God, I love this game so much. And Hashtag is a blessing, I just loaded him up with 250 empty bottles and we're gonna fill those up at the healing spring. ANd then maybe have some tea and crumpet and sing some nursery rhymes.

Hah cool. The latest iteration of Hashtag (that I haven't updated at the inn) has maxed his 2Hedness. I'm unsure if I should swap him back to Sword and Board (also maxed), what do you guys think?

The only thing making me wary is that the best shield I can find at the moment is the plain Iron Shield. Don't know where to find a better piece of kit for him.

Also I wasn't sure if people actually used him as a literal mule like this, what with the 250 bottles, I know I do, but I took off his Sinew (extra carry weight) in favor of more +STR.

Personally I think any point scale is nonsense for reviews (the fractional point ones in particular slay me - so you liked it enough for an 8.5 but not quite enough for a 9). It's silly. You either liked the game enough to endorse it or you didn't. Thumbs up, thumbs down. Easy.

That is why I liked the OXM gameplay video. You could tell the dude playing the game enjoyed playing the game. As a critic he still had to call out the games flaws, but he had fun. That is what is important to me. That is why I put more faith in my fellow G&Ters words than any reviewer's.

And honestly, most of my all time favoritest games ever are also among the buggiest. Kind of strange really.

Eh, the reviews are fair to middlin' on the whole. There are some fairly scathing reviews and very few of glowing praise. The good reviews tend to give it a solid 'B', and as we all know, a 70-anything in this industry is bargain-bin fodder, especially if it's a new IP. I truly believe that more people would have given this a look if Capcom hadn't had its recent PR blemish with the DLC/monetization fiasco, and if they'd done any marketing for it whatsoever. Heck, Kingdoms of Amalur certainly seemed to get far more advertising space than this did (granted EA's got deeper pockets than Capcom, but still, we're not talking about an indie startup company here).
Anything above 60 for me is a definite try. What "the industry" thinks is completely pointless.
And upper 70s in nowhere near "fair to middlin'".
To you and I, a mid-seventies score might not be a middling one, but to the masses it certainly seems to be the case. I don't want to derail the thread on a 'review scores are bad' tangent but it's definitely the case that anything below 80 is considered sub-par in this generation of AAA-sell-a-million-or-you're-out titles. And really, going through most of those Metacritic reviews (the "professional" sites only, not the user reviews), the only recognizeable name that gave this game anything above an 80 was Gametrailers. All of the more reputable sites, those that most (here at least) seem to put stock in like Eurogamer, Edge, Giantbomb, Joystiq and such, ranged from tepid to outright revulsion (Joystiq's specifically).

Personally, I sometimes feel as if I'm not playing the same game as a lot of the reviewers, because short of some very minor complaints, this game is nigh-flawless in my eyes. But then, I can understand where the detractors are coming from because I felt the -exact- same way about the Witcher 2. People seemed to treat that game as if it were the best thing ever and I could not have disagreed more, I absolutely loathed it. Different strokes and all that, but the problem here is, and I think one of the review sites said it best, this is one of Capcom's most ambitious games in the past decade or more and it will likely get passed up because some of the pro review sites collectively dumped on it. I really hope it gets a sequel, honestly, because it absolutely deserves one. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if it doesn't.

The terrible reviews are why I poked around here asking questions.

(Almost) Everyone here loves it, but the reviews I saw were brutal.

Where the hell are people seeing all these bad reviews? I know of ONE, Joystiq's, which is laughably poor not to mention incorrect.

Joystiq was the first one I read (oops), so it definitely colored my view of the other ones I read.

I just listened to the Joystiq podcast. Only one of them liked it (he would replay it), 2 didn't. Those 2 took a while to figure out you need to switch pawns. Listen to it.

But their main complaint was the escort quests (suddenly encountering bunch of high level monsters) and the lack of fast-travel means.

I can imagine that people previewing the game before release, who don't have access to friendly pawns (or, really, any pawns outside of other pre/reviewers), would have a vastly different opinion of the online component. For me, it's more like "Which cheat mode do I want to enable today? Incredible damage, or constant healing?"

