have a certain person and/or background for them in mind, or want them to be entirely up to me.

I'm more than content with the latter.

I can't look anything up right now, getting ready for work and all of that, but I'd be able to tell Jaunt's a mage because my mage sight would pick up on the spells he has cast, right? Or am I misremembering?

  • skarsolskarsol Registered User regular
Yes, you can see active powers. Mages can sense active powers (but not identify) without Mage Sight even.

    why are you smelling it?
  • YamiB.YamiB. Registered User regular
I wasn't aware of that. So should we be able to passively identify the other Mages in the room unless they are actively avoiding being detected?

  • skarsolskarsol Registered User regular
My understanding is they have to be using an active power.

    why are you smelling it?
  • LanlaornLanlaorn Registered User regular
If you have prime sight you pick out their aura right away.

For covert spells you need mage sight and an int+occult roll, for vulgar spells I think you still need mage sight but no roll, and your unseen senses should ping either way.

In character I'm just outright assuming every single person in the room is more than they seem, lol.

  • YamiB.YamiB. Registered User regular
    edited April 2012
So it seems the sixth sense of any mage in the bar should be pinging somewhat from the spells that have been activated.

Also before we get into this would anybody be interested in sharing some background with my character? I'm up for being an acquaintance of Max or Spades from hanging in bars.

Anyone with Prime would pretty much have their spidey senses tingling the moment a Mage is nearby. Also, updates will be a touch more erratic than I'd like due to moving. (Funny, happened last time I started a Mage game here too... history repeats.)

Went ahead and added some rotes with my new XP. Also a sanctum with a pretty nice hallow. Does anyone want to go ahead and pool our sanctum points? We could get a pretty sweet pad.
