[PS2] Ratchet and Clank

When I picked up my PS2 on Saturday I got with a handful of games. Xenosaga, GH2, and this. I thought I'd play GH2 the most, followed by Xenosaga and then maybe I'd try this out.

It's ended up being almost the opposite and this game has quickly become one of my favorites.

It's got a decent sense of humor in the way that it doesn't take itself too seriously. The gameplay is varied with each area having it's own unique mechanics and atmosphere. Sound effects, music, all well done.

When I didn't own a PS2 I wrote it off as just another generic 3D platformer, and maybe some people will claim it is, but that doesn't obscure the fact that carrying around a flame thrower almost two times the size of the character toting it and using it to send your enemies to a fiery death is fun as hell. Not to say all the other weapons aren't fun either. They're all unique, all with their own purpose.

I'm not that far into it yet (only about 4 or 5 hours) so I can't really sing it's praises any more than I already have. All I can say is that I'm heartily looking forward to the next two games and the fourth on that dark day I hunker down and buy a PS3. I've heard equally good things about the Jax and Daxter series, so perhaps I'll have to give that a go round as well.

For anyone with a PS2 that just vaguely enjoys platformers but hasn't played this, I'd heartily recommend it.

Anyways...I must get back to saving the galaxy.

I like the series a lot, surprisingly. Good humor and just a really fun game. I like the second game the best, but the third one has done a lot of weapon improvements, and added a bit more replay value. Third has online matches, but I'm not too big on that portion.

I've only played 1, 2, and some of Deadlocked but the museum in 2 was so many kinds of awesome. Even if you couldn't climb all those ramps in that testing area, I'll be damned if I didn't try. Also, glitching your way into the museum is so much more fun than taking the real way.

I've been hearing that it's all improvements after the first one, and since I already like the first one so much I guess this is only a good thing. I also heard that it sees old save data from previous games and gives you a bonus or something, which is always fun.

And to maximumzero, I know the Sony hate is all the rage right now but the PS2 is a damned good gaming value. I feel like my eyes have been opened to a whole new world of gaming.

The 1st and 3rd games in the series were awesome, and if the 2nd game's story wasn't so meh then I would consider it to be the best since it had the best gameplay. At least one of these games is in my favorite 15 games of all time.

I have the first two and they're definitely excellent games. I completed the first one, but I don't think I got too far in the second one. School got a bit involved so I had to stop, and it's just gotten lost in the shuffle. My fiancee got the third game and from what I saw it's pretty good.

I played the demo for that Ratchet: Deadlocked game and didn't care for it too much.

I was considering picking this up when I saw it at Walmart for $15. Now I will consider it more. I might just make a trip to Gamestop and buy used copies of the series.

Also, where would the Jak & Daxter series rate next to Ratchet & Clank? I've always heard they were in the same vein and I wouldn't mind having a few more awesome games in my collection.

Having done the math, if I buy used, I could probably get the first two games in both series' for about $40. Deal? Perhaps. (Though I still need a copy of SotC...)

Out of the modern platformers on PS2, the Ratchet series is my favorite. Between those games and Resistance, Insomniac is quickly becoming one of my favorite developers.

Those screens of Ratchet and Clank Future are from gameplay and are scans. To top it off, the game is still far from release. I'd say they look drop-dead gorgeous.

The first Jak & Daxter is just fantastic. The second one is bigger, not as fun, but still a pretty good platformer. Never played the third.

Get all three Ratchet & Clank games and the first Jak & Daxter.

Man, so many people ignoring Deadlocked, and saying the PS2 only had three Ratchet games. :(

Deadlocked wasn't on par with the rest of the series as far as length goes, but it was a lot of fun, and the introduction of co-op to the series was certainly welcome. I've lost count of how many times my friend and I replayed through that game.

Jak and Daxter is kind of strange.

The first is a traditional 3-D platformer. A little on the easy side, but enjoyable, especially the vehicle segments. The second tried really hard to be GTA, introduced weapons and hovercars. Jak started talking, and the difficulty is all over the place. 3 shifted focus away from GTA but couldn't ignore what happened in the second game. The result is more races, more weapons (the same 4 types though), but most things don't feel as crowded. The difficulty feels better, too.

As much as I enjoyed the story and gunplay of the Jak series, I think R&C is the better of the 2 franchises. It didn't change identities midstream, and each game is a marked improvement over the previous installment (except Deadlocked which I haven't played and thus can not comment on).

