Someone got ahold of the script last month and tweeted some thoughts on it.
I’ll share this one detail. In the film, when Murphy is turned into Robocop 1.0, it’s described “a high-tech version of the ’80s suit.” Then they show a focus group scene where criminals laugh at the design. “He looks like a toy from the ’80s!” So they redesign him to look “meaner” as Robocop 2.0, who passes focus group approval. So they not only make sure to include the original design, they also point out it’s dated and stupid.
    Uhhhh

  • ButtlordButtlord Fornicus Lord of Bondage and PainRegistered User regular
that is an ok thing to put in though
it's poking fun at focus groups and the idea that to develop the ideal cop-like figure they'd create a group made entirely of the people robocop is supposed to affect the most

and yes by today's standards that's a really dated and stupid design

like i don't think people understand what the whole Deal is if they read that spoiler and think it's stupid

that shit is the entire Deal with robocop

So yeah there is gonna be a decent amount of red on the suit via post production, probably

So Dredd should be a movie that you should see in 3D, right?

Oh yeah, reading the actual quote, he doesn't like it either so I take back what I said.

If that's really how things go down, though, it's not looking great.

the Total Recall remake left a very poor impression on me

I'm not particularly hopeful about any more remakes of iconic 80's action movies

    wY6K6Jb.gif
  • UnbreakableVowUnbreakableVow Registered User regular
I liked Total Recall quite a bit

Moreso than the '80s one which I really didn't like much at all

  • BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular
    Total Recall was '90, nerd

i walked out of total recall halfway through

the most generic, insipid, boring, poorly lit movie i've seen, first movie i've walked out of

read the wiki synopsis for the rest of the movie, don't regret my decision

  • Indie WinterIndie Winter die Krähe Rudi Hurzlmeier (German, b. 1952)Registered User regular
yeah and they could have done so much more with it, even without Mars

a more action oriented Inception, sort of thing

but instead it was just a dull, C- movie

    I want a handphone

  • AntimatterAntimatter Devo Was Right Gates of SteelRegistered User regular
total recall had sexy streetwalker gynoids and glowing tattoos and three boobs on one lady and i still was not entertained

    that almost takes talent

    ...phonesex/handjob?

Also how did Total Recall look generic

If so, please direct me to the movies you're seeing because I thought it looked pretty unique outside of the context of video games

it copied the zeitgeist's image of modern science fiction

i could point to anything from will smith's i, robot to star trek '09

there was not a single original thing it did and IT HAD SUCH SHITTY LIGHTING AND WRITING AND ACTION HOLY SHIT I HATED THAT MOVIE

Please tell me you're talking about the new one. I haven't seen it so I don't know if it's good or not, but I love the original so much.

She is, the new one bored me to tears through just the trailer alone and nothing I've seen or heard about it has changed that opinion.

I get that a more modern design aesthetic makes sense, and that classic clunk doesn't come into play when people think "FUTURE!" anymore. I mean, it's a pity, but it's the way it is.

But, and I know it might look better with CG, in motion, all that, this design really doesn't work for the modern angle either. I mean, let's ignore things like Iron Man's film design still having a nice heft. We're talking the sleek Ipod stuff, right?

Suit doesn't sell for that either. Too much breaking up the lines, too much meat from obviously having a human in it to get that EVE-from-WALL-E, Portal Turret, spindly limbed mech feeling.

I mean, if it looked like Apple's ICop, then I'd still be put out, but I'd see what they were going for. Heck, it'd offer a lot of different ground for satire, which is always nice. (And having all the organs shot out would be an excuse for aesthetics not matching human proportions).

This? I know people will say "That's what they're going for!", but it feels like a shoddily put together "badass" design. It doesn't look like it's supposed to be a production model. Old Robocop did. Had a big, chunky feel to him which said "Our product is sturdy! It will keep the streets safe!"

New Robocop looks like he's supposed to be individually badass (fails at it in my opinion, but that's the impression I get), which doesn't work so well if they're trying to sell this to a city for mass production. Old Robocop may have been a beater design, but he was a beater of a police car . New design feels like a personalized road rocket.

I have seen it, you should also probably go and see it on account of it being pretty great.
I mean it doesn't exactly push the boundaries of cinema or anything but it is Judge Dredd which is really all the excuse you need.
Sticks pretty close to the comics, nice visuals, action scenes are well done and various peoples heads explode, occasionally in slow motion.

"guys why is a remake of a satire poking fun at concepts in the original that seem dated in comparison to what we have now" is p dumb sorry

    Robocop married a stealth fighter

To be fair it did not some sort of design change if the movie wanted to be anything more then an affectionate recreation of the original

  • SolarSolar Registered User regular
I don't see how anyone could possibly have expected a new Robocop to look anything like the old Robocop

  • GatsbyGatsby Registered User regular

Nobody expected this, we hoped for a new design that would be an evolution on a pulpy robotic design and instead got a dude in body armour.

Like I said in the fiction thread the new outfit doesn't feel at all like a robotic cop, and if that tweet is accurate
When rebooting a beloved movie that's still relevant today it's in poor form making fun of an iconic design in such a ham-handed way.

Seriously that doesn't help matters at all.

  • SolarSolar Registered User regular
    Well I mean

the original Robocop wasn't designed as a pulpy robot man

it was made as a super futuristic looking cyborg

it just looks like a pulpy robot man now because it was made in the eighties

if Robocop was made now for the first time, then it'd look like the new Robocop does

a.k.a sleek and matt and stealth bomber-y in a twenty-minutes-in-the-future-way

  • AntimatterAntimatter Devo Was Right Gates of SteelRegistered User regular
It looks futuristic but he doesn't look like a cyborg

    He has normal proportions

He should either be a bit bigger than a normal man or spindlier

but that is literally the point of the movie

the first movie, and presumably the new one, are all about satire

and yes by 2012 standards that is a really dumb, clunky design. it's iconic because of the movie, but in a world where robocop the movie doesn't exist, if you showed that to someone in 2030whatever they'd laugh at you, because it looks like teh 1980s vision of the future

there's a difference between actually making fun of it and thinking its dumb and satirizing it

i would be more disappointed if that scene wasn't in the movie

there's almost certainly going to be some CG work around the edges

one of the promo shots on the omnicorp website, you can see his shoulder, and it's way too sleek for a normal arm to fit in the socket

so i'd expect shit like that