Other than the first guy, Rook, are there offline pawns?
Patrick Klepek at Giant Bomb mentioned in the quick look for the game that he waited until release specifically so that he could see the online running as intended. He just thought the game was kind of average, though he's mostly not the type of person to enjoy it, anyway. I think he only ended up reviewing it because the only guy over there that potentially would enjoy it doesn't have time to review games.

Whenever I take pawns out I usually follow a simple rule of mine. I take them when they are two levels higher then me and keep them until they are two levels lower.

Once in a while I will hold on to a pawn I find extremely awesome for a bit longer though.

If a PAwn (love that by the way, kudos Allforce) falls within that category, or close enough, then I will grab them.

    edit-

Hm, I didn't really answer your question so let me rectify that. I do not personally take high level Pawns because they would more then likely wreck shit. I guess it all comes down to personal taste. If you wanted to easily wreck shit then taking PAwns would be the Bro way to do it.

I noticed very quickly that as much as you might think having high level pawns helps you out they can't stop you from being killed if things go pear shaped. Heals are too slow and damage is too low against bosses even for high levels.

    So I stopped caring.

The industry considers anything sub-80 a bad review.

And I saw someone saying "who cares what the industry thinks" or something, and uh, the industry cares and Capcom cares and they'll be deciding how much support this new IP gets going forward.

Middling reviews like this suggest that even if Dragon's Dogma 2 is made, and it might be purely on strength of sales in Japan, there exists the chance they may decide it's not worth localization here. And yes, that could definitely occur because this is Capcom we're talking about.

Everything goes back to your bank if they don't use it during their time with you. Anything permanent will see a big warning that it is i.e the single item on return or equipping them with gear.

Constipation disgusts and angers the sufferer. Being afraid of people thinking you are a sociopath = fear. 5 is still sadness. So really only 3 and 4 are wrong. And even then nobody really feels joy that's just a myth so you might as well label drivers license smiles as joy and be done with it. So there's just the o-face. And I'll tell you. If someone randomly walks up and does an o-face at you, right there, in your face, you are gonna feel surprise first.

@Monger, I hope you're okay with me giving Maya a staff that ups her Magick by over 500 points compared to her old one (746 to 1249).

I'm gonna need a lot more wine to give out.
    This staff is badass.

Do you guys who are pretty far along recommend using any PAwns if you're just starting out or will it just break the game difficulty-wise? I see a ton of you guys have pawns I want to use but they're all 30+ levels higher than I am so I've been hiring random pawns that are my level or lower

Ive been using pawns that are pretty far ahead of me level wise. I dont find it game breaking at all. One pawn cant fight a giant monster or group of bandits by itself, regardless of level.

You should hire Skull, hes a good fighter! :D

I only roll with chicks, man.

I'm a giant old man made of muscle with a bald head and grey beard who keeps a flock of bad-ass and hot female pawns around.

Then~ Rider is up your alley, Allforce. I have her flipped to ranger for some augments (she's maxed on strider) and she is a bow launching wrecking machine. Im a ranger as well and sometimes she'd time her dire shot with mine... literally one-two punch that knocks cyclops the fuck down.

The leg-pin ability is fun, but it has no where near the utility of ensnare. I wish that was transferable to ranger.

Well, tried the escort quest, Mercedes to Shadowfort.

Six feet outside of the capital, Griffin swings down, picks up Mercedes, drops her off a cliff. Quest failed.

    Annnnnnnnnd that's a ragequit.

Sounds like just about every escort quest ever. It's such a bitch you can't save during them. @Foefaller, sent Leanna some gear. Holla if they got through.

Escorting Reynard to the Greatwall at level fucking 14 was a laugh. I actually did it, too. The last stretch was me, with one pawn left alive (they managed to not get knocked off the cliff on the way) at night, getting chased by phantasms and a chimera with me fucking carrying the asshole for the last part, both of us one hit from dying.

I think that might be the quest I was stuck. I went mage so perhaps my DPS was low.

At the last stage of the trip, it became less about how fast we could kill things and more about how I could just run my ass off.

also, @Achire - you can definitely save during escorts. if you can't, it's likely there's monsters around.

I think that quest is meant for NG+... the fact that you did it on your first play is impressive.