R&C also doesn't take itself too seriously, which Jak II seems to do. It's a little off putting to be playing a platformer that thinks it is serious business when the previous installment had me riding an ostrich while looking for glorified batteries.

P.S. If you pick up 3 and enjoy the racing, Jak X: Combat Racing is all sorts of fun and is an excellent arcade racer. It's great in versus mode, too.

Not necessarily. As R&C moves from 1 to 2 to 3 it becomes less platformer and more third person shooter with platformer elements. Seriously, I think I spent 3/4 of my time in the 3rd game in strafe mode. It would have been great to toggle control to tradition dual analog controls for movement and weapon selection in the pause menu or something. (unless I missed this option, in which case I'm an idiot)

If you enjoy platforming (with weirdo guns) you might still like the first installment, but I'd steer clear of 2 and 3.

I'll have to agree. Jak was bland in the first game, but in the second they made him dark for the sake of dark. The third one had a better feel... its difficulty is still all over the place, but the driving is better and the revelation on the precursors is absolutely wonderful.

Now Ratchet and Clank... oh my dear god, yes. The tone is funny and charming, the music is good stuff, and the weapons are wacky yet useful.

I still haven't used any gun that feels as good as the bouncer. Shoot out a big ball that, on impact, breaks into 25 bouncing, clanking mines that surround the enemy and sound like popcorn as they gradually explode. LOVE it.

Edit: LewieP, playing the first one might give you an appreciation for the other two. I came for the platforming, expecting to not be sucked in by the guns... boy, was I wrong. After each game I was ready for more shooting (and I'm not even an FPS fan!).

Going Commando (R&C2) was a complete blast. It hit the perfect sweet spot of platforming, third-person action, open-ended-yet-somewhat-directed gameplay. I also loved all of the mini-game-styled segments, like the Giant Clank slugfests or the hang-gliding. I actually made it through that ultimate challenge on the arena, too -- it sucked because I accidentally upgraded the Lava Gun midway through, and I vastly preferred the older version of the gun (solid stream of lava) to the newer one (big chunks of lava stone).

I put about six hours into Up Your Arsenal (R&C3) but something about it just felt off, so I got bored and sold it off.

Yeah, I really like the R&C series, and they do just get better and better IMO. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the first game pretty basic in terms of weapon upgrades? The thing I liked the most in the second game was how using a weapon more would improve it (except maybe in the case of the Lava Jizz Gun).

Yep. It wasn't till the second game that your guns actually "leveled up" and transformed into completely new versions. If I recall, the "gold" versions in the first game were almost exactly the same as the old ones, just with more damage.

I was shocked that the graphics are still relatively awesome compared to today's games - it's aged well. I've never played the sequels or spin-offs but hopefully one day I will.

Jak 1 is really just a glorified collectathon. If you liked Bajo Kazooie... well that's pretty much exactly what it is. "Get me 20 of these. Oh no! Now we need 50 of them! Oh noes again! Now we need 130." Etc. Etc. If you liked BK though, its enjoyable.

In Lock-Strafe mode, Ratchet would strafe whenever a weapon or gadget was equipped, and then platform normally when you had the wrench out. Which basically meant to go back to the original controlls for a while you just had to hit square.

Ratchet and Clank is what made me <3 Insomniac so much, though I did play and enjoy their PSX games. The first one was really excellent platformer/shooter, and the second was better in every way (and is one of my favorite PS2 games). Up Your Arsenal was excellent as well, though I think I like Going Commando best.

I was a bit disappointed by Deadlocked, but it was still a pretty good game. I really need to pick up Size Matters, my PSP hasn't gotten enough love lately.

I have to chime in and say that yes, Ratchet and Clank is excellent, but you shouldn't write off Jak. The first one is an average, if charming and well-made, platformer. The second two are much more unique and fun. Yes, the difficulty is all over the place, but it feels incredibly rewarding when you complete a difficult mission. There's also a lot of variety in the gameplay. If you just get one, I'd recommend 3, but they're all good.

If I'm not mistaken, that's a collection of all the cutscenes from the first three games with commentary by Daxter. Nice freebie if you like the series.

Regarding the series: it's fun and all, but I would recommend not getting too invested in it; Jak 3 was seen as a bit of a letdown storywise, at least to the hardcore fans of the series. It was sort of a 180 from the previous two games and really doesn't feel very coherent. Oh well, they're all fun. Definitely pick up the first one and maybe Gamefly the second one to see if you like it.

As for Ratchet and Clank, it never clicked with me, but Size Matters has me salivating.
